Book excerpt: "Differential circuits are becoming increasingly important in radio frequency (RF) and microwave applications. This has led to the development of mixed-mode scattering parameters to address differential and common-mode operations. Mixed-mode scattering parameters also address the conversion between the two modes of operation. In the measurement or in the modeling of any differential circuits, it is found that a pure-mode network-analyzer provides accurate measurements of differential circuits. Additionally, given the standard S-parameters (either by measurements or by modeling), we can apply a conversion from standard S-parameters to mixed-mode S-parameters. Furthermore, to guarantee the accuracy of the S-parameters derived from the measurement by the network analyzer, a proper calibration method and an appropriate type of system error model must be carefully considered. In this thesis, several different normal calibration standards, including TRL, TRL*, TRM and TRM*, and their related error models are analyzed. Single-ended and mixed-mode S-parameters can be further processed to generate time domain eye patterns, so as to characterize signal loss and attenuation through RF devices and interconnects. The method of eye pattern generation is discussed and some samples of eye patterns for different high data-rate transmissions are presented. Another part of the thesis details the modeling of frequency-dependent losses on transmission lines. A methodology for extracting the dielectric constant and loss tangent of the PCB substrate is demonstrated using stripline test structures. Some works on transmission line characterization and cross-section analysis are also discussed"--Abstract, leaf iii.

Book excerpt: An accurate measurement technique is required to fully characterize the losses observed at high frequencies in transmission lines. Evaluation of losses seen at high frequencies is necessary to meet the high-speed data transfer rates that future applications will demand. Conductor properties and losses are two critical issues in signal path characterization. The nature of conductor losses is not well understood at high speeds. Classical models used for predicting the effects of surface roughness on signal propagation are known to breakdown around 5 GHz. Novel methods are sought to quantify the effects beyond 5 GHz. Direct simulation and measurements of surface roughness effects are difficult, because dielectric loss has similar impact on measured data. In this study, the phenomenon of copper surface roughness will be addressed. A novel methodology to extract conductor based on a stripline configuration of two different widths will be proposed. This new methodology does not suffer from inaccurate assumptions on the dielectric loss tangent as the contribution of the dielectric loss is completely eliminated. Simulation will be performed using ANSYS HFSS and AGILENT ADS. The final outcome of this thesis will be to verify electromagnetic simulations with surface roughness against measurements and to demonstrate the importance of surface roughness.

Book excerpt: This work presents a new approach for the time domain simulation of transients on a dispersive and lossy transmission line terminated with active devices. The method combines the scattering matrix of an arbitrary line and the nonlinear causal impedance functions at the load to derive a closed form algorithm for the signal at the near and far ends. The problems of line losses, dispersion and nonlinearities are first investigated. A time-domain formulation is then proposed using the scattering matrix representation. The algorithm assumes that dispersion and loss models for the transmission lines are available and that the frequency dependence is known. Large signal equivalent circuits for the terminations are assumed to be given. Experimental and computer simulated results are compared for the lossless dispersionless case, and the effects of losses and dispersion are predicted.

Book excerpt: Frequency-dependent transmission line models can be developed in phase domain or in mode domain. Associated to these transmission line models, time domain or frequency domain can be used for electromagnetic transient analysis solutions. Because of these options, there are several models for transmission line representation in electromagnetic transient studies. One reason for this is the longitudinal parameter frequency dependence. This book presents a variety of models which serve to improve the frequency dependence representation. In some cases, phase-mode transformation is applied, considering the problem in mode domain, and searching for improving the frequency-dependent parameter representation. On the other hand, changes in the system structure as well as voltage and current surge waves are better modelled on the time domain.

This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Overhead transmission lines are a vital component in electrical power networks. Overvoltage transients that originate in transmission lines due to disturbances such as lightning or switching can reach other components in a power system and create electrical insulation breakdown and equipment failure if countermeasures are not sufficiently taken. Therefore, accurate electromagnetic transient (EMT) modelling of the transmission line network is an essential requirement in designing and analyzing a power system. The increasing demand for electrical power and limited availability of land has caused overhead power transmission lines to be constructed in close proximity to each other. These close encounters such as nonparallel lines in close proximity, ultra-high voltage (UHV) lines crossing above lower voltage lines, communication lines or buried pipelines, and discontinuities such as lines undergoing sharp bends are generally nonuniform in nature. Several researchers have shown that the transient behaviour of transmission lines with such nonuniformities is far from what is predicted using conventional transmission line models that assume a uniform cross-sectional structure. Although three dimensional full-wave techniques can be used to accurately analyze these non-uniform structures, they are often associated with high computational costs and typically require iterative methods to obtain solutions. This makes them hardly suitable for circuit-type time-domain simulations. This research is focused on developing computationally efficient and EMT-simulator compatible time-domain models to analyze the transient behavior of nonuniform transmission problems involving nonparallel conductors. Transient models for both overhead and buried nonuniform structures have been derived and successfully implemented on an EMT simulator (PSCAD/EMTDC). Higher computational efficiency has been achieved by developing closed-form mathematical models which can be solved using lesser number of computations than full-wave models as well as by using parallel computing techniques. Results have been compared with those obtained using full-wave solvers and field measurement obtained by other researchers available in the literature.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new algorithm for modeling and simulation of lossy interconnect structures modeled by transmission lines with Frequency Independent Line Parameters (FILP) or Frequency Dependent Line Parameters (FDLP) is developed in this research. Since frequency-dependent RLGC parameters must be employed to correctly model skin effects and dielectric losses for high-performance interconnects, we first study the behaviors of various lossy interconnects that are characterized by FILP and FDLP. Current general macromodeling methods and Model Order Reduction (MOR) algorithms are discussed. Next, some canonical integrals that are associated with transient responses of lossy transmission lines with FILP are presented. By using contour integration techniques, these integrals can be represented as closed-form expressions involving special functions, i.e., Incomplete Lipshitz-Hankel Integrals (ILHIs) and Complementary Incomplete Lipshitz-Hankel Integrals (CILHIs). Various input signals, such as ramp signals and the exponentially decaying sine signals, are used to test the expressions involving ILHIs and CILHIs. Excellent agreements are observed between the closed-form expressions involving ILHIs and CILHIs and simulation results from commercial simulation tools. We then developed a frequency-domain Dispersive Hybrid Phase-Pole Macromodel (DHPPM) for lossy transmission lines with FDLP, which consists of a constant RLGC propagation function multiplied by a residue series. The basic idea is to first extract the dominant physical phenomenology by using a propagation function in the frequency domain that is modeled by FILP. A rational function approximation is then used to account for the remaining effects of FDLP lines. By using a partial fraction expansion and analytically evaluating the required inverse Fourier transform integrals, the time-domain DHPPM can be decomposed as a sum of canonical transient responses for lines with FILP for various excitations (e.g., trapezoidal and unit-step). These canonical transient responses are then expressed analytically as closed-form expressions involving ILHIs, CILHIs, and Bessel functions. The DHPPM simulator can simulate transient results for various input waveforms on both single and coupled interconnect structures. Comparisons between the DHPPM results and the results produced by commercial simulation tools like HSPICE and a numerical Inverse Fast Fourier Transform (IFFT) show that the DHPPM results are very accurate.
