For a service of this kind I ought, at the outset, to confess, what any attempt to ren der it would doubtless prove, that I am but poorly equipped. Not being a farmer by occupation, but following another calling, it would be presumptuous for me to assume the function of an adviser or in structor upon any especial agricultural theme. Without, therefore, starting upon any such, to me, unfamiliar path, let me ask your at tention to a few considerations of a general rather than especial nature, and which may not be foreign to your tastes and interests. As a member of the Legislature of Massachusetts, the body to which is intrusted the duty of looking after, as far as this can be done by the law making power, the varied interests of the Common wealth, among which the agricultural occupies a place second to none in importance, the topic which seems to me an appropriate one upon which to ofl'er a few suggestions, is the relation of the Farmer to the State. Although the people of Massachusetts are engaged in many different branches of industry, the welfare of each depends, upon the welfare of the rest. The most prosperous country is not the one which is exclusively commercial, manufacturing or agricultural, but the one in which all these industries thrive and form together a har monious whole. Whatever improvements are made, redound to thebenefit of the whole, and grow out of the stern and insatiable demand of the whole, for every means by which they can be aided in their work. On this account we have already outstripped the best countries of Europe in some of our agricultural Operations, and in the most important inventions. For instance, American reaping and mowing machines have been brought to a high state of perfection within the last ten years. They have already a world-wide reputation. Their superiority is generally acknowledged, and the credit of having for the first time made the principles applicable to such machinery practically usefdl, undoubtedly belongs to our own ingenious mechanics. Some years ago the American machines were brought to trial at the exhibition at Paris, in competition with the world. This trial took place in a field of oats about forty miles from the city, each machine having about an acre to cut. Three machines were ordered for the first trial, one American, one English, and a third from Algeria, all at the same time raking as well as cutting. The American machine did its work in twenty two minutes, the English in sixty-six, and the Algerian in seventy-two. At a subsequent trial on the same piece, when three other machines were entered, of American, English and French manufacture, the American ma chine cut its acre in twenty-two minutes, while the two others failed. The successful competitor on this occasion, did its work in the most exquisite manner, says a French journal, not leaving a single stalk ungathered, and it discharged the grain in the most perfect shape as if placed by hand for the binders. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Transactions of the Housatonic Agricultural Society, Great Barrington, Mass;, 1882-1885 Let us now consider a few facts showing the advantages which country boys have over city boys. Some of you may remember the paper, showing the disadvantages of city boys, and the advantages of country boys, which I had published some time ago. In this paper it was shown that most of the leading men of Springfield were either born in the country or in small villages. Some may think that the list was unfairly made out, or they may think the case of Springfield exceptional. In regard to the first objection I will say that I made out the list as fairly as I could. I selected the leading merchants, lawyers, bankers and teachers. The selection was such that inthe majority of cases I could have made no exceptions. Whether Spring field is ah exceptional city is not so easily answered, but I have evi dence that it is not. In the city of Sandusky four-fifths of the lead ing men have had more or less of farm life or training. Some argue that the larger cities, such as Chicago and Boston, would show a dif ferent result, and that some of the boys raised in Springfield and Sandusky might be found occupying places of prominence in the great cities. But investigation, so far as it has been made, does not sup port this theory. A New York.merchant recently stated that of the successful business men of New York, fully seven tenths came from the country. It is also well to recollect that not one of the twenty one presidents of the United States was born in a city. Farms are the places to raise boys. If this statement is so, there is no better test than that'of success. Perhaps it is not true. The majority of successful men came from the farms. But what is success? The answer might be, material success the outstripping of competitors. The great characteristic of the men I have described is power. They have great physical power and firmness of will. They are almost al ways men oi great pertinacity. The bulldog element is strong in them. They often have other important characteristics, such as clearness of judgment nevertheless, the more I think, the more am I convinced that strenuousness of will is wanting. Frugality, especially in the financial world, is a second nature to such men as we have mentioned. Their wants are few. Even when they are wealthy, their personal requirements are simple, although they may allow their families to be extravagant. This faculty helped to give them an early start in life. Few men accomplish much who do not begin to save while they 'are young. It has been said by millionaires that it is harder to save the first.$1,000 than a For the young fellow who has to be gm m a small way and encounters constant temptations to spend, it 1s no easy task to save To sum up, the central qualities nec essary for success are physical vigor, strength of will and frugality.
