Book excerpt: This thesis designs, develops, and uses software Graphical User Interfaces (GUIs) to analyze the communications capabilities of Radio Frequency (RF) Inter-Satellite Links (ISLs). The GUIs are geared towards analyzing the proposed ISLs of the Discoverer II program, but are general enough to permit analysis of any free-space RF ISLs. Discoverer II is a demonstration program of low-earth orbiting satellites and is primarily focused on satellite-based sensor technology. This thesis shows RF ISLs can meet the program requirement to broadcast the sensor data back to CONUS in near-real-time. The GUIs operate in real-time and explore trade-offs in the communications capability by varying the requirements, parameters, and components of the system design. Three GUIs are developed. The first GUl uses parameters from an assumed satellite constellation geometry to calculate the operating range of the ISLs. The second GUl solves for an unknown parameter of the communications system when all other parameters are given. The third GUl extends the analysis capability by plotting the trade-off between two parameters over a specified range of data. The analysis of the Discoverer II ISLs indicates that antenna radius is a very significant factor in the trade-off analysis, as well as being an important satellite design parameter.

Book excerpt: In response to a request from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, the committee studied a range of issues to help identify what strategies the Department of Defense might follow to meet its need for flexible, rapidly deployable communications systems. Taking into account the military's particular requirements for security, interoperability, and other capabilities as well as the extent to which commercial technology development can be expected to support these and related needs, the book recommends systems and component research as well as organizational changes to help the DOD field state-of-the-art, cost-effective untethered communications systems. In addition to advising DARPA on where its investment in information technology for mobile wireless communications systems can have the greatest impact, the book explores the evolution of wireless technology, the often fruitful synergy between commercial and military research and development efforts, and the technical challenges still to be overcome in making the dream of "anytime, anywhere" communications a reality.

Book excerpt: This is the final report on a study of laser-based intersatellite communications links. Three links are considered: between geostationary satellites, between geostationary and inclined geosynchronous satellites, and between geostationary and low earth orbit satellites. Section 1 provides historical & technical background on laser communications systems and an outline of ongoing optical intersatellite link (ISL) development programs. Section 2 analyzes the operational parameters of the three links under study. Section 3 reviews optical ISL technology and the current or projected performance of ISL components. Link gains & losses are identified in section 4 for both direct detection & heterodyne receivers and for direct modulation laser diodes & externally modulated gas & solid state lasers. Section 5 discusses the acquisition & tracking functions that are essential before data transmission can begin. Section 6 presents the conceptual design for the baseline direct detection system operating at 100 megabytes per second and for two options at one gigabyte per second. Performance parameters are listed for the baseline system with changes indicated for the two optional systems. A telescope is selected and the optical bench dimensions are established for all three systems. An outline is presented for the electrical system which supports the communications signal and controls the system for acquisition & tracking. The final sections review Canadian capabilities in optical ISL and outline a roadmap to achieve a Canadian presence in the optical ISL market.

This book was released on 2009 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of antenna arrays to exploit spatial information in single and multi-user RF communication receivers is well established for reducing interference and enabling frequency reuse. Antenna arrays have been deployed in single satellite applications but arrays have not been exploited in multi-satellite constellations where increased array size enables high spatial selectivity between ground transmitters. One requirement for these array systems is sufficient fidelity in transporting the received RF signals at each antenna to the array processor. Optical inter-satellite link architectures for signal transport are investigated and parameterized models to compare the performance of each are synthesized. Both analog and digital modulation schemes for the link are considered. A two-channel receiver with both low and high interference is analyzed. It is shown that high resolution satellite array receivers are practical with low required optical power. The optimum selection of transport architecture is shown by selecting for lowest error probability or minimum required optical power. A satellite-to-satellite distance threshold is found for selecting the optimum inter-satellite link architecture for a given application.
