Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We investigate the joint dynamics of returns and trading volume of 556 foreign stocks cross-listed on U.S. markets. Heterogeneous-agent trading models rationalize how trading volume reflects the quality of traders' information signals and how it helps to disentangle whether returns are associated with portfolio-rebalancing trades or information-motivated trades. Based on these models, we hypothesize that returns in the home (U.S.) market on high-volume days are more likely to continue to spill over into the U.S. (home) market for those cross-listed stocks subject to the risk of greater informed trading. Our empirical evidence provides support for these predictions, which confirms the link between information, trading volume, and international stock return comovements that has eluded previous empirical investigations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together a collection of papers on international trade and international finance, instead of treating the two as disjoint fields of study. The volume, while focusing on the recent developments and frontiers of research in international trade and international finance, also emphasizes the inherent integrated nature of the two subjects; some of the papers are overlapping across the two areas. A unique feature of the proposed volume is that it unravels some new issues in addition to re-examining certain old issues in a new perspective and thus covers wide ranging issues with an emphasis on policy. The book covers issues mostly relating to emerging market economies, which has increasingly assumed importance in the context of globalization. The book contains some survey papers covering the frontiers of current knowledge on important themes like recent developments in trade theory and empirics, foreign exchange market, institutions in trade and finance, interrelation and interaction between international trade and international finance. The papers, fruit of rigorous and original research, are written by internationally and nationally reputed authors along with promising young researchers on the subjects. The book substantially contributes to the growing literature on issues relating to trade and international finance in emerging market economies and extends the frontiers of knowledge. The book is expected to have the widest possible readership comprising of advanced undergraduate and graduate students as well as senior researchers working in international trade and international finance.

Book excerpt: The relationship of stock returns and trading volume is the focus of much recent interest. I examine an economic model of a rational trader who operates in a market with transactions costs and noise trading. The level of trading affects the rational trader’s marginal cost of transacting; as a result, trading volume is a source of risk. This engenders an equilibrium relationship between returns and volume. The model also provides a simple way to scrutinize this relationship empirically. Empirical evidence supports the implications of the model.

This book was released on 2008-04-15 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This timely volume addresses three important recent trends in the internationalization of United States equity markets: extensive market integration through foreign investment and links among stock prices around the world; increasing securitization as countries such as Japan come to rely more than ever before on markets in equities and bonds at the expense of banks; and the opening of national financial systems of newly industrializing countries to international financial flows and institutions, as governments remove capital controls and other barriers. Eight essays examine such issues as the current extent of international market integration, gains to U.S. investors through international diversification, home-country bias in investing, the role of time and location around the world in stock trading, and the behavior of country funds. Other, long-standing questions about equity markets are also addressed, including market efficiency and the accuracy of models of expected returns, with a particular focus on variances, covariances, and the price of risk according to the Capital Asset Pricing Model.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using intraday prices for the Samp;P 500 and Nikkei Stock Average and aggregate trading volume for the New York and Tokyo Stock Exchanges, we show how short-run comovements between national stock market returns vary over time in a way related to the trading volume and liquidity in those markets. We frame our analysis in the context of the equilibrium models of trading developed by Campbell, Grossman and Wang (1993) and Blume, Easley and O?Hara (1994) which predict that trading volume acts as a signal of the information content of a given price move. While we find that there exists significant short-run dependence in returns and volatility between Japan and the U.S., we offer new evidence that these return quot;spilloversquot; are sensitive to interactions with trading volume in both markets. The cross-market effects with volume are revealed in both close-to-open and open-to-close returns and often exhibit non-linearities which are not predicted by theory.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2006 in the subject Business economics - Investment and Finance, grade: 1,3, Anhalt University of Applied Sciences Köthen, course: International Banking ans Finance, language: English, abstract: The stock exchange market is one of the key mechanisms for attracting monetary ressources for investment, economy modernisation and stimulation of the production growth in a country. At the same time the world stock exchange markets can be a source of financial instability and even of macroeconomic and social shocks. Esspecialy volatible to economic shocks are the stock exchanges of transitional economies, such as Russia, which was characterised as a one of the most risky countries in early 90 ies. The transition of Russia from a plan to a market economy has caused increasing interest to stock exchanges as an important component of the stock market. Russian economists came to conclusion that stock exchange market is the nervous terminations of economy and of all spheres of the life of society. These nervous terminations react to the depth of the processes occuring in an organism, much earlier, than the organism itself. Therefore the stock exchange market is the lead indicator of what will occur in economy. But imperfection of the Russian legislation, absence of culture of corporate management, lacks in system of disclosing information and legal base demanding completion are the basic features of the exchange stock market in Russia. The purpose of my assigment, therefore, is to analyse the current competitive position of Russia on the world stock market, to reveal problems of modern Russian stock exchanges and to find out the reasons of their occurrence. The efficiency of the stock exchange in Russia will be assessed according to the models applied in the financial literature. In order to reach this target first we have to look at the theoretical aspects of the core essence and main functions of stock exchanges.

Book excerpt: In this book of over 200 worked examples for stock traders and investors, you will discover an approach that was used by the iconic traders of the past to build their vast fortunes. Traders such as Jesse Livermore, Richard Wyckoff and Richard Ney all succeeded because they understood the power of the tape which delivered just two key pieces of information, namely volume and price, and from which they were able to anticipate where the market was going next. This approach was also codified by Richard Wyckoff into three principle laws, and forms the basis of volume price analysis. It is a powerful methodology that can be applied to all markets, instruments and timeframes regardless of whether you are an investor, trader or speculator. The examples presented in this book are drawn primarily from US stock markets, but also includes examples taken from the futures markets, such as indices, commodities, currency futures and bonds. Each chart example is fully annotated to illustrate and highlight key points in the associated text, and together provide a detailed and comprehensive study of the volume price relationship, and giving clear signals as to where the stock is going next. And regardless of whether you are selecting stocks for growth, dividend yield, option strategies, or for speculative day trading, volume price analysis will highlight which ones to buy or sell, and when.

This book starts with the absolute basics of stock markets as a precursor to more advanced global trading methods in the next two volumes. The aim is to set out to demystify the myths about stock markets, and ultimately remove the enigma that has been bestowed on the industry. Novice traders will find sections on Wall Street rules, age-old axioms and how to avoid common pitfalls and mistakes interesting and also a warning that trading is not a game. The latter section includes an outline of portfolio management theory and practice.
