Download or read book Wayne Township written by Cathy Tobin and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2001 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using over two hundred historical photographs, Wayne Township offers a unique view of a town that has undergone great change in its lifetime. Wayne was traversed by Native Americans for thousands of years before Dutch businessmen and farmers settled there c. 1695. This book illustrates how Wayne's twenty-first-century landscape of busy retail centers, transportation highways, and residential neighborhoods was once a fertile, cultivated valley. The images in this book reveal Wayne's economic and cultural past, including the farmsteads, barns, gristmills, sawmills, blacksmith shops, and churches that made up the Wayne Township region years ago. Wayne Township provides clues to a past rich in history in the images of more than thirty existing historic structures and lost architectural treasures, and reveals legends, folk tales, ghost stories, and historical fact. The book tells many stories, including those of Arent Schuyler's exploration of the valley and George Washington's formulation of war-winning strategies at the Dey Mansion. It explores early industry in Wayne-the iron furnace at Pompton Falls, the brick manufacturing and powder works in Mountain View, and the arrival of the railroad in the area. Pictured are famous twentieth-century residents Albert Payson Terhune and his collies, Cecil B. DeMille, LeGrand Parish, and the horse Preakness.

Book Synopsis Toast of the Town: The Life and Times of Sunnie Wilson by : Sunnie Wilson
Download or read book Toast of the Town: The Life and Times of Sunnie Wilson written by Sunnie Wilson and published by Wayne State University Press. This book was released on 2005-05-23 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As part of the great migration of southern blacks to the north, Sunnie Wilson came to Detroit from South Carolina after graduating from college, and soon became a pillar in the local music industry. He started out as a song and dance performer, but found his niche as a local promoter of boxing and musical acts. Part oral history, memoir, and biography, Toast of the Town draws from hundreds of hours of taped conversations between Sunnie Wilson and John Cohassey, as Wilson reflected on the changes in Detroit over the last sixty years. Supported by extensive research, Wilson's reminiscence is complemented by photographs from his own collection, which capture the spirit of the times. An influential insider's perspective, Toast of the Town fills a void in the documented history of Detroit's black business and entertainment community from the 1920s to the present.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early and mid-twentieth century, Chinese migrants evaded draconian anti-immigrant laws by entering the US under false papers that identified them as the sons of people who had returned to China to marry. Wayne Hung Wong tells the story of his life after emigrating to Wichita, Kansas, as a thirteen-year-old paper son. After working in his father’s restaurant as a teen, Wong served in an all-Chinese Air Force unit stationed in China during World War II. His account traces the impact of race and segregation on his service experience and follows his postwar life from finding a wife in Taishan through his involvement in the government’s amnesty program for Chinese immigrants and career in real estate. Throughout, Wong describes the realities of life as part of a small Chinese American community in a midwestern town. Vivid and rich with poignant insights, American Paper Son explores twentieth-century Asian American history through one person’s experiences.
