In 2004, nearly three years after his wife passed away, Yong Da, the author's father embarked upon the journey of his life to America. Aged and broken-hearted, he was looking for a new beginning. This humorous, moving, and rich memoir is about the author's efforts to help her dad to fit into a new environment and to re-establish their relationship. It focuses on ordinary, but profound experiences that a father and a daughter shared, reflecting upon their personal values, perspectives, and priorities during a five-year period and offers the reader insight into the life and struggle of a contemporary immigrant family. Book excerpt: The Hindu-Arabic numeral system (1, 2, 3, ...) is one of mankind's greatest achievements and one of its most commonly used inventions. How did it originate? Those who have written about the numeral system have hypothesized that it originated in India; however, there is little evidence to support this claim. This book provides considerable evidence to show that the Hindu-Arabic numeral system, despite its commonly accepted name, has its origins in the Chinese rod numeral system. This system was widely used in China from antiquity till the 16th century. It was used by officials, astronomers, traders and others to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and other arithmetic operations, and also used by mathematicians to develop arithmetic and algebra. Based on this system, numerous mathematical treatises were written. Sun Zi suanjing (The Mathematical Classic of Sun Zi), written around 400 A.D., is the earliest existing work to have a description of the rod numerals and their operations. With this treatise as a central reference, the first part of the book discusses the development of arithmetic and the beginnings of algebra in ancient China and, on the basis of this knowledge, advances the thesis that the Hindu-Arabic numeral system has its origins in the rod numeral system. Part Two gives a complete translation of Sun Zi suanjing. In this revised edition, Lam Lay Yong has included an edited text of her plenary lecture entitled "Ancient Chinese Mathematics and Its Influence on World Mathematics", which was delivered at the International Congress of Mathematicians, Beijing 2002, after she received the prestigious Kenneth O. May Medal conferred by the International Commission on the History of Mathematics. This should serve as a useful and easy-to-comprehend introduction to the book.

Rockefeller, Jr.—and use them to guide the reader through four centuries of the city’s story. Beginning with the oldest standing building in the city, , a 1652 farmhouse in Brooklyn, and journeying all the way to the rebuilding of the World Trade Center, the book follows in the footsteps of these iconic New Yorkers. The authors tell the stories of everyone from slave traders and long-forgotten politicians to the movers and shakers of Gilded Age society and the Greenwich Village folk scene. One part history and one part personal narrative, Footprints in New York creates a different way of looking at the past, exploring new connections and forgotten chapters in the story of America’s greatest metropolis. Book excerpt: Asif Khan's Tracing My Footsteps is the story of growing up in a small town in India in the early years of partition. Born in a house built in 1760, Khan describes the culture and traditions in a joint family setup: the decorum, lifestyle, and the social and moral obligations, which the members of the family were supposed to follow. The book describes the life outside the house, a settlement that took place hundreds of years ago and was in its original shape. Tracing My Footsteps is a wonderful reflection on time and space, a depiction of "old life" and customs of the long-ago world. The book delightfully travels across many genres, combining autobiography, family history, travel writing, and humorous sketches. The reader will find himself laughing, smiling, sighing, and even crying at various interludes. Every page has something wonderful.

Dr. Watson, having returned to London after serving in the Second Anglo-Afghan War, is forced to leave the armed services and is now looking for a place to live. He runs into an old friend named Stamford who mentions that an acquaintance of his, Sherlock Holmes, is looking for someone to split the rent at a flat at 221B Baker Street, but he cautions Watson about Holmes's eccentricities. Watson is amazed by Holmes, who has profound knowledge of chemistry and sensational literature, and very precise knowledge of geology, botany and many other disciplines. After much speculation by Watson, Holmes reveals that he is a "consulting detective" and he reads the telegram requesting consultation in a fresh murder case. Watson urges him to join, so Holmes invites him to accompany him as he investigates the crime scene, an abandoned house off the Brixton Road.
