This book was released on 2011-10-05 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intellectual property law in the United States does not work well and it needs to be reformed—but not for the reasons given by most critics. The issue is not that intellectual property rights are too easily obtained, too broad in scope, and too long in duration. Rather, the primary problem is overreaching by publishers, producers, artists, and others who abuse intellectual property law by claiming stronger rights than the law actually gives them. From copyfraud—like phony copyright notices attached to the U.S. Constitution—to lawsuits designed to prevent people from poking fun at Barbie, from controversies over digital sampling in hip-hop to Major League Baseball's ubiquitous restriction on sharing any "accounts and descriptions of this game," overreaching claims of intellectual property rights are everywhere. Overreaching interferes with legitimate uses and reproduction of a wide variety of works, imposes enormous social and economic costs, and ultimately undermines creative endeavors. As this book reveals, the solution is not to change the scope or content of intellectual property rights, but to create mechanisms to prevent people asserting rights beyond those they legitimately possess. While there are many other books on intellectual property, this is the first to examine overreaching as a distinct problem and to show how to solve it. Jason Mazzone makes a series of timely proposals by which government, organizations, and ordinary people can stand up to creators and content providers when they seek to grab more than the law gives them.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Data migration, generally referred to as the process of reading data from their source and inserting them into a target database, is an important element of data extract, transform, and load (ETL) systems. During data migration, errors can occur during data transmission. These errors can directly affect the quality of the data in the target database. Therefore, verifying the correctness of the outcome is a critical component of a data migration operation. Current methods in data migration correctness verification have many limitations, including incompleteness and inaccuracy. This paper describes an innovative method that applies the well-proven checksum methodology to verify the correctness of the data migration outcome. This method performs a thorough and accurate verification on the correctness of the migrated data, mitigating most of the weaknesses associated with current verification methods. This method is also easy to implement and will greatly enhance the quality of data migration operations.

Book excerpt: An updated, revised, and comprehensive overview of the concepts related to cloud computing, including recent applications, innovations, and its future evolution. In this Essential Knowledge volume, Nayan B. Ruparelia provides an updated and revised version of Cloud Computing, first published in 2016, to address not only the fact that cloud computing has become a ubiquitous part of mainstream computing since then but also has made strides in other key aspects of the technology’s development, including: cloud computing’s history, updated security fundamentals that provide examples of Identity and Access Management (IAM) use that illustrate the difference between on-premise (i.e., conventional) security and cloud-based security implementation and Security Information and Event Management SIEM), an updated discussion of data migration to the cloud, a new chapter on data integrity, cloud native computing, the use of microservice design patterns, cloud automation using orchestrators and tools such as Kubernetes, a comparison of common public clouds (Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud Platform, and Amazon AWS), and a future outlook for cloud computing. An indispensable guide to cloud computing for the layperson, Cloud Computing cuts through the technical jargon and details that are irrelevant to nontechnologists, as well as the marketing hype, and explains clearly what cloud computing is, when to use it (and when not to), how to select a cloud service, how to integrate it with other technologies, and what the best practices are for its adoption.

Book excerpt: This book tells the story of the turbulent decades when the book publishing industry collided with the great technological revolution of our time. From the surge of ebooks to the self-publishing explosion and the growing popularity of audiobooks, Book Wars provides a comprehensive and fine-grained account of technological disruption in one of our most important and successful creative industries. Like other sectors, publishing has been thrown into disarray by the digital revolution. The foundation on which this industry had been based for 500 years – the packaging and sale of words and images in the form of printed books – was called into question by a technological revolution that enabled symbolic content to be stored, manipulated and transmitted quickly and cheaply. Publishers and retailers found themselves facing a proliferation of new players who were offering new products and services and challenging some of their most deeply held principles and beliefs. The old industry was suddenly thrust into the limelight as bitter conflicts erupted between publishers and new entrants, including powerful new tech giants who saw the world in very different ways. The book wars had begun. While ebooks were at the heart of many of these conflicts, Thompson argues that the most fundamental consequences lie elsewhere. The print-on-paper book has proven to be a remarkably resilient cultural form, but the digital revolution has transformed the industry in other ways, spawning new players which now wield unprecedented power and giving rise to an array of new publishing forms. Most important of all, it has transformed the broader information and communication environment, creating new challenges and new opportunities for publishers as they seek to redefine their role in the digital age. This unrivalled account of the book publishing industry as it faces its greatest challenge since Gutenberg will be essential reading for anyone interested in books and their future.
