Book excerpt: Results of an extensive experimental program conducted to determine the material, bond characteristics, and time-dependent deformations of a proposed self-consolidating concrete (SCC) mixture for bridge girders are presented. This research program was completed in three phases. The first phase consisted of 15 full-scale, pretensioned SCC flexural specimens tested to evaluate their transfer and development lengths. These specimens included both single-strand and multiple-strand beams, as well as specimens designed to evaluate the so-called 'top-strand' effect. The top-strand specimens, with more than 20 inches of concrete below the strand, were tested to evaluate the current American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials requirement of a 30% increase in the development length when the concrete below the strand is more than 12 inches. Strand end-slip measurements, used to estimate transfer lengths, indicated the proposed SCC mixture meets ACI and AASHTO requirements. In addition, flexural tests confirmed the proposed SCC mixture also meets current code requirements for development length. The second phase was to evaluate the elastic shortening, creep, and shrinkage properties of the proposed SCC mixture for bridge girders. Four bridge girders with an inverted-T profile were used to measure these time-dependent deformations. In two of the specimens, the strands were tensioned to 75% of the ultimate tensile strength, simulating a girder at service. Strands of the other two specimens were left untensioned to evaluate shrinkage effect of the concrete alone. The shrinkage was then subtracted from the fully tensioned specimens and elastic shortening and creep were isolated after relaxation losses were calculated from code expressions. In addition, the fully tensioned specimens were used to determine transfer lengths of the prestressing strand. The final phase of the program was to record strain measurements of the actual bridge girders used in the field. Elastic shortening, creep, and shrinkage prestress losses of the proposed SCC mixture were compared with current design equations. Instrumentation of seven pretensioned girders in a five-span bridge located in Cowley County, Kansas, was used to measure time-dependent deformations. Three of these girders utilized SCC, while the other four were cast with conventional concrete.

Transfer length measurements (conducted on two AASHTO Type IV HPLWC prestressed girders) indicated an average transfer length of 17 inches, well below the AASHTO and ACI requirements. Two HPLWC AASHTO Type II girders and a 48 x 8 inch normal weight 4000-psi concrete deck were fabricated. The girders were cast of concretes with a compressive strength of 6380 psi and a unit weight of 114 pcf. Full scale testing of the girders was conducted to evaluate development length and flexural strength in HPLWC composite girders. Embedment lengths of five, six, and eight feet were evaluated. Tests indicated a development length of about 72 inches, marginally below the ACI and AASHTO requirements. All tested girders exceeded their theoretical flexural capacity by 24% to 30%. A third composite Type II girder was cast of high performance normal weight concrete and topped with a 48 x 8 inch normal weight 4000-psi concrete deck. This girder was intended as a control specimen. Prestress losses in the HPLWC AASHTO Type IV girders monitored over a nine-month period were found to be less than those calculated using the ACI and PCI models.

Book excerpt: This report presents the findings of a study that developed and tested high- strength lightweight concrete (HSLC) mixes having strengths from 8,000 psi to 12,000 psi made using slate lightweight aggregate. Based on optimized mix designs, 6 pretensioned AASHTO Type II girders were constructed using 8,000 psi and 10,000 psi slate HSLC and were prestressed using 0.6-inch diameter LOLAX strands tensioned to 75% of strand ultimate stress. The strands received no special preparation prior to girder casting. After initial curing for approximately 24 hours, transfer length measurements were taken from time of release until the beams reached an age of 14 days. The current AASHTO and ACI code provisions conservatively predicted transfer length for slate HSLC; modification of the current code specifications for transfer length was not necessary for slate HSLC. A direct pullout test was performed on both concrete design strengths to determine the bond between the slate lightweight concrete and the prestressing strand. A somewhat lower bond stress developed between the prestressing strand and the lightweight concrete when compared to similar strengths of normal-weight concrete. However, the average pullout strength for both series exceeded the minimum required value for 0.6-inch diameter strand of 43.2 kips. Tests were conducted on each girder end to determine development length characteristics.

Book excerpt: Self-consolidating concrete (SCC) is a new, innovative construction material that can be placed into forms without the need for mechanical vibration. The mixture proportions are critical for producing quality SCC and require an optimized combination of coarse and fine aggregates, cement, water, and chemical and mineral admixtures. The required mixture constituents and proportions may affect the mechanical properties, bond characteristics, and long-term behavior, and SCC may not provide the same inservice performance as conventional concrete (CC). Different SCC mixture constituents and proportions were evaluated for mechanical properties, shear characteristics, bond characteristics, creep, and durability. Variables evaluated included mixture type (CC or SCC), coarse aggregate type (river gravel or limestone), and coarse aggregate volume. To correlate these results with full-scale samples and investigate structural behavior related to strand bond properties, four girder-deck systems, 40 ft (12 m) long, with CC and SCC pretensioned girders were fabricated and tested. Results from the research indicate that the American Association of State Highway Transportation Officials Load and Resistance Factor Design (AASHTO LRFD) Specifications can be used to estimate the mechanical properties of SCC for a concrete compressive strength range of 5 to 10 ksi (34 to 70 MPa). In addition, the research team developed prediction equations for concrete compressive strength ranges from 5 to 16 ksi (34 to 110 MPa). With respect to shear characteristics, a more appropriate expression is proposed to estimate the concrete shear strength for CC and SCC girders with a compressive strength greater than 10 ksi (70 MPa). The author found that girder-deck systems with Type A SCC girders exhibit similar flexural performance as deck-systems with CC girders. The AASHTO LRFD (2006) equations for computing the cracking moment, nominal moment, transfer length, development length, and prestress losses may be used for SCC girder-deck systems similar to those tested in this study. For environments exhibiting freeze-thaw cycles, a minimum 16-hour release strength of 7 ksi (48 MPa) is recommended for SCC mixtures.
