Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report is a follow up project to the one conducted by Prince, Nanton & Arroba (1994) into the training of local authority health and safety enforcement officers. The report considers the background to enforcement functions generally, and health and safety in particular, at national and local levels, and considers the pressures prevailing on enforcement officers. It also describes general training models drawn from the academic literatures on training. Using a semi-structured interview method, interviews were conducted in nine separate local authority Environmental Health Departments, or their equivalents, at a regional local authority employer's organization, and at one of the main HSE offices. Interviews were also conducted with two academic training models, the existing training practices within HSE and the local authority EHDs were evaluated. The findings suggest that the overall training within EHDs is conducted in a fragmentary manner, lacking co-ordination and integration.

Book excerpt: Up to now there has been no single publication drawing together the main health and safety legislation and enforcement methods available to local authorities. This new book seeks to fill that gap. It is a practical guide for health and safety practitioners in local government that deals with the main elements of enforcement they are likely to encounter. The book starts by providing details of common law decisions which influence the courts in criminal proceedings under health and safety legislation.Chapters on enforcement and prosecution contain a wealth of practical advice on the procedures and practicalities of preparing for and taking action to deal with breaches of health and safety law.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite many advances, 20 American workers die each day as a result of occupational injuries. And occupational safety and health (OSH) is becoming even more complex as workers move away from the long-term, fixed-site, employer relationship. This book looks at worker safety in the changing workplace and the challenge of ensuring a supply of top-notch OSH professionals. Recommendations are addressed to federal and state agencies, OSH organizations, educational institutions, employers, unions, and other stakeholders. The committee reviews trends in workforce demographics, the nature of work in the information age, globalization of work, and the revolution in health care deliveryâ€"exploring the implications for OSH education and training in the decade ahead. The core professions of OSH (occupational safety, industrial hygiene, and occupational medicine and nursing) and key related roles (employee assistance professional, ergonomist, and occupational health psychologist) are profiled-how many people are in the field, where they work, and what they do. The book reviews in detail the education, training, and education grants available to OSH professionals from public and private sources.
