Download or read book Trade Investment and Development in the Contemporary Caribbean written by Bhoendradatt Tewarie and published by Ian Randle Publishers. This book was released on 2007 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Small open economies like those making up the countries of the Caribbean region share a number of fundamental problems of economic management which ultimately affect the entire development process. Co-authors Bhoe Tewarie and Roger Hosein use Trinidad and Tobago and the management of its energy resources as a case study to examine some of the development challenges that face countries of the region. They make the point that in spite of that country s abundant energy resources which has allowed it to grow at a comparatively rapid rate, Trinidad and Tobago, like lesser endowed CARICOM partners, has had to cope with challenges such as diversification, human development, managerial capacity and institutional weakness, all of which contributed to seven consecutive years of decline between 1983 and 1990. Not only is the availability of resources no guarantee for economic success, it also creates unique problems and in the case of Trinidad and Tobago, this is manifested in uneven development in the energy sector compared to other sectors of the economy and society. While the volume focuses on Trinidad and Tobago, there is ample discussion of a range of issues that affect the entire region extending from trade within CARICOM to globalization, open regionalism, relations with the United States, human capital formation and the role of education systems and educational policy in the development process. Tewarie and Hosein combine their talents and research in the areas of economics, culture, education, literature, trade and investment, and development generally, to produce a volume that is rich in data and insights into the development process. Book Synopsis Caribbean Trade and Integration by : Roger Hosein
Download or read book Caribbean Trade and Integration written by Roger Hosein and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Regional integration has emerged as perhaps the most controversial issue within the Caribbean. While some progress in implementing economic reforms, both at the national and regional level are observable, the efforts made by Caribbean policymakers to strengthen regional cooperation and integration have not yielded the envisioned level of economic transformation. Caribbean Trade and Integration distinguishes itself by combining history with sound economic and policy analysis. Moreover, this book reviews a survey of several key historical studies that have identified the urgent need for a change in policy action among Caribbean Community member states over time and that have outlined many pointed policy suggestions to effect the same. The book culminates by addressing the need to unpause the Caribbean Single Market and Economy and proposes a number of initiatives to generate this outcome. While this book is written to appeal to an academic audience, it also provides essential reading for policy practitioners, stakeholder groups, the CARICOM Secretariat and those interested in the dynamics of Caribbean regional integration.

Book Synopsis Latin American and Caribbean Trade Agreements by : Thomas Andrew O'Keefe
Download or read book Latin American and Caribbean Trade Agreements written by Thomas Andrew O'Keefe and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2009 with total page 517 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Latin American and Caribbean Trade Agreements: Keys to a Prosperous Community of the Americas is the essential reference guide for companies trading with Latin America and the Caribbean or wishing to use a country in the region as an export platform. This work fills the void in academic texts that are used to teach courses on economic integration in the Western Hemisphere. It provides a road map for the Obama Administration to launch an ambitious project designed to encourage economic growth, promote energy security, and reduce harmful greenhouse gas emissions, while at the same time realistically meeting the development needs of Latin America and the Caribbean. Latin American and Caribbean Trade Agreements: Keys to a Prosperous Community of the Americas posits that the myopic focus of past United States administrations on free markets to spur economic development in the Western Hemisphere is not enough. A bolder and more ambitious project that also seeks to redress many of the deep-seated problems that have long plagued the region is required. The Community of the Americas proposed in this book rests upon the important work that has already been done at the sub-regional level in terms of economic and political reform, identifying infrastructure and human capital needs, and regulating migration. It provides a new and cohesive vision for U.S. policy in Latin America and the Caribbean.
Book Synopsis Coping with the Collapse of the Old Order: by : Kenneth Hall
Download or read book Coping with the Collapse of the Old Order: written by Kenneth Hall and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2013-02-19 with total page 737 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On July 4, 2009, the region celebrated thirty-six years as a formal Caribbean Community (CARICOM). The analyses contained in this publication in the The Integrationist Series all tend to suggest that CARICOM now, more than ever, needs to transform its experiences over these years into a more structured foundation for maximising the multiplier effects of collective representation, and for leveraging CARICOMs diplomatic efforts and resources in a more coordinated and integrated manner. This imperative is necessitated by the rapidly changing international environment which has far too often impacted negatively on small developing countries, leaving them increasingly vulnerable and marginalized.
