Book Synopsis Nonlinear Programming by : Olvi L. Mangasarian
Download or read book Nonlinear Programming written by Olvi L. Mangasarian and published by SIAM. This book was released on 1994-01-01 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This reprint of the 1969 book of the same name is a concise, rigorous, yet accessible, account of the fundamentals of constrained optimization theory. Many problems arising in diverse fields such as machine learning, medicine, chemical engineering, structural design, and airline scheduling can be reduced to a constrained optimization problem. This book provides readers with the fundamentals needed to study and solve such problems. Beginning with a chapter on linear inequalities and theorems of the alternative, basics of convex sets and separation theorems are then derived based on these theorems. This is followed by a chapter on convex functions that includes theorems of the alternative for such functions. These results are used in obtaining the saddlepoint optimality conditions of nonlinear programming without differentiability assumptions.

Download or read book The Mathematics of Nonlinear Programming written by Anthony L. Peressini and published by Springer. This book was released on 1993-06-17 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nonlinear programming provides an excellent opportunity to explore an interesting variety of pure and solidly applicable mathematics, numerical analysis, and computing. This text develops some of the ideas and techniques involved in the optimization methods using calculus, leading to the study of convexity. This is followed by material on basic numerical methods, least squares, the Karush-Kuhn-Tucker theorem, penalty functions, and Lagrange multipliers. The authors have aimed their presentation at the student who has a working knowledge of matrix algebra and advanced calculus, but has had no previous exposure to optimization.

Book Synopsis Linear and Nonlinear Optimization by : Richard W. Cottle
Download or read book Linear and Nonlinear Optimization written by Richard W. Cottle and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-06-11 with total page 614 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook on Linear and Nonlinear Optimization is intended for graduate and advanced undergraduate students in operations research and related fields. It is both literate and mathematically strong, yet requires no prior course in optimization. As suggested by its title, the book is divided into two parts covering in their individual chapters LP Models and Applications; Linear Equations and Inequalities; The Simplex Algorithm; Simplex Algorithm Continued; Duality and the Dual Simplex Algorithm; Postoptimality Analyses; Computational Considerations; Nonlinear (NLP) Models and Applications; Unconstrained Optimization; Descent Methods; Optimality Conditions; Problems with Linear Constraints; Problems with Nonlinear Constraints; Interior-Point Methods; and an Appendix covering Mathematical Concepts. Each chapter ends with a set of exercises. The book is based on lecture notes the authors have used in numerous optimization courses the authors have taught at Stanford University. It emphasizes modeling and numerical algorithms for optimization with continuous (not integer) variables. The discussion presents the underlying theory without always focusing on formal mathematical proofs (which can be found in cited references). Another feature of this book is its inclusion of cultural and historical matters, most often appearing among the footnotes. "This book is a real gem. The authors do a masterful job of rigorously presenting all of the relevant theory clearly and concisely while managing to avoid unnecessary tedious mathematical details. This is an ideal book for teaching a one or two semester masters-level course in optimization – it broadly covers linear and nonlinear programming effectively balancing modeling, algorithmic theory, computation, implementation, illuminating historical facts, and numerous interesting examples and exercises. Due to the clarity of the exposition, this book also serves as a valuable reference for self-study." Professor Ilan Adler, IEOR Department, UC Berkeley "A carefully crafted introduction to the main elements and applications of mathematical optimization. This volume presents the essential concepts of linear and nonlinear programming in an accessible format filled with anecdotes, examples, and exercises that bring the topic to life. The authors plumb their decades of experience in optimization to provide an enriching layer of historical context. Suitable for advanced undergraduates and masters students in management science, operations research, and related fields." Michael P. Friedlander, IBM Professor of Computer Science, Professor of Mathematics, University of British Columbia
Book Synopsis Hybrid Systems, Optimal Control and Hybrid Vehicles by : Thomas J. Böhme
Download or read book Hybrid Systems, Optimal Control and Hybrid Vehicles written by Thomas J. Böhme and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-02-01 with total page 549 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book assembles new methods showing the automotive engineer for the first time how hybrid vehicle configurations can be modeled as systems with discrete and continuous controls. These hybrid systems describe naturally and compactly the networks of embedded systems which use elements such as integrators, hysteresis, state-machines and logical rules to describe the evolution of continuous and discrete dynamics and arise inevitably when modeling hybrid electric vehicles. They can throw light on systems which may otherwise be too complex or recondite. Hybrid Systems, Optimal Control and Hybrid Vehicles shows the reader how to formulate and solve control problems which satisfy multiple objectives which may be arbitrary and complex with contradictory influences on fuel consumption, emissions and drivability. The text introduces industrial engineers, postgraduates and researchers to the theory of hybrid optimal control problems. A series of novel algorithmic developments provides tools for solving engineering problems of growing complexity in the field of hybrid vehicles. Important topics of real relevance rarely found in text books and research publications—switching costs, sensitivity of discrete decisions and there impact on fuel savings, etc.—are discussed and supported with practical applications. These demonstrate the contribution of optimal hybrid control in predictive energy management, advanced powertrain calibration, and the optimization of vehicle configuration with respect to fuel economy, lowest emissions and smoothest drivability. Numerical issues such as computing resources, simplifications and stability are treated to enable readers to assess such complex systems. To help industrial engineers and managers with project decision-making, solutions for many important problems in hybrid vehicle control are provided in terms of requirements, benefits and risks.

Book Synopsis Basic Mathematical Programming Theory by : Giorgio Giorgi
Download or read book Basic Mathematical Programming Theory written by Giorgio Giorgi and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-07-18 with total page 443 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The subject of (static) optimization, also called mathematical programming, is one of the most important and widespread branches of modern mathematics, serving as a cornerstone of such scientific subjects as economic analysis, operations research, management sciences, engineering, chemistry, physics, statistics, computer science, biology, and social sciences. This book presents a unified, progressive treatment of the basic mathematical tools of mathematical programming theory. The authors expose said tools, along with results concerning the most common mathematical programming problems formulated in a finite-dimensional setting, forming the basis for further study of the basic questions on the various algorithmic methods and the most important particular applications of mathematical programming problems. This book assumes no previous experience in optimization theory, and the treatment of the various topics is largely self-contained. Prerequisites are the basic tools of differential calculus for functions of several variables, the basic notions of topology and of linear algebra, and the basic mathematical notions and theoretical background used in analyzing optimization problems. The book is aimed at both undergraduate and postgraduate students interested in mathematical programming problems but also those professionals who use optimization methods and wish to learn the more theoretical aspects of these questions.
