Book excerpt: Excerpt from Training in Problem Solving This research was supported by the Cooperative Research Program of the Office of Education, United States Department of Health, Education, and welfare. The members of this office offered, continuously, their ready help in all of the problems in which they were consulted. The completion of this research has been possible thanks to the gen arous cooperation offered by the Rev. John F. Sullivan, s.j., Principal of St. Ignatius High School, Chicago, Illinois, and by the authorities of the undergraduate division of Loyola University, Chicago, Illinois. They made the scholastic records of the students used as subjects available to us and facilitated our work. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A unique collection of competition problems from over twenty major national and international mathematical competitions for high school students. Written for trainers and participants of contests of all levels up to the highest level, this will appeal to high school teachers conducting a mathematics club who need a range of simple to complex problems and to those instructors wishing to pose a "problem of the week", thus bringing a creative atmosphere into the classrooms. Equally, this is a must-have for individuals interested in solving difficult and challenging problems. Each chapter starts with typical examples illustrating the central concepts and is followed by a number of carefully selected problems and their solutions. Most of the solutions are complete, but some merely point to the road leading to the final solution. In addition to being a valuable resource of mathematical problems and solution strategies, this is the most complete training book on the market.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Problem Course in Chemistry The object has been not to set an arbitrary standard for other teachers to follow, but to compile such a set of problems as will meet the needs of the individual teacher and the in dividual student. In the interest of variety and thoroughness, more than six hundred problems are furnished, although the authors have found in their own classes that one hundred and fifty of these exercises, related to the laboratory and text-k material, provide a satisfactorily balanced year's work. The fundamental principles essential to an intelligent under standing of the calculations are presented in a clear and simple manner. Emphasis is laid upon the fact that all relationships in chemistry are quantitative, and means are provided for the solution of problems commonly met in general chemistry. It has been deemed advisable to call attention to the typical and characteristic reactions of the chemistry of the home, of the laboratory, and of industry. The data provided in the tables have been collected from standard works of reference. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. There is perhaps a natural tendency in a Christian country for people to confuse and confound the terms "religious" and "Christian," but the words are not synonymous. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Course of Pure Mathematics I have endeavoured to make Chapter IV one of the principal features of the book. The notion of a limit is one that has always presented grave difficulties to mathematical students even of great ability. It has been my good fortune during the last eight or nine years to have a share in the teaching of a good many of the ablest candidates for the Mathematical Tripos; and it is very rarely indeed that I have encountered a pupil who could face the simplest problem involving the ideas of infinity, limit, or continuity, with a vestige of the confidence with which he would deal with questions of a different character and of far greater intrinsic difficulty. I have indeed in an examination asked a dozen candidates, including several future Senior Wranglers, to sum the series 1 +m+m2+ and not received a single answer that was not practically worthless - and this from men quite capable of solving difficult problems connected with the curvature and torsion of twisted curves. I cannot believe that this is due solely to the nature of the subject. There are difficulties in these ideas, no doubt: but they are not so great as many other difficulties inherent in mathematics that every young mathematician completely overcomes. The fault is not that of the subject or of the student, but of the text-book and the teacher. It is not enough for the latter, if he wishes to drive sound ideas on these points well into the mind of his pupils. Book excerpt: THE KEY TO DISCIPLINE IS NOT PUNISHMENT, BUT MUTUAL RESPECT All parents try to do their best--but the best of intentions don't always produce the best results. Dr. Jane Nelsen, an experienced psychologist, educator, and mother, believes that children misbehave when they feel thwarted in their need to belong and in their need for love and attention. An authoritative approach, using phrases like " Because I said so!" , will only lead to rebellious behavior. Instead, parents need basic principles that bring them and their children closer. They need Positive Discipline. Dr. Nelsen explains that parents who use kindness and firmness to teach life skills will encourage self-respect, self-discipline, cooperation, good behavior, and problem-solving skills in their children. In Positive Discipline, revised and updated for the '90s, she shows all of us, parents and teachers alike, exactly how her practical program works--answering, step-by-step, such important questions as: *What works better than punishment to teach children positive, good behavior? *What mistakes do most parents make " in the name of love" ? *How can parents turn their mistakes into assets? *How can praise be dangerous? *What are the dangers of trying to be " Super Mom" ? *How can teachers avoid discipline problems in the classroom? " It is positive! It works! It saves your sanity! And it is easy to share with others." --Julie Pope, Parent Sacramento, CA " As a parent and psychotherapist, I have found enormous value and practical wisdom in Positive Discipline. It conveys a win/win atmosphere for parents and children. The techniques are so easy tolearn and fun to use...Anyone following these concepts will see almost instant results and big smiles on the faces of their children." --Katherine Dusay, Psychotherapist San Francisco, CA

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since it was first published almost twenty years ago, Developing Technical Training has been a reliable resource for both new and seasoned training specialists. The third edition of this classic book outlines a systematic approach called the Instructional Systems Design (ISD) process that shows how to teach technical content defined as facts, concepts, processes, procedures, and principles. Whether you teach “hard” or “soft” skills, or design lessons for workbooks or computers, you will find the best training methods in this book. Using these techniques, you can create learning environments that will lead to the most efficient and effective acquisition of new knowledge and skills. Throughout the book, Clark defines each content type and illustrates how to implement the best instructional methods for delivery in either print or e-learning media.
