Book excerpt: Covers the design or redesign of chemicals with the specific intent of making them safe for people and the environment. Explains how commercially useful substances of low toxicity can be designed and developed through careful forethought and strategic molecular modification. Describes how existing industrial chemicals that are toxic can be redesigned to be less toxic but retain their usefulness. Discusses how to merge the disciplines of toxicology and chemistry to design new, less toxic commercial chemicals or redesign existing toxic commercial chemicals to result in less toxic substitutes. Provides researchers, developers, and manufacturers of industrial chemicals with a reference source for designing safer chemicals.

Book Synopsis Peroxisome Proliferation and Its Role in Carcinogenesis by :
Download or read book Peroxisome Proliferation and Its Role in Carcinogenesis written by and published by World Health Organization. This book was released on 1995 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A state-of-the-art consensus report on what is known about peroxisome proliferation, the mechanisms involved, and their relevance to carcinogenesis. Peroxisomes are single, membrane-limited, cytoplasmic organelles that are found in cells of animals, plants, fungi, and protozoa. Peroxisome proliferators include certain hypolipidaemic drugs, phthalate ester plasticizers, industrial solvents, herbicides, food flavours, leukotriene D4 antagonists, and hormones. Numerous studies in rats and mice have demonstrated the hepatocarcinogenic effects of peroxisome proliferators, and these compounds have been unequivocally established as carcinogens. Since humans are exposed to peroxisome proliferators to a significant extent, assessment of the adverse biological effects of this group of compounds, and particularly their potential carcinogenicity, has become an important issue. The report has two parts. The first records the consensus reached by a group of eleven experts, including several of the leading investigators in this field. Questions addressed include the mechanisms by which peroxisome proliferators exert their carcinogenic effects in rodents, the relevance of animal studies to the evaluation of carcinogenic risk in humans, and the potential use of peroxisome proliferation as a biological marker for liver cancer. The report concludes that compounds inducing peroxisome proliferation in rats and mice have little, if any, effect on human liver. The report also issues advice on the interpretation of peroxisome proliferation, demonstrated in animal studies, when evaluating the carcinogenic risk to humans. The second part consists of three background papers presented by members of the working group.

Download or read book Technical Report on Toxicology and Carcinogenesis Studies of A-Methylstyrene (CAS No. 98-83-9) in F344/N Rats and B6C3F1 Mice (Inhalation Studies) written by M. E. Wyde and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2008-04 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: a-Methylstyrene is used to make heat-resistant acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene resins & polymers. This report studies the effects of a-methylstyrene on male & female rats & mice to identify potential toxic or cancer-related hazards. It concludes that exposure to a-methylstyrene in the air caused kidney tumors, & possibly mononuclear cell leukemia, in male rats. It concludes that a-methylstyrene caused liver cancer in female mice, & also possibly in male mice. Charts, tables, graphs & plates.

Book Synopsis Toxicology and Carcinogenesis Studies of Bromodichloromethane No 75-27-4) in Male F344/N Rats and Female B6C3Fi Mice by : R. L. Melnick
Download or read book Toxicology and Carcinogenesis Studies of Bromodichloromethane No 75-27-4) in Male F344/N Rats and Female B6C3Fi Mice written by R. L. Melnick and published by . This book was released on 2006-08 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bromodichloromethane (BR) is a by-product of the chlorination of drinking water. It has been shown to be carcinogenic at multiple sites in rats & in mice after administration by gavage in corn oil. To further characterize its dose-response relationships for eval. of human risk, BR was nominated for toxicity & carcinogenicity studies in rats & mice by drinking water exposure. Male F344/N rats & female B6C3F1 mice were exposed to BR in drinking water for 3 weeks or 2 years. Genetic toxicology studies were conducted in Salmonella typhimurium, L5178Y mouse lymphoma cells, cultured Chinese hamster ovary cells, mouse bone marrow cell, & mouse peripheral blood erythrocytes. None of these studies showed evidence of carcinogenic activity. Illustrations.

Butler and published by . This book was released on 2009-03 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Propargyl alcohol is a commercially available acetylenic primary alcohol. It is used in a variety of chemical manufacturing processes and to protect steel from becoming brittle. The researchers studied propargyl alcohol to determine if it caused cancer in rats or mice. All groups of animals exposed to propargyl alcohol experienced a variety of lesions in the epithelial tissues of the nose, including hyperplase, metaplasia, and inflammation. Adenomas of the respiratory epithelium of the nose were observed in male rats and in male and female mice exposed to propargyl alcohol. The rate of mononuclear cell leukemia was also increased in exposed male rats, and the rate of Harderian gland edenomas was increased in exposed male mice. Illus.
