Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1917 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER II Who Should Begin--When, And How I. Who Should Begin If the reader is impressed with the sentiment in the closing words of the preceding chapter, he then possesses one of the requisites of a Life Insurance agent. It is folly to engage in the work without a pulling at the heart-strings because of the great human side of the business, and unless there is a thorough understanding and appreciation of Life Insurance, as a world force, in its economic and beneficent relation to humanity. Too many young men waste time " feeling out" other people in choosing a vocation. If the advice of someone else is going to be taken on selecting a vocation, keep out of Life Insurance, because it has enough failures aboard already. It takes a little clear grit to break into the Life Insurance profession--it is no place for a molly-coddle. Then, in seeking the opinion of others, much misinformation is acquired, as there are many individuals, glib of tongue but void of understanding, who scoff at the business as a vocation. Self-analysis should be used liberally, in selecting one's life work, as to disposition and capabilities. However, many persons carry self-analysis and inquiry beyond the necessary limits of reason. By the same token that a person can do some one thing successfully, he can do some other thing creditably, with the application of the same amount of energy and enterprise. It is not the intention to convey the idea that a good blacksmith would make a painter of works of art, and so on, but, outside the fine arts and major professions, the rule laid down does apply. Life Insurance, as a vocation, is properly classed in a twilight zone between a profession and ordinary business, embracing, as it does, the attributes and opportunities of...

If in doubt, go into the infant class and learn your A. B. C's. But it may be objected that the agent is a salesman and not a schoolteacher, and that too much learning may divert his at tention from his legitimate business. And so it will if he uses his knowledge injudiciously. His province is not to train actu aries or manufacture experts, but to sell insurance. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life Insurance: A d104book The preparation of this text was undertaken at the sug gestion of the National Association of Life Underwriters. In making the suggestion, the Association was actuated by the desire fora comprehensive textbook adapted to the needs of classroom instruction for beginners of the study of life insurance in colleges and high schools; one which would also serve as a clear and simple exposition of the subject for laymen and life insurance solicitors. To fulfill this purpose it has been the author's object to bring together in com pact and classified form the essential facts, principles and practices of the life-insurance business, and to present them in a simple and untechnical manner. The book does not at tempt to discuss the highly technical aspects of the business, such as the specialist may desire; instead its purpose is to treat comprehensively those phases concerning which the average student, layman and solicitor should be informed in order to have a clear understanding of the nature of life insurance and the family, personal and business uses to which it may be put. The thirty-two chapters of the text have been grouped into five distinct parts, dealing respectively with the Nature and Uses of Life Insurance, the Science of Life Insurance. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Efficiency: Practical Lesson in Life Insurance Salesmanship The greater part of this book is reproduced without change. Communications from numerous readers indicate that it precisely fills the require ments of the average life insurance agent. In the section referring to Endowment Insurance, an im portant addition has been made by the explanation of the method of conversion from Endowment to the greatest available amount of Straight Life Insurance. This is a change which policyholders would often be glad to make if they were aware of the possibility. A chapter has been added upon a subject of the utmost importance to all salesmen. It shows the reasons why so many do not write a greater amount of business, and offers particular sug gestions for improvement in this direction.
