Book excerpt: This monograph is concerned with the properties of rational functions with coefficients which are partial differential operators; the Laplace transform calculus will follow from these properties in a standard way once the properties themselves have been established. A general existence theory for a class of hypoelliptic linear partial differential boundary problems is also developed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive, self-contained treatment of Fourier analysis and wavelets—now in a new edition Through expansive coverage and easy-to-follow explanations, A First Course in Wavelets with Fourier Analysis, Second Edition provides a self-contained mathematical treatment of Fourier analysis and wavelets, while uniquely presenting signal analysis applications and problems. Essential and fundamental ideas are presented in an effort to make the book accessible to a broad audience, and, in addition, their applications to signal processing are kept at an elementary level. The book begins with an introduction to vector spaces, inner product spaces, and other preliminary topics in analysis. Subsequent chapters feature: The development of a Fourier series, Fourier transform, and discrete Fourier analysis Improved sections devoted to continuous wavelets and two-dimensional wavelets The analysis of Haar, Shannon, and linear spline wavelets The general theory of multi-resolution analysis Updated MATLAB code and expanded applications to signal processing The construction, smoothness, and computation of Daubechies' wavelets Advanced topics such as wavelets in higher dimensions, decomposition and reconstruction, and wavelet transform Applications to signal processing are provided throughout the book, most involving the filtering and compression of signals from audio or video. Some of these applications are presented first in the context of Fourier analysis and are later explored in the chapters on wavelets. New exercises introduce additional applications, and complete proofs accompany the discussion of each presented theory. Extensive appendices outline more advanced proofs and partial solutions to exercises as well as updated MATLAB routines that supplement the presented examples. A First Course in Wavelets with Fourier Analysis, Second Edition is an excellent book for courses in mathematics and engineering at the upper-undergraduate and graduate levels. It is also a valuable resource for mathematicians, signal processing engineers, and scientists who wish to learn about wavelet theory and Fourier analysis on an elementary level.

Book excerpt: This introduction to modern operational calculus offers a classic exposition of Laplace transform theory and its application to the solution of ordinary and partial differential equations. The treatment is addressed to graduate students in engineering, physics, and applied mathematics and may be used as a primary text or supplementary reading. Chief topics include the theorems or rules of the operational calculus, evaluation of integrals and establishment of mathematical relationships, derivation of Laplace transforms of various functions, the Laplace transform for a finite interval, and other subjects. Many problems and illustrative examples appear throughout the book, which is further augmented by helpful Appendixes. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An authorised reissue of the long out of print classic textbook, Advanced Calculus by the late Dr Lynn Loomis and Dr Shlomo Sternberg both of Harvard University has been a revered but hard to find textbook for the advanced calculus course for decades. This book is based on an honors course in advanced calculus that the authors gave in the 1960's. The foundational material, presented in the unstarred sections of Chapters 1 through 11, was normally covered, but different applications of this basic material were stressed from year to year, and the book therefore contains more material than was covered in any one year. It can accordingly be used (with omissions) as a text for a year's course in advanced calculus, or as a text for a three-semester introduction to analysis. The prerequisites are a good grounding in the calculus of one variable from a mathematically rigorous point of view, together with some acquaintance with linear algebra. The reader should be familiar with limit and continuity type arguments and have a certain amount of mathematical sophistication. As possible introductory texts, we mention Differential and Integral Calculus by R Courant, Calculus by T Apostol, Calculus by M Spivak, and Pure Mathematics by G Hardy. The reader should also have some experience with partial derivatives. In overall plan the book divides roughly into a first half which develops the calculus (principally the differential calculus) in the setting of normed vector spaces, and a second half which deals with the calculus of differentiable manifolds.

Book excerpt: This introduction to Laplace transforms and Fourier series is aimed at second year students in applied mathematics. It is unusual in treating Laplace transforms at a relatively simple level with many examples. Mathematics students do not usually meet this material until later in their degree course but applied mathematicians and engineers need an early introduction. Suitable as a course text, it will also be of interest to physicists and engineers as supplementary material.

This book was released on 2013-11-27 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is not the object of the author to present comprehensive cov erage of any particular integral transformation or of any particular development of generalized functions, for there are books available in which this is done. Rather, this consists more of an introductory survey in which various ideas are explored. The Laplace transforma tion is taken as the model type of an integral transformation and a number of its properties are developed; later, the Fourier transfor mation is introduced. The operational calculus of Mikusinski is pre sented as a method of introducing generalized functions associated with the Laplace transformation. The construction is analogous to the construction of the rational numbers from the integers. Further on, generalized functions associated with the problem of extension of the Fourier transformation are introduced. This construction is anal ogous to the construction of the reals from the rationals by means of Cauchy sequences. A chapter with sections on a variety of trans formations is adjoined. Necessary levels of sophistication start low in the first chapter, but they grow considerably in some sections of later chapters. Background needs are stated at the beginnings of each chapter. Many theorems are given without proofs, which seems appro priate for the goals in mind. A selection of references is included. Without showing many of the details of rigor it is hoped that a strong indication is given that a firm mathematical foundation does actu ally exist for such entities as the "Dirac delta-function".
