Social History of Punitive Institutions in Spain needs meetings and discussions, comparison and collaboration between researchers. Only then it will become visible and intelligible as a historiographical trend and, above all, as a theoretical-methodological hope, because in fact, now it is more than conceivable as a historiographical practice. Here in this book are outlined, along with the achievements, the shortcomings and the most pressing challenges. Far from seeking an extemporaneous autonomy, Social History of Punitive Institutions wants to try to find its own feasibility based on intersections and good mixings. Those objectives were considered by the Study Group about History of Prison and Punitive Institutions (Grupo de Estudio sobre la Historia de la Prisión y las Instituciones Punitivas, GEHPIP) –an interuniversity team and with central office at Universidad de Castilla-La Mancha (UCLM)– when organising what it decided to name in an homonymous way 1st International Congress on History of Prison and Punitive Institutions (I Congreso Internacional sobre Historia de la Prisión y las Instituciones Punitivas), held in Ciudad Real (Spain) from 10 to 12 April 2013. The electronic book here presented is a good example of what it was told and discussed there.

Book excerpt: Starting from the assertion that crisis is part of the essence of labour law, this volume brings together researchers in the field who accepted the challenge to critically reflect on this branch of the discipline. As the COVID-19 pandemic has had a global impact, labour law across the world must come to terms with a new reality. In this context, it would be prudent to adapt to new circumstances by taking known paths. To this end, this book reflects on what effectively constitutes labour law, considering questions which are not usual within labour law. Insights from philosophical, sociological and even economic standpoints are mobilised to reconcile the past with the future of labour law.

Book excerpt: After twenty years of marriage, Rami discovers that her husband has been living a double--or rather, a quintuple--life. Tony, a senior police officer in Maputo, has apparently been supporting four other families for many years. Rami remains calm in the face of her husband's duplicity and plots to make an honest man out of him. After Tony is forced to marry the four other women--as well as an additional lover--according to polygamist custom, the rival lovers join together to declare their voices and demand their rights. In this brilliantly funny and feverishly scathing critique, a major work from Mozambique's first published female novelist, Paulina Chiziane explores her country's traditional culture, its values and hypocrisy, and the subjection of women the world over.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: `This exceptionally interesting study provides an up-to-date and integrated perspective on organizations, violence, gender and sexuality. It pays particular attention to the power wielded by hierarchies of heterosexual men, and the ways in which this produces violence in different, carefully analyzed forms. This book is a major contribution to the construction of sociological and political knowledge that is not founded on the dominant definitions of heterosexual masculinities' - Professor Terrell Carver, University of Bristol`This is a wide-ranging and authoritative book. The authors draw attention to the huge amount of evidence now available that documents the gendering and sexualising processes at the core of organisational life. While they never nag about violation and inequality, they are nonetheless relentless in confronting the reader with the weight of evidence'- Professor Rosemary Pringle, University of SouthamptonThis book brings together the themes of gender, sexuality, violence and organizations. The authors synthesize the literature and research which has been done in these fields and provide a coherent framework for understanding the interrelationship between these concepts. The importance of violence and abuse, and particularly men's violence to women, children and other men has been well established, especially through feminist and some pro-feminist research. The insights of this scholarship have rarely been applied to organizational analysis. The authors draw on this literature and their own research, as well as relevant literatures on safety and risk at work; anxiety and stress at work; organizational policies on violence; sexual harassment and bullying in organizations; and male sexuality, to provide valuable information on violence in and around organizations.Gender, Sexuality and Violence in Organizations breaks new ground in organization studies and will be essential reading for academics and students in both organization studies and all those studying issues of gender and sexuality in organizations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A provocative and timely call for a moral approach to economics, drawing on philosophers, political theorists, writers, and economists from Aristotle to Marx to Keynes. What constitutes the good life? What is the true value of money? Why do we work such long hours merely to acquire greater wealth? These are some of the questions that many asked themselves when the financial system crashed in 2008. This book tackles such questions head-on. The authors begin with the great economist John Maynard Keynes. In 1930 Keynes predicted that, within a century, per capita income would steadily rise, people’s basic needs would be met, and no one would have to work more than fifteen hours a week. Clearly, he was wrong: though income has increased as he envisioned, our wants have seemingly gone unsatisfied, and we continue to work long hours. The Skidelskys explain why Keynes was mistaken. Then, arguing from the premise that economics is a moral science, they trace the concept of the good life from Aristotle to the present and show how our lives over the last half century have strayed from that ideal. Finally, they issue a call to think anew about what really matters in our lives and how to attain it. How Much Is Enough? is that rarity, a work of deep intelligence and ethical commitment accessible to all readers. It will be lauded, debated, cited, and criticized. It will not be ignored.

This book was released on 2019-02-15 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
