Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The eleven essays in this volume illustrate the richness, complexity, and diversity of French medical culture in the nineteenth century, a period that witnessed the medicalization of French society. Medical themes permeated contemporary culture and politics, and medical discourse infused many levels of French society from the bastions of science - the medical faculties and research institutions - to novels, the theater, and the daily lives of citizens as patients. The contributors to this volume - all established scholars in the history of medicine - present the French medical experience from the point of view of both practitioners and patients, and show how medical themes colored popular perceptions and shaped public policies. Topics addressed range from popular medicine to elite Parisian medicine, the interaction of literary and medical discourse, social theater, medical research and practice, medical specialization and education. The essays reflect current trends of medico-historical analysis which emphasize the centrality of class, race, and gender in understanding concepts of disease and the practice of medicine. They show how the medical experience of patients, practitioners, students, and researchers varied according to social class, gender, and geography and the importance of these factors for the construction of disease.

Book excerpt: This volume serves to provide an international overview of personal injury compensation in different geographical areas (15 countries already included), with a special focus on the methods used to ascertain the injury and the related damages. It also goes on to clarify the logical and methodological steps required for a sequential, in-depth ascertainment of any traumatic event and the related personal damage, both pecuniary and non-pecuniary. Personal injury is a legal term for an injury to the body, mind or emotions suffered by the plaintiff under tort and/or civil law regulations. Damages related to the injury can be pecuniary or non-pecuniary in nature. Although several comparative studies and research projects on tort and civil law and personal injury claims aimed at developing new tools for promoting harmonization of private law have been performed at an international level, heterogeneity and divergences still exist in the definition and compensation of personal injury and damage across different national legislative systems. The starting point for any awarding procedure should be a medical, or rather a medico-legal, assessment to gain evidence on the trauma or event causing the injury, the mechanism of injury, the pre-existing health status of the injured party, and the health consequences of the injury (temporary and permanent impairment, work incapacity, etc.). In order to pursue the ultimate goal of an international harmonization of personal injury compensation, it is of upmost importance to define the quality requirements for the medico-legal ascertainment methodology, which are essential for guaranteeing the objectivity, rigor, and reproducibility of the data and the evidence collection procedure. Currently, there are no supra-national medico-legal guidelines dealing with the ascertainment methodology of personal injury and damage under tort and civil law.

Book excerpt: Written from the viewpoint of the practicing clinician, this text is an indispensable addition to the library of anyone who is in the practice of medicine, osteopathy, or chiropractic, as well as for the judge, lawyer, or social worker who may interact with those presenting with the possibility of malingering. Other topics discussed include Waddell’s Signs, the Pinocchio Phenomenon, the Othello Error, the Menace Reflex, the Reliable Digit Span, Lombard’s Test, the Babinski Sign of the Eyebrow, the Hummel Double Conversation Test, the Swinging Story Test, the Judd-Persaud Test, the Teal Test, the Chimani-Moos Test, the Occlusion Effect, the Drop Arm Test, the Drop Leg Test, the Honest Palm Sign, the Elbow-Flex-Ex Sign, Beevor's Sign, Schober's Test, the Babinski Trunk-Thigh Test, and the Barré Test. Advance praise for Neurological Malingering "Dr. Hirsch’s book is long overdue and covers a critical topic of concern to all medical practitioners. This comprehensive treatise is a must for all physicians, psychologists, and others who work with patients who have incentive to gain from the system. Multiple topics related to malingering are presented in 16 straightforward chapters never before compiled in a single volume. I recommend this book highly to anyone concerned about malingering and its impact on the medical system." - Richard L. Doty, PhD, FAAN, Professor and Director, Smell and Taste Center, Perelman School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania "Malingering affects not only the malingerers, but the persons and institutions around them as well. As a lay person, the readings have certainly made me considerably more sensitive to suspect behavior. And where knowledge of the underlying condition can affect relationships or transactions one is associated with, it is certainly useful to not only recognize its existence, but also to put it within the context of the challenges that it presents to those relationships or transactions. I count the time spent reading this most comprehensive work as well spent. I would further recommend it to others whose interests, decisions and/or professional pursuits could very well be affected by malingering, whether the behavior is or is not purposeful." - Judge Stephen A. Schiller (Retired), Circuit Court of Cook County, Illinois

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a solid basis to understand two centuries of bodily measurement practices and their scientific and political scope throughout the Western world. By exploring various cases, it proposes a new approach of measurement from an epistemological point of view and demonstrates the central role of the measurement of the body for political purposes. By studying categorizations of race, age and quality of life between the 19th and 20th century, the first part of the book highlights how human body measurements extend from the flesh to subjective experience. The second part shows how genomic correction and life support technologies reshape the frontiers between things, humans and social subjects. The final part reveals how contemporary measurements of age, race and disease gave rise to new hierarchies between human beings and social groups. The book concludes by considering different styles of measuring the body and their ontological consequences.
