Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited collection provides an understanding of the range of learning that is enabled by trade unions, and the agendas around that learning. It comes at an important time as, in the UK, recent years have seen significant new opportunities for unions' involvement in the government's learning and skills policy. At the same time, trade unions have had to cope with declining membership and changing employment patterns, and thus have a keen interest in defining their role in contemporary employment relations and in pursuing strategies for union renewal. Therefore, in order to explore these dynamics, a strong feature of the book is its drawing together of informed, research-based contributions from the fields of training, skills and education, and of industrial relations. International and historical perspectives are included in order to better understand the contemporary issues. There are important conclusions for policy-makers, practitioners and researchers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Trade unions have historically been involved in education and training in the workplace. This activity has gained greater credence and importance in the United Kingdom, New Zealand and Denmark due to the recent emergence of union learning representatives (ULRs) and Educational Ambassadors, who are a new category of trained, accredited and unpaid lay representatives based in the workplace. Their key role is to give advice and guidance to colleagues in relation to professional development, learning and training opportunities available. These representatives work in partnership with other stakeholders, namely employers and education providers to ensure that individuals can attend educational and training courses that will help them from both a personal and work perspective. There are now 22,000 ULRs in the UK alone and they are playing a significant part in pushing the present Labour administration’s drive to expand and improve lifelong learning to create a learning society that benefits individuals, organisations and ultimately the nation and its economy. They have rewritten the rules of the workplace by helping to replace distrust and adversarial relations with partnership working based on mutual respect and trust. This book was published as a special issue of the Journal of In-Service Education.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study was undertaken to identify the training needs of full-time officers of trade unions in the United Kingdom. Data were collected through the following methods: individual interviews with senior officers of the Transport and General Workers' Union (TGWU) and other trade unions; a questionnaire mailed to every national, regional, and district officer of the TGWU; group interviews with new district officers attending a TGWU national course for officers; interviews with representatives of the TGWU Officers' National Committee; a literature search; and a content analysis of existing training and education provided for trade union officers. Based on the findings, a three-stage model for officer training was proposed. Stage 1 consists of preparatory measures, including formal commitment to training for officers, discussions between interview panels and officers, sessions to encourage more women candidates, national and regional preparation, and development of an officers' handbook. Stage 2 includes both regional and national induction. Regional induction consists of briefings on the role of the officer, introduction to district office procedures, a program of visits and observation, and introduction to the officer training program. National induction should be a mandatory 1-week residential course that covers the role of the officer, office management, law and tribunals, and communicating. Stage 3 consists of continuing education and updating and includes an assessment of training needs and general progress (after 9 months in post), attendance at national courses, and regional courses, and preretirement education. (Includes 32 references and appendices detailing current officer training and summarizing survey responses.) (CML)

Book excerpt: Trade Unions and Workplace Training examines the changing role of trade unions in the provision of vocational education, workplace training and skill development. It reflects upon: the role that unions have played in the reform of vocational education and training systems; the nature of union involvement in consultative mechanisms at a national and industry level; the nature of union involvement in skill formation at the workplace; and the development of mechanisms for the articulation of employee voice in the design, delivery and assessment of vocational training. The book provides a collection of studies of Canada, Australia, United States, United Kingdom, France, Germany and Norway by leading researchers in the field. Distinctive, accessible and original, all the chapters are written in a style that illustrates the relevance of academic debates and research data to practice and the book includes a number of the chapters written by trade union practitioners.
