Book excerpt: The production of textile materials comprises a very large and complex global industry that utilises a diverse range of fibre types and creates a variety of textile products. As the great majority of such products are coloured, predominantly using aqueous dyeing processes, the coloration of textiles is a large-scale global business in which complex procedures are used to apply different types of dye to the various types of textile material. The development of such dyeing processes is the result of substantial research activity, undertaken over many decades, into the physico-chemical aspects of dye adsorption and the establishment of ‘dyeing theory’, which seeks to describe the mechanism by which dyes interact with textile fibres. Physico-Chemical Aspects of Textile Coloration provides a comprehensive treatment of the physical chemistry involved in the dyeing of the major types of natural, man-made and synthetic fibres with the principal types of dye. The book covers: fundamental aspects of the physical and chemical structure of both fibres and dyes, together with the structure and properties of water, in relation to dyeing; dyeing as an area of study as well as the terminology employed in dyeing technology and science; contemporary views of intermolecular forces and the nature of the interactions that can occur between dyes and fibres at a molecular level; fundamental principles involved in dyeing theory, as represented by the thermodynamics and kinetics of dye sorption; detailed accounts of the mechanism of dyeing that applies to cotton (and other cellulosic fibres), polyester, polyamide, wool, polyacrylonitrile and silk fibres; non-aqueous dyeing, as represented by the use of air, organic solvents and supercritical CO2 fluid as alternatives to water as application medium. The up-to-date text is supported by a large number of tables, figures and illustrations as well as footnotes and widespread use of references to published work. The book is essential reading for students, teachers, researchers and professionals involved in textile coloration.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The suggestion that quantum-mechanical tunnelling might be a significant factor in some chemical reactions was first made fifty years ago by Hund, very soon after the principles of wave mechanics had been established by de Broglie, Schrodinger and Heisenberg, and similar ideas were put forward during the following thirty years by a number of authors. It was realised from the beginning that such effects would be particularly prominent in reactions involving the movement of protons or hydrogen atoms, and both theoretical and experimental work received a powerful stimulus in the discovery of deuterium in 1932. During the last twenty years theoretical predictions about the tunnel effect have been supported by an increasing body of experimental evidence, derived especially from studies of hydrogen isotope effects. The present book presents an attempt to summarize this evidence and to indicate the main lines of the basic theory. Details of mathematical manipu lation are restricted mainly to Chapter 2 and the Appendices, and many readers may prefer to confine themselves to the results obtained. The main emphasis has been on the kinetics of chemical reactions involving the transfer of protons, hydrogen atoms or hydride ions, although Chapter 6 gives an account of the role of the tunnel effect in molecular spectra, and Chapter 7 makes some mention of tunnelling in solid state phenomena, biological processes and the electrolytic discharge of hydrogen. Only passing references have been made to tunnelling by electrons.

Book excerpt: Martin Fleischmann was truly one of the ‘fathers’ ofmodern electrochemistry having made major contributions to diversetopics within electrochemical science and technology. These includethe theory and practice of voltammetry and in situspectroscopic techniques, instrumentation, electrochemical phaseformation, corrosion, electrochemical engineering, electrosynthesisand cold fusion. While intended to honour the memory of Martin Fleischmann,Developments in Electrochemistry is neither a biography nora history of his contributions. Rather, the book is aseries of critical reviews of topics in electrochemical scienceassociated with Martin Fleischmann but remaining importanttoday. The authors are all scientists with outstandinginternational reputations who have made their own contribution totheir topic; most have also worked with Martin Fleischmann andbenefitted from his guidance. Each of the 19 chapters within this volume begin with an outlineof Martin Fleischmann’s contribution to the topic, followedby examples of research, established applications and prospects forfuture developments. The book is of interest to both students and experienced workersin universities and industry who are active in developingelectrochemical science.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Launched in 1995 as a companion to the Dictionary of Organic Compounds, the Organic Chemist’s Desk Reference has been essential reading for laboratory chemists who need a succinct guide to the ‘nuts and bolts’ of organic chemistry — the literature, nomenclature, stereochemistry, spectroscopy, hazard information, and laboratory data. This third edition reflects changes in the dissemination of chemical information, revisions to chemical nomenclature, and the adoption of new techniques in NMR spectroscopy, which have taken place since publication of the last edition in 2011. Organic chemistry embraces many other disciplines — from material sciences to molecular biology — whose practitioners will benefit from the comprehensive but concise information brought together in this book. Extensively revised and updated, this new edition contains the very latest data that chemists need access to for experimentation and research.

The book is comprised of 10 chapters that present information relevant to applied research. The text first covers the elementary chemical kinetics of elementary steps, and then proceeds to discussing catalysis. The next chapter tackles simplified kinetics of sequences at the steady state. Chapter 5 deals with coupled sequences in reaction networks, while Chapter 6 talks about autocatalysis and inhibition. The seventh chapter describes the irreducible transport phenomena in chemical kinetics. The next two chapters discuss the correlations in homogenous kinetics and heterogeneous catalysis, respectively. The last chapter covers the analysis of reaction networks. The book will be of great use to students, researchers, and practitioners of scientific disciplines that deal with chemical reaction, particularly chemistry and chemical engineering.

Compiled to celebrate the centenary of the founding of the Faraday Society in 1903, this collection presents some of the key papers published in Faraday journals over the past one hundred years. The feature articles were all written by leaders in their field, including a number of Nobel Prize winners such as Lord George Porter and John Pople, and cover a breadth of topics demonstrating the wide range of scientific fields which the Faraday Society, and now the RSC Faraday Division, seek to promote. Topics include: Intermolecular Forces; Ultrafast Processes; Astrophysical Chemistry; Polymers; and Electrochemistry. Each article is accompanied by a commentary which puts it in context, describes its influence and shows how the field has developed since its publication. 100 Years of Physical Chemistry: A Collection of Landmark Papers will be welcomed by anyone interested in the historical development of physical chemistry, and will be a valued addition to any library shelf.
