Book Synopsis The Punitive Society by : Michel Foucault
Download or read book The Punitive Society written by Michel Foucault and published by Picador. This book was released on 2018-08-07 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These thirteen lectures on the 'punitive society,' delivered at the Collège de France in the first three months of 1973, examine the way in which the relations between justice and truth that govern modern penal law were forged, and question what links them to the emergence of a new punitive regime that still dominates contemporary society. Praise for Foucault's Lectures at the Collège de France Series “Ideas spark off nearly every page...The words may have been spoken in [the 1970s], but they seem as alive and relevant as if they had been written yesterday.”—Bookforum “Foucault is quite central to our sense of where we are...[He] is carrying out, in the noblest way, the promiscuous aim of true culture.”—The Nation “[Foucault] has an alert and sensitive mind that can ignore the familiar surfaces of established intellectual coded and ask new questions...[He] gives dramatic quality to the movement of culture.”—The New York Review of Books

This book was released on 2014-07-18 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The relationship between the cultural Centre and cultural Margins has fascinated scholars for generations. Who, or what, determines what shall constitute the 'Centre' of a culture, its sacred and canonical forms and substance, and what the Margins? There are significant examples of the Margins of one generation moving to become the Centre of another. These are more than mere shifts of fashion and represent nothing less than a seismic cultural shift. How, and in what circumstances, can such a ...

Book Synopsis Stranded Encyclopedias, 1700–2000 by : Linn Holmberg
Download or read book Stranded Encyclopedias, 1700–2000 written by Linn Holmberg and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-03-21 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Stranded Encyclopedias, 1700–2000: Exploring Unfinished, Unpublished, Unsuccessful Encyclopedic Projects, fourteen scholars turn to the archives to challenge the way the history of modern encyclopedism has long been told. Rather than emphasizing successful publications and famous compilers, they explore encyclopedic enterprises that somehow failed. With a combined attention to script, print, and digital cultures, the volume highlights the many challenges facing those who have pursued complete knowledge in the past three hundred years. By introducing the concepts of stranded and strandedness, it also provides an analytical framework for approaching aspects often overlooked in histories of encyclopedias, books, and learning: the unpublished, the unfinished, the incomplete, the unsuccessfully disseminated, and the no-longer-updated. By examining these aspects in a new and original way, this book will be of value to anyone interested in the history of encyclopedism and lexicography, the history of knowledge, language, and ideas, and the history of books, writing, translating, and publishing. Chapters 1 and 4 are available open access under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License via link.springer.com.
Book Synopsis Rights, Representation, and Reform by : Jeremy Bentham
Download or read book Rights, Representation, and Reform written by Jeremy Bentham and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 558 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bentham's writings for the French Revolution were dominated by the themes of rights, representation, and reform. In 'Nonsense upon Stilts' (hitherto known as 'Anarchical Fallacies'), the most devastating attack on the theory of natural rights ever written, he argued that natural rights provided an unsuitable basis for stable legal and political arrangements. In discussing the nature of representation he produced the earliest utilitarian justification of political equality and representative democracy, even recommending women's suffrage.

This book was released on 1995 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: André Morellet (1727-1819), a representative but neglected figure of the eighteenth-century republic of letters, contributed to the Encyclopédie and collaborated with royal ministers. He frequented Parisian salons and supported liberty of conscience and commerce. He not only participated in the campaign to reform the Ancien Régime but also witnessed and documented its destruction during the 1790s. Morellet's life and works provide a splendid case study for the reconsideration of perennial questions about the Enlightenment and the Revolution.

Book Synopsis Moses Dobruska and the Invention of Social Philosophy by : Silvana Greco
Download or read book Moses Dobruska and the Invention of Social Philosophy written by Silvana Greco and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2022-01-19 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book proposes, for the first time, an in-depth analysis of the Philosophie sociale, published in Paris in 1793 by Moses Dobruska (1753-1794). Dobruska was a businessman, scholar, and social philosopher, born into a Jewish family in Moravia, who converted to Catholicism, gained wide recognition at the Habsburg court in Vienna, and then emigrated to France to join the French Revolution. Dobruska, who took on the name Junius Frey during his Parisian sojourn, barely survived his book. Accused of conspiring on behalf of foreign powers, he was guillotined on April 5, 1794, at the height of The Terror, on the same day as Georges Jacques Danton. From Dobruska's ideas, which were widely used between the late eighteenth century and the first decades of the nineteenth century without attribution to their author, emerge some of the key concepts of the social sciences as we know them today. An enthusiastic and unfortunate revolutionary and sometimes a brilliant theorist, Moses Dobruska deserves a role of his own in the history of sociology.
