In the warm months, as the sun sets, there is an alpine glow, which makes the mountain appear pink. Skiing is almost 365 days a year. That is, until a murder so appalling is discovered by a hiker and a Forest Service employee. This was not the first murder of its kind, and it wont be the last. Across the mountain, a web of murder and mystery is woven that entangles all that get too close to the . . . Trail Stalker

Book excerpt: From the author of the bestseller Eat and Run, a thrilling memoir about his grueling, exhilarating, and immensely inspiring 46-day run to break the speed record for the Appalachian Trail. Scott Jurek is one of the world's best known and most beloved ultrarunners. Renowned for his remarkable endurance and speed, accomplished on a vegan diet, he's finished first in nearly all of ultrarunning's elite events over the course of his career. But after two decades of racing, training, speaking, and touring, Jurek felt an urgent need to discover something new about himself. He embarked on a wholly unique challenge, one that would force him to grow as a person and as an athlete: breaking the speed record for the Appalachian Trail. North is the story of the 2,189-mile journey that nearly shattered him. When he set out in the spring of 2015, Jurek anticipated punishing terrain, forbidding weather, and inevitable injuries. He would have to run nearly 50 miles a day, every day, for almost seven weeks. He knew he would be pushing himself to the limit, that comfort and rest would be in short supply -- but he couldn't have imagined the physical and emotional toll the trip would exact, nor the rewards it would offer. With his wife, Jenny, friends, and the kindness of strangers supporting him, Jurek ran, hiked, and stumbled his way north, one white blaze at a time. A stunning narrative of perseverance and personal transformation, North is a portrait of a man stripped bare on the most demanding and transcendent effort of his life. It will inspire runners and non-runners alike to keep striving for their personal best.

Book excerpt: “Excellence and care guide every quiet step Mark Warren makes; to follow him teaches unique, wonderful truths about one’s connection to the Earth and its inhabitants. “ –Rhyse Bendell, Medicine Bow summer camper and student “Mark leads the modern reader along the almost forgotten paths of wood lore, natural medicine, and self-sufficiency. “ –Emily Ghiz, baker and Montessori teacher In this third volume of the “Secrets of the Forest” series, outdoor educator Mark Warren opens the door to experiences with wildlife such as: · how to stalk animals of the wild without being detected by their keen senses. This discipline addresses posture, clothing, diet, de-scenting, and “soft-walking,” the ultra-slow-motion technique that falls below the radar of wildlife’s peripheral vision. · how to read individual tracks and multiple gaits of specific animal species. · how to convert animal skins into rawhide and leather for crafts and clothing. · how to differentiate species of snakes and, in the process, demystify their often misunderstood intentions. The second half of the book is dedicated to games. Its main purpose is to ensure that young ones (under an adult leader) simply have fun on an outing and will want to return to nature for another adventure. Some of these games come from Native American traditions, but many are new and range from “high-action” to “pensive around the campfire” kinds of activities. This volume contains more than one hundred fifty original adventures.

Book excerpt: A Sniper's Story A sniper using the jungle to conceal his intentions becomes the hunter that can strike at his calling with swift and deadly force. BACK COVER As the morning sun rises high in the sky, the heavy dew begins to burn off, creating a layer of fog in the jungle. The humidity is at its maximum, and the sweat starts to run down my forehead, trickling over my eye and then to my nose before dripping off. I lay motionless, watching for any movement. I listen carefully, separating the noises of the jungle from any unnatural movements. I hold my breath and listen, then breathe again softly. A group of macaque monkeys noisily climb the trees and begin to greedily eat some fruit. The jungle residents are getting down to what might be called their morning routine. I take a drink from my canteen and hear a snapping sound from my right quarter. I strain to see through the vines and spot someone moving in my direction. Several soldiers come into sight; this looks like a Viet Cong (VC) recon patrol. I make sure my cover is good and move my rifle into position. Looking through the scope, I watch the first figure come into sharp focus. I remove the safety and take a calming breath. The lead soldier hesitates and whispers something to the man behind him, who signals the others to stop. They have heard the monkeys rummaging about, and after a long pause, the lead soldier seems satisfied and continues to move forward. Like the jungle tiger, I will wait for the prey to come to me and then swiftly strike with a deadly force!
