Book excerpt: When considering the operational performance of stainless steel weldments the most important points to consider are corrosion resistance, weld metal mechanical properties and the integrity ofthe weldedjoint. Mechanical and corrosion resistance properties are greatly influenced by the metallurgical processes that occur during welding or during heat treatment of welded components. This book is aimed, there fore, at providing information on the metallurgical problems that may be encountered during stainless steel welding. In this way we aim to help overcome a certain degree of insecurity that is often encountered in welding shops engaged in the welding of stainless steels and is often the cause of welding problems which may in some instances lead to the premature failure of the welded component. The metallurgical processes that occur during the welding of stainless steel are of a highly intricate nature. The present book focuses in particular on the signif icance of constitution diagrams, on the processes occurring during the solidification of weld metal and on the recrystallization and precipitation phenomena which take place in the area of the welds. There are specific chapters covering the hot cracking resistance during welding and the practical welding of a number of different stainless steel grades. In addition, recommendations are given as to the most suitable procedures to be followed in order to obtain maximum corrosion resistance and mechanical properties from the weldments.

Lim itations of the technique will be pointed out. Technological changes that have resulted in higher temperatures, pres sures, and velocities increase corrosion rates and markedly influence materials selection and design decisions. Continuous cycle systems impose increased demands on system reliability. New processes require more sophisticated equipment made of costlier metals which are often in short supply and subject to the vagaries of international commerce. The impact of continuing inflation influences decisions related to capital expenditures and maintenance costs. Some problems caused by these considerations can be solved, or solutions simplified, by the use of anodic protection. Technical and scientific information is presented on applications to industrial equipment, economics, design and installation, operation and maintenance, electrochemical principles, laboratory tests and procedures. A historical summary, patent list, glossary of terms, and a subject index are included. It is important to acknowledge that much of the information has been from the original work of others, including the publications of many friends.

Le deuxième chapitre traite des très nombreux phénomènes d'endommagement que l'on rencontre dans tous les matériaux (métalliques, polymères, verres, bétons ...), comme la cavitation, la fatigue, la corrosion sous contrainte. Le troisième chapitre donne les notions de mécanique de la rupture nécessaires pour comprendre la résistance de la fissuration. Le quatrième chapitre apporte les notions principales de mécanique du contact. Chaque chapitre est suivi d'exercices, énoncés de telle sorte que le lecteur est guidé pas à pas pour trouver la solution. De très nombreuses illustrations facilitent la lecture. Comportement mécanique des matériaux est le fruit du DEA "Mécanique et Matériaux" de la région parisienne. Il s'adresse aussi aux élèves-ingénieurs, ingénieurs et chercheurs. Les développements mathématiques y sont d'un accès facile. Les réelles difficultés, dont la maîtrise n'est pas exempte d'aspects passionnants, résident dans les fréquents changements d'échelle et dans le sens physique auquel il est fait appel.

CossLETT, the experts in the fields of X-Ray Optics and Microanalysis have met every third year to exchange their scientific experiences. Later meetings were held at Uppsala, Sweden in 1959, at Stanford, California in 1962, and at Orsay, Francein 1965. The participants in the 1968 Conference came from the following countries: Germany 140, France 60, Great Britain 55, USA 20, Netherlands 16, Switzerland 12, Austria 9, Sweden 7, Belgium 6, Japan 5, Italy 4, two each from Israel, Yugoslavia, Canada, Norway, Hungary and one each from Argentine, Poland, South Africa. As at the latest congress in Paris the following central topics were treated: General problems of X-ray optics, physical bases of electron beam microanalysis, quantitative problems of X-ray microanalysis, instrumentation, microdiffraction, applications to metal lurgy, mineralogy, and biology. An exhibition showing some of the most modern instruments formed an important part of the conference. The Springer-Verlag, Heidelberg, deserves thanks for the careful and speedy work they have performed in printing these conference proceedings.
