Book excerpt: Satellite imagery could conceivably be added to data traditionally collected in traffic monitoring programs to allow wide spatial coverage unobtainable from ground-based sensors in a safe, off-the-road environment. Previously, we estimated that 1-m resolution panchromatic imagery should allow accurate vehicle counts and rough vehicle classifications, while large vehicles might be accurately detected with only 4-m resolution. At least three private groups are planning to market such high-resolution satellite data in the near future, but several issues must be addressed before these data could be used to complement traffic monitoring programs. This report addresses the following issues: demonstrating that vehicles can be identified and classified accurately from satellite imagery; developing efficient image processing methods; and determining methods to integrate the imagery with ground-based data and assessing the value of this integration.

Book excerpt: Also, the performance of the model was significantly better on identifying signal crosswalks (92.5%) and uncontrolled major road crossings (96.6%) regardless of zebra or non-zebra pavement markings. The final results revealed that there are 861 mid-block, 30,784 signal, and 29,307 driveway crosswalks on the state roads in Florida. The proposed framework can be adapted in other locations where the appropriate imagery and vector data are available and is expected to contribute on the wider use of machine learning in transport policy. Finally, the fifth case study presented the literature review and the state of the art on drone utilization for traffic monitoring with the desired traffic data while providing the background on computer vision and particularly on the Multi Object Tracking (MOT) methodology with a preliminary case study to perform a real-time object detection on webcam. The provided summary of drone utilization among the U.S. transportation agencies can help stakeholders on how to benefit from UAS technology on their day-to-day work. Moreover, uniform traffic study manuals can be updated with the presented desired data analysis to help practitioners perform drone-based traffic monitoring. Furthermore, the benchmark MOT algorithms along with their data sets and performance metrics were introduced and a case study for real-time object detection was performed to pave the way for real-time naturalistic trajectory extraction and analysis. A small program was developed using python programing language, and the code was shared to apply real-time object detection on the images extracted from users' webcam. Overall findings of this dissertation depict that regardless of the imagery data source or image processing method, a comprehensive pre-processing step should be performed with a focus on the targeted end data. In addition, satellite imagery and remote sensing methods powered by GIS, provide free and exhaustive data that can be used for smarter cities. Deep learning methods have extensive power over image data; in fact, some models for certain tasks have already surpassed human performance. However, it requires serious understanding to convert commonly known neural network models to perform slightly different tasks than what they were initially trained for. Tethered drones have also been promising solutions to collect continuous and automated traffic data. However, there is a trade off since the operation is too sensitive to weather events such as wind.

The study was designed for three sites in Columbus, Ohio. Ground count data collection was coordinated to an aerial photography mission. The aircraft data were processed to simulate 1-m resolution satellite data. Specific objectives of the research included: 1) process aerial photographs; 2) use the imagery to count and classify vehicles on highway segments; 3) determine traffic measures from the imagery and ground-based data; and, 4) compare the aerial-based and ground-based traffic measures.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces the concepts of mobility data and data-driven urban traffic monitoring. A typical framework of mobility data-based urban traffic monitoring is also presented, and it describes the processes of mobility data collection, data processing, traffic modelling, and some practical issues of applying the models for urban traffic monitoring. This book presents three novel mobility data-driven urban traffic monitoring approaches. First, to attack the challenge of mobility data sparsity, the authors propose a compressive sensing-based urban traffic monitoring approach. This solution mines the traffic correlation at the road network scale and exploits the compressive sensing theory to recover traffic conditions of the whole road network from sparse traffic samplings. Second, the authors have compared the traffic estimation performances between linear and nonlinear traffic correlation models and proposed a dynamical non-linear traffic correlation modelling-based urban traffic monitoring approach. To address the challenge of involved huge computation overheads, the approach adapts the traffic modelling and estimations tasks to Apache Spark, a popular parallel computing framework. Third, in addition to mobility data collected by the public transit systems, the authors present a crowdsensing-based urban traffic monitoring approach. The proposal exploits the lightweight mobility data collected from participatory bus riders to recover traffic statuses through careful data processing and analysis. Last but not the least, the book points out some future research directions, which can further improve the accuracy and efficiency of mobility data-driven urban traffic monitoring at large scale. This book targets researchers, computer scientists, and engineers, who are interested in the research areas of intelligent transportation systems (ITS), urban computing, big data analytic, and Internet of Things (IoT). Advanced level students studying these topics benefit from this book as well.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the key milestones of radar remote sensing for civil applications was the launch of the European Remote Sensing Satellite 1 (ERS 1) in 1991. The platform carried a variety of sensors; the Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) is widely cons- ered to be the most important. This active sensing technique provides all-day and all-weather mapping capability of considerably ?ne spatial resolution. ERS 1 and its sister system ERS 2 (launch 1995) were primarily designed for ocean app- cations, but soon the focus of attention turned to onshore mapping. Examples for typical applications are land cover classi?cation also in tropical zones and mo- toring of glaciers or urban growth. In parallel, international Space Shuttle Missions dedicated to radar remote sensing were conducted starting already in the 1980s. The most prominent were the SIR-C/X-SAR mission focussing on the investigation of multi-frequency and multi-polarization SAR data and the famous Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM). Data acquired during the latter enabled to derive a DEM of almost global coverage by means of SAR Interferometry. It is indispe- ableeventodayandformanyregionsthebestelevationmodelavailable. Differential SAR Interferometry based on time series of imagery of the ERS satellites and their successor Envisat became an important and unique technique for surface defor- tion monitoring. The spatial resolution of those devices is in the order of some tens of meters.

Position information can be computed and displayed at a traffic control center, and be transmitted to the users, together with traffic and hazard advisories, weather reports, and other messages. The system would also enable the user to compute his position independently on board. Digital communications at a rate of approximately 600 pps would be employed, while voice and high data rate digital communications can be accommodated at the cost of increased satellite ERP.
