Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This text reflects the changing contexts of cognitive rehabilitation practice, increased recognition of the multitude of psychological and somatic factors that affect cognitive function, and the emergence of novel theories that inform and guide clinical practice. Chapter 1 introduces five paradigms that serve as the context for cognitive rehabilitation today. In Chapter 2, we review key cognitive functions typically affected by acquired brain damage. Chapter 3 introduces the concept of "psychological mindedness" and provides counseling frameworks and strategies that can be incorporated in cognitive rehabilitation sessions to promote client engagement and motivation. Chapter 4 provides an overview of the Rehabilitation Treatment Specification System, a framework to describe and classify our treatments. Chapter 5 further builds on the Planning, Implementation, Evaluation framework. The remaining chapters apply the principles and frameworks to instruction in the use of cognitive strategies (Chapter 7) and external cognitive aids (Chapter 8), teaching discrete facts and routines (Chapter 6), and methods to support social competence after brain injury (Chapter 9). Other topics are rehabilitation in the inpatient setting (Chapter 10); a review of the current state of computer-based, drill-focused cognitive rehabilitation (Chapter 11); and cognitive rehabilitation for clients with functional cognitive symptoms (Chapter 12)"--

Book excerpt: Sohlberg and Mateer's landmark introductory text helped put cognitive rehabilitation on the map for a generation of clinicians, researchers, educators, and students. The second edition reflects advances in neuroscience and computer technology, coupled with changes in service delivery models. The authors describe a broad range of clinical interventions for assisting persons with acquired cognitive impairments--including deficits in attention, memory, executive functions, and communication--and for managing associated emotional and behavioral issues. For each approach, theoretical underpinnings are reviewed in depth and clinical protocols delineated. Difficult concepts are explained in a clear, straightforward fashion, with realistic case examples bringing the material to life. Also included are samples of relevant assessment instruments, rating scales, and patient handouts. Throughout, the volume emphasizes the need to work from a community perspective, providing a framework for forming collaborative partnerships with families and caregivers. It is an essential resource for professionals across a wide variety of rehabilitation specialties.

They situate the issues within an overall context that considers the different types and levels of diagnosis and assessment, the adequacy of underlying cognitive theory for rehabilitation, and more importantly, the clinical effectiveness of current treatments to improve functional recovery. By employing an evidence-based approach that critically evaluates the published literature, the book provides for a better understanding of the strengths and limitations of the cognitive approach and hopefully a more realistic expectation of its outcome for patients with neurological deficits." "The book will serve as a valuable source for a wide spectrum of professionals who deal with the neuropsychological and neurological effects of brain damage."--BOOK JACKET.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present volume has come about through an awareness of the absence of any cohesive and substantive source on the treatment of cognitive dysfunction following brain insult. I initiated the devel opment of our annual symposium Models and Techniques of Cognitive Rehabilitation, on which the present volume is based, so as to educate myself, as well as others, about the state of the art in modifying cognitive processes in the brain, injured. I became aware of the need for interventive strategies for the brain, injured while a graduate student. Brain functions had, for a long time, always fascinated me, but from an academic perspective. I was confronted with the clinical consequences of brain injury while administering batteries of neuro psychological tests, and this experience added another dimension to my interest in brain functions. I felt grossly inadequate because I was able to rather eloquently describe changes in brain-behavior relations with neuropsychological tests, but could only generate re commendations based solely on the use of compensatory strategies and occasionally on some unfounded, and probably naive, remedial guess. A literature search at this time yielded devastating, little informa tion. The next several years were characterized by a pseudo-obsession, occurring at times without total awareness, with methods and tech niques which might alter impaired brain-behavior relations. Completing graduate school, however, required that these thoughts take a secondary position relative to more typical graduate student thoughts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past 15 years there have been significant advances in cognitive analysis of many neuropsychological syndromes. In such analyses, investigators aim to understand cognitive deficits in terms of impairments to particular processes within a model of normal cognitive performance. In addition, evidence from cognitive impairments can be used to help constrain theories of normal performance. However, until recently cognitive neuropsychological analyses had made little penetration of clinical rehabilitation practice. This situation is now beginning to change, though, as in several areas of study, clinical practitioners use cognitive models and cognitive neuropsychological analyses to guide both assessment and rehabilitation. The marrying of cognitive neuropsychology to cognitive rehabilitation offers great promise for producing a principled approach to rehabilitation, tailored to the cognitive deficits in particular patients. This book brings together a series of empirical and review papers dealing with recent attempts to apply cognitive neuropsychology to cognitive rehabilitation. The book is divided into 6 topic areas covering: Visual Object Recognition, Visual Attention, Motor Performance, Spoken Language and Phonological Skills, Written Language, and Memory. Within each topic, there is a review chapter, covering both recent advances in cognitive theory and attempts to apply this to rehabilitation, followed by empirical papers reporting on rehabilitation-related research. There are, additionally, overview chapters covering the general implications of cognitive neuropsychological research for cognitive rehabilitation, and introductions to the chapters within each topic area. The papers present both a state-of-the-art review and an attempt to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of the cognitive neuropsychological approach to cognitive rehabilitation. Papers evaluate the utility of cognitive neuropsychological analyses for both diagnosis and the design of therapy, and they also assess the use of rehabilitation research for testing theories of normal performance. The book is essential reading for all those interested in the application of cognitive neuropsychology to cognitive rehabilitation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to educate readers regarding the efficacy of cognitive rehabilitation across a variety of neurological conditions, with specific emphasis on rehabilitation-related change detectable via neuroimaging. For ease of reference, this information is divided into separate chapters by neurological condition, since the nature of cognitive impairment and mechanism of rehabilitation may differ across populations. Also included are discussions of the use of neuroimaging in cognitive rehabilitation trials, rigorous design of cognitive rehabilitation trials to have greater scientific impact (e.g., obtaining Class I evidence), and future directions for the field. As such, the book is designed to be useful to both clinicians and researchers involved in the rehabilitation of such conditions so that they can make informed decisions regarding evidence-based treatment to deploy in clinical settings or to further study in research endeavors.
