Book excerpt: This report documents results of a research project entitled Future Individual Training Strategies. The overall project objectives are to identify and assess alternative training strategies that may be more efficient and affordable than current techniques for conducting Army individual training, with special attention given to resident training conducted in U.S. Army schools. Here the authors present results of one of three case studies of specialized skill training in an Army military specialty. Each case study examines current job requirements and training approaches, identifies alternative methods of conducting training consistent with new Army training concepts, and analyzes resources, costs, and potential consequences of changes in training strategy.

Book excerpt: Using the Armor Officer Advanced Course (AOAC) as a case study, this report identifies alternative approaches for individual training and analyzes their cost implications. The study shows that 5 percent of the material in the AOAC is unrelated to job performance and could be considered for elimination from resident training. The study also finds that distributed training can provide some savings; however, its potential is limited because the amount of the distributable material is smaller than initial expectations-on the order of 25 percent, not the 40 to 60 percent called for in initial planning. Cost savings from distributed training depend on the mix of training media and technologies to conduct it (the higher tech the mix, the greater the start-up costs and the smaller the recurring savings) and on whether sufficient capacity exists to conduct it at soldiers' home stations. Ultimately, the study argues for a modest role for distributed training, involving in-place technologies such as paper, videotape, and personal computers, and only as much material as can be absorbed by soldiers and field units without interfering with daily operations and readiness.

Book excerpt: "New command, control, and communication technologies will affect soldier training requirements. Emerging training requirements for Army leaders include: (a) competency on a wider variety of tasks, (b) the ability to exploit the capabilities of new technologies, and (c) a clear understanding of digital tactics, techniques, and procedures. The current effort, Simulation-Based Multiechelon Training Program for Armor Units - Digital (SIMUTA-D), contributes a first step toward solving some of the key training challenges faced by Force XXI. The SIMUTA-D program features Movement to Contact, Deliberate Attack, and Defense in Sector training support packages which support execution-focused, battalion task force staff training for the digitally-equipped battlefield. This orientation guide provides the training unit with sufficient information to prepare to conduct training for the digital battlefield in a virtual (SIMulation Networking SIMNET) or constructive (Janus) environment. In addition, it serves as a quick reference that briefly describes the essential duties and responsibilities of the training unit and an observer/controller team."--DTIC.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Training Circular, TC 3-90.1 Armor and Rifle Company Team Collective Task Publication August 2013, is a tool commanders can use during training strategy development. The products in this TC are developed to support the company team's mission-essential task list (METL) training strategy. This TC provides guidance for commanders, staff, leaders, and Soldiers who plan, prepare, execute, and assess training of the armor and rifle company team. The primary target audience for this publication is the company commander, and other leaders within an armor and rifle company team. The secondary audience consists of training developers who develop training support materials for professional military education (PME). This publication applies to the Active Army, the Army National Guard (ARNG), Army National Guard of the United States (ARNGUS), and the United States Army Reserve (USAR) unless otherwise stated. The proponent for this publication is the U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC). Armor and Infantry rifle company teams are organized to close with the enemy by fire and maneuver to destroy, capture, or to repel the enemy's assault by fire, close combat, or counterattack. However, they are equally suited to perform stability or civil support operations independently or as part of a combined arms battalion. The company team must retain the flexibility to conduct all four types of operations: offensive, defensive, and stability or civil support simultaneously if required. Because of its mix of weaponry, personnel, and supporting elements, the company team is one of the most versatile combat assets on the modern battlefield.

This program is designed to accelerate a soldier's progression to tank commander by fostering early development of gunnery and related skills. The objectives of this research were to (1) determine if ET soldiers develop knowledge and skills beyond those of their normal track (NT) cohorts, particularly in the area of gunnery under both normal and degraded tank fire control system modes, (2) evaluate the degree of similarity between Et soldiers' and tank commanders' aptitude, interest, and temperament profiles, and (3) examine the validity of selected Armed Forces Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) and Project Alpha Predictor Battery (PAPB) scales for forecasting performance during one station unit training (OSUT). Performance measures were developed to reflect the areas emphasized by the ET program of instruction (POI), the NT POI, and aspects common to both POIs. These measures were administered to 83 ET soldiers and 83 NT soldiers matched on cognitive and psychomotor abilities. ASVAB and Project A predictor battery (PAPB) performance data were gathered for these soldiers and 41 Noncommissioned Officers (NCOs). On computerized armor training-device-based measures of gunnery performance, ET soldiers were more accurate and made fewer system management errors than did NT soldiers. (sdw).

Book excerpt: A critical issue in planning military training is in estimating the requirements for initial and refresher training, The present research investigated the learning and retention of a subset of eight armor tasks selected to represent tasks that vary in length, complexity, and extent of practice in operational units. Two data collections were conducted. One collected performance data from soldiers in operational units; the other utilized soldiers attending One Station Unit Training (OSUT) in Armor Military Occupational Specialty (19E). Soldiers in the operational unit sample had been out of OSUT entry training for up to 72 months. The operational unit soldiers took a one-time performance test on all eight tasks. Results were consistent with previous skill retention research. Multiple regression analysis was used to predict the slopes of the retention function for each task for the combined sample. The results of the OSUT, unit, and combined samples support a representation of the skill retention curve in which a rapid decay occurs soon after training with little change in performance for samples tested later. Key words: Skill learning, Training, Armor, Retention(psychology), Army training, Armor training, Job performance, Modeling.

Book excerpt: Using the Abrams Tank Crewman One-Step Unit Training as a case study, this study identifies alternative approaches for individual training and analyzes their cost implications. It suggests that although the current course's content and length is consistent with job requirements in the initial duty assignment, more efficient training techniques can be used in resident instruction. The analysis shows that many armor-specific tasks currently taught using tanks can be taught using training aids, devices, simulators, and simulations (TADSS). In addition, the amount of computer-based training (CBT) can be increased in basic training. Expanded use of TADSS to replace training on vehicles can provide substantial savings in operating and support costs, but the level of costs and savings depends on how the devices and course changes are implemented. If new trainers and simulators must be developed and procured, savings will be cut. The study also found that savings differ across devices. Although substituting TADSS for tanks appears cost effective, the evidence for CBT is mixed.
