Book excerpt: In this second edition of his classic work, Joel Savishinsky expands and updates his highly acclaimed study of mobility and stress in a sub-Arctic community of Hare Indians. Since the publication of the first edition, the Hare have faced new challenges posed by clashes between aboriginal and contemporary values in the spheres of ecology, culture and politics - from the Hare's rising ethnic and political awareness as a "Fourth World" community to cultural disagreements over animal rights and environmental preservation. The second edition reframes the context of Savishinsky's original conclusions on human-animal relations, environmentalism and native-white encounters to accommodate these new developments as well as current trends in anthropology itself.

Book excerpt: A beautiful and intelligent little girl rabbit named Bunny, and a rugged but compassionate boy hare named Hare, go hiking together after being introduced by a mutual friend. From that point on, their exciting adventures begin, in the mountains, on the prairie, and at the ocean. The stories in The Adventures of Bunny and Hare describe their different experiences and the joy of sharing those experiences. Bunny and Hare make many animal friends during their journeys. They help other animals with their problems, and other animals help Bunny and Hare. Together, they face problems that arise and resolve them by working together. Each story has a message about the good and bad things in life, and evolves through ever more challenging situations to a surprise ending. Mr. Brackett has been writing for over 35 years. He is the author of several technical books and numerous technical articles on data management. In 2008 he wrote Notes From The Back Of The Clipboard: Anecdotes From Real Life (eloquentbooks.com) describing a variety of anecdotes about experiences in his life and the lessons he learned from those experiences. The Adventures of Bunny and Hare is his first children's book. Mr. Brackett enjoys hiking in the back country, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, rollerblading, and western dancing. He retired three times and is still active in a variety of community activities. He still thrives on the challenges that are just around the next corner. He lives in the log home that he built in the Olympic Mountains near Lilliwaup, Washington. Publisher's website: http: //www.strategicpublishinggroup.com/title/TheAdventuresOfBunnyAndHare.html

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No other nonhuman source has served as the basis for more metaphors than animals. Speaking of Animals is a dictionary of animal metaphors that are current in American English. It is comprehensive, historical, and metaphor-based. Each entry refers to the other dictionaries that catalog that same metaphor, and the dates of first appearance in writing are supplied, where possible, for both the metaphor and the name of the source. The main text is organized alphabetically by metaphor rather than by animal or animal behavior; all the metaphors are classified according to their animal source in a list at the end of the book. An animal metaphor is a word, phrase, or sentence that expresses a resemblance or similarity between someone or something and a particular animal or animal class. True metaphors are single words, such as the noun tiger, the verb hog, and the adjective chicken. Phrasal metaphors combine true metaphors with other words, such as blind tiger, hog the road, and chicken colonel. Other animal metaphors take the form of similes, such as like rats leaving a sinking ship and prickly as a hedgehog. Still others take the form of proverbs, such as Don't count your chickens before they hatch and Let sleeping dogs lie. The horse is the animal most frequently referred to in metaphors, followed closely by the dog. The Bible is the most prolific literary source of animal metaphors, followed closely by Shakespeare.

These creatures have a world full of natural predators, but they also have an arsenal of ways to defend themselves. In this book, Tregarthen, in fact, paints a picture of the life of a hare at a time when humans were not on the list of dangers to hares. This charming tale is a heartwarming story of a world where hares can roam freely.
