Book excerpt: From being characterized as ‘primitive tribe’ in the colonial imagination to become predominantly practitioners of the American Baptist faith, the Sumi Naga – formerly known as the Sema Naga – in the North-East Indian state of Nagaland have come a long way ever since this Naga tribe encountered the white man toward the latter half of the nineteenth century. This book in a way chronicles the transition of Sumi society from the period of colonial contact up to the present-day context. A critical understanding of Sumi society and culture is at the heart of the narrative, and the analysis of Sumi religion and world view remains the main thrust of this book. It is argued that the Sumi, who are overwhelmingly Baptists, are faced with new religious issues which has brought about not only schismatic divisions but also rendering ebullience to religious life, and that a new discourse has emerged in Sumi religion. The author positions himself as an ‘insider’, and in doing so has given a reflexive account of Sumi religious life, meanwhile substantiating the arguments and findings in the light of contemporary theoretical developments. Book excerpt: The title of this book 'Nagas in the 21st Century' is both an adaptation and a (modest) self-proclaimed sequel to Verrier Elwin's (1969) iconic Nagas in the Nineteenth Century. In this anthology, Elwin introduces and brings together a collection of administrative reports, tour diaries, and ethnographic descriptions on Naga tribes, all written in the 19th century. During the colonial era Naga tribes turned into an ethnological hotbed, even a cradle of British social anthropology. Back then, writings on Nagas were many, varied and colourful, and included rituals and religion, political structures and sentiments, taboos and omens, dress and ornaments, funeral customs, head-hunting, monolithic cultures, and so on. This ubiquity of colonial accounts, however, contrasts starkly with the scant material generated during the post-colonial period. In fact, as a corollary of the protracted Indo-Naga conflict scholars working on Nagas now grapple with a decades-wide ethnographic void. This, however, is now starting to change. The contributors to this book take Elwin's anthology, or other colonial sources, as a point of reference, and then link these texts to their own areas of research offering critiques, comparisons, and contrasts as they proceed. A number of Naga tribes are the subject of essays which address various aspects of contemporary Naga society including Naga identity; the Naga 'village republic'; transition in traditional governance; the significance of dreams; the effects of Christian conversion; the Hornbill Festival; a Naga understanding of the head-hunting culture; Naga nationalist politics; festival continuity and change and post-conflict society. As a group, dynamic culture is adopted, changed and learned. Every culture of the world has its own charms and the Sangtam Culture is one, which is enchanting with its multifarious hue, beauty and richness. However, there is no systematic documentation of the Sangtam Cultural Heritage till today. In addition, the degree of disappearance is found to be very high due to various reasons. All these are discussed in this book.During our forefather's time, the Sangtams maintained the communitarian values among the people in the community. The community shared love, peace, helping, equality, unity and co-operation etc. But with the coming of western education, modernization, science and technology which mould the society not only in educating but in western tradition, lifestyle, dress code, mass media, easy and comfort life. Which lead the community of Sangtam Naga to decline the communitarian values in the community. After the coming of Christianity, the Sangtam people could not hold both Christian Cultures along with their traditional values systems any longer. It is true, that the Naga traditional belief and practices could not hold the influences of Christianity. As a result, a total change was brought to their society due to impact of Christianity within a short period of time. The common origin, migration and settlement of the Sangtam Nagas, their history, society, culture and common way of life may attract any sincere researchers, writers and scholars. Their folk tales, folk songs, dance and ceremonies, arts, dress, ornaments, institutions etc, speak about the beautiful Sangtam society and culture. The traditional institutes like Murong (Roshengvi), Vil¬lage Khel, Village elders and use of Logdrum (Singkong) etc., and their philosophical meaning and usage are extremely valu-able. The Britishers and the American Missionaries were amazed to see all these kinds of Naga Culture and society when they entered into Naga territory. The main objective of writing and research about this book is to examine the features of the Sangtam society and culture from ancient to contemporary. For this purpose, the Sangtam culture, society and their value systems was selected as a case study.This beautiful hill people's culture is gradually disappearing. As a result, the youngsters are not concerned much about their own culture and customs. For this purpose, writing of such documentation was considered the need of the hour.
