In turn, its urban form is grappling with a number of preserved industrial heritage sites in major urban centers such as Beijing and Shanghai. The People's Republic of China has implemented policy through a culture-led approach in preservation and reuse, resulting in artist communities, museums, and creative offices. However, these sites have either become artifacts frozen in time or heavily commercialized tourist attractions that threaten to displace the creativity within. This thesis investigates alternative approaches to preservation and reuse of these sites, especially how to integrate 21st century productive uses as a means of urban regeneration. The spirit of industriousness can be preserved within these sites by allowing new productive activities to occur. There is potential to bring high-tech industries into these sites which can benefit from the existing creative environment while increasing longterm economic viability and promote innovation. Collaboration is needed between the government and private developers to control the development direction of the site while allowing flexibility for innovative solutions. Opportunities exist in industrial heritage sites in major Chinese cities today that can bring them back into the life of the city.

Book excerpt: With the development of the world's industrial technology to a new era -- the post-industrial era, many manufacturing plants were abandoned and gave way to green space or service industry, among other possibilities. Site reconstruction has become an increasingly popular thing in urban planning and design around the world. In Shanghai, many famous industrial heritage sites have been transformed into public facilities, but there are still many normal industry sites visible in the community. Many of them still have retained a lot of values. There is no accurate set of variables to define what determines the effect of industrial land renovation. This study selects a post- industrial site in Shanghai, conceives three different designs through different concepts, collects and calculates data to analyze different variables in the three different types of designs, and explores new methods to protect these post-industrial sites. The Friedman analysis of comparative methods has been applied to reach a value of 9.51. On the other hand, the value of X, with 2 degrees of freedom, is 5.991. It is smaller than our data of 9.51, which then means the value is effective. Finally, a multiple comparison procedure proves that industrial elements is a more effective way of transformation. This research will help landscape architects, urban planners, and others interested in this topic understand the appropriate steps required for industrial site reconstruction.

A worldwide perspective is created so as to conduct cross-cultural research on the theories and practices of large-scale urban parks in North America, Germany and China. Through the scientific approach of ‘critical rationalism’, three design paradigms of large parks in different conceptions of contemporary urban landscapes are formulated based on quantitative and qualitative analysis, which are classified as the organic parks of North American ‘landscape urbanism’, the structural parks of German ‘landscape structuralism’ and the large parks of Chinese ‘urban inventory renewal’. By means of critical thinking in diverse cultural interpretations, the research aims to reveal remarkable similarities and differences between the cultures in the Western world according to their understanding of landscapes (coherent vs. creative), landscape and ecology (representation vs. metaphor), and landscape and life (diversity vs. unpredictability). Through theoretical analysis and case studies, it demonstrates that the international park paradigms characterised by complexity, diversity, sustainability, appropriation and identity can influence various socio-cultural, ecological, and aesthetic developments. Finally, the analytical results of the two park paradigms in Western countries are adopted in the examination of landscape architectural park models and urbanistic theoretical frameworks in China. This monograph is written primarily for scholars, professionals and students in the fields of landscape architecture, urban planning and architecture. The book, involving in-depth analysis about urban parks, green open spaces, green infrastructure and post-industrial landscapes, will have international appeal.
