Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book looks at the introduction of economic constraint into industrial relations and examines whether a wage-driven or employment-driven industrial relations regime can be adopted or is applicable. As the term implies, the former regime produces more employment and generates a higher income for all workers in the long run while the latter obtains a wage premium for the employed at the expense of the unemployed. Furthermore, in a wage-driven industrial relations regime, the strength of the union is an important determinant of wages while there is no such contemporaneous relationship between union strength and wage increases in the employment-driven regime. The book examines the Singapore industrial relations system based on the resource-constraint approach. This book received a commendation in the 1996 Book Awards of Singapore.

Book excerpt: This book offers the detailed historical background required for a holistic appreciation of current problems faced and the possibilities for revitalisation. In two volumes it provides introductory overviews of trade union development since the end of World War II in 26 countries from every corner of the globe. Each chapter explains the main contours of trade union growth and development in one country from the pivotal year 1945 to the present. Each chapter assesses the often dynamic expansion of trade unionism in the 1950s and 1960s; the role of trade unionism in the movements for national liberation in the Global South and the erection of social welfare systems in the developed North; the economic shocks that resulted in membership decline and loss of political influence from the late 1970s onward; the economic restructuring and growing labour market diversity of the 1980s and 1990s that undercut the traditional bases of trade union membership; and the historical roots of the contemporary political and economic context in which revitalisation efforts are taking place.

Book excerpt: This book is an in-depth study of the structure and leadership of the All-China Federation of Trade Unions -- the largest mass organisation which aims at representing the interests of the labouring class in the People's Republic of China. Special attention is paid to the relations between the union system and the Party and State, to find out the circumstances and factors which affect the roles and autonomy of unions in China. While the period of analysis starts from 1949, events before 1949 are summarised at the beginning of the book so as to provide a backdrop for the research into the contemporary scene.

Book excerpt: Recent developments in the world economy, including deindustrialisation and the digital revolution, have led to an increasingly individualistic relationship between workers and employers, which in turn has weakened labour movements and worker representation. However, this process is not universal, including in some countries of Asia, where trade unions are closely aligned with the interests of the dominant political party and the state. This book considers the many challenges facing trade unions and worker representation in a wide range of Asian countries. For each country, full background is given on how trade unions and other forms of worker representation have arisen. Key questions then considered include the challenges facing trade unions and worker representation in each country, the extent to which these are a result of global or local developments and the actions being taken by trade unions and worker representative bodies to cope with the challenges. This book is dedicated to the memory of Professor Keith Thurley, London School of Economics.
