Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: PERFUME FROM PROVENCE, which became an instant bestseller when it was first published in the 1930s, created a world that was both nostalgic and unique. Telling of Lady Fortescue’s home in Provence, it was followed by SUNSET HOUSE, the story of her reclamation of a smaller, old stone farmhouse where she lived after her husband’s death. It was from Sunset House, set in a little lost village perched on a peak of the Alpes Maritimes, that she watched the Mobilisation Générale at the beginning of WWII. Thousands of weary French soldiers, called from their homes at a moment’s notice, tramped past Sunset House. The French Army boarded many of the officers on her but, so concerned was she at the plight of the humble poilu, that she immediately set about finding food and shelter for them. With the help of her friend ‘Mademoiselle’, she began to set up foyers all over Provence where the mobilised men could rest and pass their leisure. Then, as the war advanced, as Calais fell to the Germans, Lady Fortescue realised she was about to be trapped in France as an enemy alien and so began her mad dash across the country to Brittany, only a little ahead of the German Army, to make her escape on one of the last boats to leave France.

Book Synopsis Ordering Empire by : Nicholas Meihuizen
Download or read book Ordering Empire written by Nicholas Meihuizen and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2007 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the relationship between empire, its representations in poetry, and the principal ways of ordering the world at certain key historical moments as figured in the work of three poets associated with Southern Africa: Luis Vaz de Camões in the sixteenth century, Thomas Pringle in the nineteenth century, and Roy Campbell in the twentieth century. In its consideration of ways of 'ordering the world' the book draws on Michel Foucault's theory of epistemic periodisation. Positing the various consequences of such epistemic vision, yet connately dealing with the poets as specific individuals with their own predispositions, the book engages in analyses of selected passages from Camões' epic Os Lusíadas, along with analyses of various poems by Pringle and Campbell.

Download or read book Richard Hillary written by David A Ross and published by Grub Street Publishing. This book was released on 2008-09-22 with total page 657 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authoritative biography of the WWII ace fighter pilot, hero of the Battle of Britain and author of the classic wartime memoir The Last Enemy. As both a legendary flying ace and an accomplished author, Richard Hillary achieved a unique kind of immortality during his tragically short life. Born in Australia and raised in England, he attended Oxford University before joining the Royal Air Force at the outbreak of World War II. Flying Spitfires in the 603 Squadron, he became an ace in the Battle of Britain. Though he managed to survive being shot down in September 1940, he suffered severe burns to his face and hands. It was during his long and painful recovery that Hillary wrote his masterpiece, The Last Enemy. Then, anxious to return to flying, he died when his Bristol Blenheim bomber crashed in ‘mysterious’ circumstances in 1943. Cutting through myth and misinformation, biographer David Ross draws on extensive archival research, including from the Richard Hillary Trust Archive in Oxford, as well as interviews with Hillary’s contemporaries. This complete biography also features many previously unseen photographs.
