Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Simultaneous droplet sizes and velocities were obtained for a transient diesel fuel spray in a quiescent chamber at atmospheric temperature and pressure. Instantaneous injection pressure, needle lift, and rate of injection were also measured, allowing calculation of the instantaneous nozzle discharge coefficient. Short-exposure still photographs were obtained at various chamber pressure and densities to further investigate this spray. Correlations between droplet size and velocity were determined at each crank angle to observe the detailed nature of the transient events occurring in this transient diesel fuel spray. As expected, peak mean and rms velocities are observed in the center of the spray. Measured average velocities are consistent with a calculated value, using the discharge coefficient for the nozzle and the known rate of fuel injection. The spray was nearly symmetric, with higher velocities occurring near the injector tip, and the radial dependence of velocity consistent with that observed from the spray photographs. Factors observed to effect the droplet size and velocity distributions and history include pump speed, fuel quantity delivered, and needle lift. Reprints. (aw).

Book Synopsis Breakup of Liquid Sheets and Jets by : S. P. Lin
Download or read book Breakup of Liquid Sheets and Jets written by S. P. Lin and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2003-08-21 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, first published in 2003, is an exposition of what we knew about the physics underlying the onset of instability in liquid sheets and jets. Wave motion and breakup phenomena subsequent to the onset of instability are carefully explained. Physical concepts are established through rigorous mathematics, accurate numerical analyses and comparison of theory with experiment. Exercises are provided for students, and these help familiarize the reader with the required mathematical tools. This book further provides a rational basis for designing equipment and processes involving the phenomena of sheet and jet breakup. Researchers interested in transition to turbulence, hydrodynamic stability or combustion will find this book a highly useful resource, whether their background lies in engineering, physics, chemistry, biology, medicine or applied mathematics.
Book Synopsis Structure of Unsteady Sprays Injected from Pintle-Type Nozzles by : C. Arcoumanis
Download or read book Structure of Unsteady Sprays Injected from Pintle-Type Nozzles written by C. Arcoumanis and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 7 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The temporal and spatial characteristics of the transient diesel spray injected from a pintle-type nozzle into the atmosphere were investigated by phase Doppler anemometry and its structure visualised by high speed photography. The droplet velocities and sizes were quantified near the nozzle exit and the degree of fuel atomisation deduced from the fractal dimension estimated from the droplets size distribution. High frequency periodic structures were identified on the surface of the transient spray and attributed to aerodynamic interactions between the injected fuel and surrounding air. (Author).
Book Synopsis Investigation of Diesel Sprays Using Diffraction-Based Droplet Sizing by : M. A. Coil
Download or read book Investigation of Diesel Sprays Using Diffraction-Based Droplet Sizing written by M. A. Coil and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of combustion in direct injection Diesel engines demands detailed understanding of the behavior of the injection. Understanding the injection involves characterizing the distribution of fuel particle sizes throughout the spray. This work studied the size distributions of sprays from commercial Diesel injectors under a series of conditions. A diffraction-based diagnostic obtained maps of local fuel droplet size information over the full spray field. Most quantitative techniques currently used in spray research provide quantitative time-ranging data at a single point in the spray field. Spatially resolved information proves more useful in studying transient sprays. The spatially resolved maps of particle size obtained in this experiment showed the reliability of the diagnostic, exhibited the transience of the fine structure of these sprays, and demonstrated the evolution of the sprays with time.

Download or read book Droplets and Sprays written by Sergei Sazhin and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-05-19 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Providing a clear and systematic description of droplets and spray dynamic models, this book maximises reader insight into the underlying physics of the processes involved, outlines the development of new physical and mathematical models and broadens understanding of interactions between the complex physical processes which take place in sprays. Complementing approaches based on the direct application of computational fluid dynamics (CFD), Droplets and Sprays treats both theoretical and practical aspects of internal combustion engine process such as the direct injection of liquid fuel, subcritical heating and evaporation. Including case studies that illustrate the approaches relevance to automotive applications, it is also anticipated that the described models can find use in other areas such as in medicine and environmental science.
Book Synopsis Comparisons of Measured Drop Sizes and Velocities in a Transient Fuel Spray with Stability Criteria and Computed PDF's by : Ja-Ye Koo
Download or read book Comparisons of Measured Drop Sizes and Velocities in a Transient Fuel Spray with Stability Criteria and Computed PDF's written by Ja-Ye Koo and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 17 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two sets of comparisons were made in an attempt to provide a mechanism for understanding the behavior of transient sprays. First, detailed measurements of drop size and velocity in a transient spray were compared to established stability criteria for different droplet breakup mechanisms, specifically criteria for bag breakup and boundary layer stripping. Then, probability-density-functions were determined from the experimental data and compared, where appropriate, to different computed distributions (such as the Chi-square or log-hyperbolic distributions). Comparison with the stability criteria indicates that the a majority of droplets in the spray are susceptible to both breakup mechanisms near the injector tip. However, downstream, the spray appears to stabilize and any redistribution of droplet size must apparently be a result of collisions.
