The absorbing-layer equations are simply obtained by splitting the governing equations in the coordinate directions and introducing absorption coefficients in each split equation. This methodology is similar to that used by Berenger for the numerical solutions of Maxwell's equations. Specifically, we apply this methodology to three physical problems - shock-vortex interactions, a plane free shear flow and an axisymmetric jet, with emphasis on acoustic wave propagation. Our numerical results indicate that the use of absorbing layers effectively minimizes numerical reflection in all three problems considered.

Book excerpt: These ten detailed and authoritative survey articles on numerical methods for direct and inverse wave propagation problems are written by leading experts. Researchers and practitioners in computational wave propagation, from postgraduate level onwards, will find the breadth and depth of coverage of recent developments a valuable resource. The articles describe a wide range of topics on the application and analysis of methods for time and frequency domain PDE and boundary integral formulations of wave propagation problems. Electromagnetic, seismic and acoustic equations are considered. Recent developments in methods and analysis ranging from finite differences to hp-adaptive finite elements, including high-accuracy and fast methods are described with extensive references.

Book excerpt: This lecture presents the perfectly matched layer (PML) absorbing boundary condition (ABC) used to simulate free space when solving the Maxwell equations with such finite methods as the finite difference time domain (FDTD) method or the finite element method. The frequency domain and the time domain equations are derived for the different forms of PML media, namely the split PML, the CPML, the NPML, and the uniaxial PML, in the cases of PMLs matched to isotropic, anisotropic, and dispersive media. The implementation of the PML ABC in the FDTD method is presented in detail. Propagation and reflection of waves in the discretized FDTD space are derived and discussed, with a special emphasis on the problem of evanescent waves. The optimization of the PML ABC is addressed in two typical applications of the FDTD method: first, wave-structure interaction problems, and secondly, waveguide problems. Finally, a review of the literature on the application of the PML ABC to other numerical techniques of electromagnetics and to other partial differential equations of physics is provided. In addition, a software package for computing the actual reflection from a FDTD-PML is provided. It is available here.

Book excerpt: The research activity leading to this dissertation focused on the boundary treatment for computational fluid dynamics problems, especially those with unbounded domains. This involved a rigorous literature survey of boundary treatment techniques. The primary interest of this effort was on one of the emerging concepts of nonreflecting boundary treatment for numerical schemes, namely the perfectly matched layer (PML) absorbing technique. The need for an appropriate space-time transformation for a stable PML emphasized in previous efforts was the starting point for this developmental research activity. Based on this, unsplit PML equations were constructed for Euler equations linearized over a uniform mean flow with a proper space-time transformation. Dispersion analysis was carried out to demonstrate the effectiveness of the space-time transformation in terms of stability of the PML formulation. Numerous numerical simulations were carried out to investigate the stability of the PML formulation for long-term integration of various combinations of time-step size and PML parameters. The major focus of this research was to extend the construction of the PML for nonlinear Euler equations in a generalized coordinate system to widen its application in uniform and nonuniform grid structures. Emphasis was placed on the application of conventional numerical schemes without employing any form of artificial dissipation or numerical filtering. With this objective in mind, the split-form PML equations for nonlinear Euler equations were constructed. Various numerical simulations were carried out to validate the PML formulation and demonstrate its effectiveness as an absorbing boundary condition.
