This book was released on 2009-11 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since 1995, approx. 40,000 Burmese refugees have resettled in the U.S., fleeing the repressive military junta in Burma. The majority of refugee arrivals come via Bangkok, Thailand or Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. In 2008 there was a review of allegations about mistreatment of Burmese refugees enroute to the U.S. -- specifically, that they were victims of extortion and human trafficking in Malaysia and Thailand. These findings are from research in Malaysia, Thailand and the U.S., as well as info. obtained from other countries. The report examines a specific and narrow component of a broader regional issue, namely, the ongoing migrant and refugee crisis throughout ASEAN which calls for the establishment of a comprehensive regional policy.

Book Synopsis Perilous Plight by : David Mathieson
Download or read book Perilous Plight written by David Mathieson and published by Human Rights Watch. This book was released on 2009 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In early 2009, thousands of ethnic Rohingya Muslims from Burma and Bangladesh made perilous journeys by sea to southern Thailand and Indonesia. Scores are feared to have died as a result of Thailand's "push-back" policy: towing Rohingyas back out to sea to deter further arrivals. This report examines the causes of the exodus of Rohingya people from Burma and Bangladesh and their treatment once in flight. Repression and human rights violations continue against the Rohingya inside Burma, exacerbated by a draconian citizenship law that renders them stateless. Decades of mistreatment have pushed many to flee to neighboring Bangladesh. From there, many pay to be smuggled to Malaysia via other Southeast Asian countries. Because they lack official papers, they live in fear of arrest and possible repatriation to Burma.
Download or read book Urban Refugees written by Koichi Koizumi and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-04-10 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Urban refugees now account for over half the total number of refugees worldwide. Yet to date, far more research has been done on refugees living in camps and settlements set up expressly for them. This book provides crucial insights into the worldwide phenomenon of refugee flows into urban settings, repercussions for those seeking protection, and the agencies and organizations tasked to assist them. It provides a comparative exploration of refugees and asylum seekers in nine urban areas in Africa, Asia and Europe to examine issues such as status recognition, international and national actors, housing, education and integration. The book explores the relationship between refugee policies of international organisations and national governments and on the ground realities and demonstrates both the diverse of circumstances in which refugees live, and their struggle for recognition, protection and livelihoods.
Book Synopsis Discourse in the Digital Age by : Eleonora Esposito
Download or read book Discourse in the Digital Age written by Eleonora Esposito and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-11-30 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection makes the case for existing critical discourse analysis theory and methods to meaningfully engage with the communicative parameters, power dynamics, and technological affordances of contemporary digital spaces. This book lends a critical focus on discursive practices operating through the paradigm of social media communication, addressing the crucial interface of discourse and the participatory web with disciplinary rigour and a well-balanced focus. This volume features chapters highlighting a diverse range of methods, including multi-sited ethnography, multimodality, argumentation studies, and topic modelling, as applied to a global range of case studies to present a holistic portrait of the latest methodological and theoretical debates in this space. The collection demonstrates the many and pervasive impacts of digital mediation on established discursive practices that are (re-)shaping existing social values, practices, and demands. In so doing, the collection advocates for a new tradition in critical discourse research, one which is rigorous in accounting for both solid discursive frameworks and the evolving complexity of digital platforms, and which triangulates methodologies in order to fully make sense of contemporary discursive practices and power relations on the online–offline continuum. This collection will be of interest to students and scholars in critical discourse studies, digital communication, media studies, and anthropology.

Book Synopsis The Other Kuala Lumpur by : Yeoh Seng Guan
Download or read book The Other Kuala Lumpur written by Yeoh Seng Guan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-02-05 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kuala Lumpur, like many Southeast Asian cities, has changed very significantly in the last two or three decades – expanding its size, and 'modernising' and 'globalising' its built environment. For many people these changes represent 'progress' and 'development'. This book, however, focuses on the more marginalised residents of Kuala Lumpur. Among others, it considers street hawkers and vendors, refugees, the urban poor, religious minorities and a sexuality rights group, and explores how their everyday lives have been adversely affected by these recent changes. The book shows how urban renewal, the law and ethno-religious nationalism can work against these groups in wanting to live and work in the capital city of Malaysia.
