This book was released on 2013 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "David Smith's On The Edge of Freedom is the most nuanced, detailed and sophisticated study of the Underground Railroad in rural Pennsylvania that I have ever read. Based on a wide variety of primary sources, this study offers a series of fresh insights about how the fugitive crisis along the Mason-Dixon Line directly impacted the wider national struggle over slavery and union." -- Matthew Pinkser, Dickinson College. David G. Smith has delivered a revelatory portrait of one of the most important political battlegrounds of antebellum America, where networks of fugitive slaves, slave-catchers, informers, and Underground Railroad activists lived side by side in a tangled web. He sheds much new light on the struggle of the abolitionism to take route in southern Pennsylvania's difficult soil, and challenges cherished preconceptions of the North as solidly anti-slavery and friendly to fugitive slaves. In the process, he has given us a deeper understanding of the daunting moral complexities of life in the pre-Civil War borderland. This is a book to be reckoned with."-Fergus M. Bordewich, author of America"s Great debate: Henry Clay, Stephen A. Douglas, and the Compromise that Preserved the Union. In this well wrought and powerful narrative, Smith examines the vital borderland of south central Pennsylvania. Challenging scholars to re-think our understanding of the fugitive slave law, Smith examines that issue through white and black perspectives over nearly fifty years of sectional conflict, war, and reconstruction. This is an important contribution to our understanding of how war itself intensified the fugitive slave issue and redirected it. Smith's thorough appendices demonstrate remarkable and comprehensive research reflected in this important narrative."-Orville Vernon Burton, author of The Age of Lincoln.

Book excerpt: The primary objective of this report is to present a prediction method for determining the forces, moments, and six-degree-of-freedom trajectories associated with stores released from single, TER, or MER configurations on fighter-bomber aircraft up to the critical speed. A secondary objective is to present important experimental results and comparison with theory from an extensive wind-tunnel test program designed to provide data to test the theory through systematic measurements of flow fields, store load distributions, store forces and moments, and captive-store trajectories.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Within the context of Industrial 4.0 and beyond, developing and managing the technologies and operations key to sustaining the success of manufacturing businesses is crucial, and the promotion of manufacturing-engineering education, training, and research is of vital importance. This book presents the proceedings of ICMR 2022, the 19th International Conference in Manufacturing Research, Incorporating the 36th National Conference in Manufacturing Research, held in Derby, UK, from 6 - 8 September 2022. For over two decades, ICMR has been the main manufacturing research conference held in the UK. Bringing together researchers, academics, and industrialists to share their knowledge and experience, the conference provides a friendly and inclusive platform for a broad community of researchers who share the common goal of making digital and advanced manufacturing as efficient and effective as possible. The theme of ICMR2022 is smart manufacturing. Of the 78 papers submitted, 58 were accepted for presentation after review and are included here. This represents an acceptance rate of 72%. The book is divided into 8 sections: smart manufacturing; digital manufacturing; additive manufacturing; robotics and industrial automation; composite manufacturing and machining processes; product design, development and quality management; information and knowledge management; and decision support and production optimization. Exploring all core areas of digital and advanced manufacturing engineering, the book will be of interest to all those working in the field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book promotes a radical alternative impact on youth policy in Europe to overcome the situation of vulnerability and discrimination of a growing number of youngsters in their transition from school to work. It follows a Human Development perspective in using the Capability Approach (CA) as analytical and methodological guiding tool to improve the social conditions of the most socially vulnerable young people in European societies. The mission of the interdisciplinary authors is to expand the actual chances of the young to actively shape their lives in a way they have reason to choose and value. This book is based on the research of the EU Collaborative Project “Making Capabilities Work” (WorkAble), funded by the EU within the Seventh Framework Programme. It is the first empirical project to pursue a justice theory perspective on a European level. It also contributes to a fundamental change in the currently mostly insufficient attempts within the human capital approach to use the labour market to ensure desired lifestyle forms and a secure income for vulnerable youth.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book addresses three themes which have been central to Leydesdorff's research: (1) the dynamics of science, technology, and innovation; (2) the scientometric operationalization of these concept; and (3) the elaboration in terms of a Triple Helix of university-industry-government relations. In this study, I discuss the relations among these themes. Using Luhmann's social-systems theory for modelling meaning processing and Shannon's theory for information processing, I show that synergy can add new options to an innovation system as redundancy. The capacity to develop new options is more important for innovation than past performance. Entertaining a model of possible future states makes a knowledge-based system increasingly anticipatory. The trade-off between the incursion of future states on the historical developments can be measured using the Triple-Helix synergy indicator. This is shown, for example, for the Italian national and regional systems of innovation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: " Freedom as Marronage" deepens our understanding of political freedom not only by situating slavery as freedom s opposite condition, but also by investigating the experiential significance of the equally important liminal and transitional social space "between" slavery and freedom. Roberts examines a specific form of flight from slavery"marronage"that was fundamental to the experience of Haitian slavery, but is integral to understanding the Haitian Revolution and has widespread application to European, New World, and black Diasporic societies. He pays close attention to the experience of the process by which people emerge "from "slavery "to "freedom, contending that freedom as marronage presents a useful conceptual device for those interested in understanding both normative ideals of political freedom and the origin of those ideals. Roberts investigates the dual anti-colonial and anti-slavery Haitian Revolution (1791-1804) and especially the ideas of German-Jewish thinker Hannah Arendt, Irish political theorist Philip Pettit, American fugitive-turned ex-slave Frederick Douglass, and the Martinican philosopher Edouard Glissant in developing a theory of freedom that offers a compelling interpretive lens to understand the quandaries of slavery, freedom, and political language that still confront us today."
