Book excerpt: In order to improve their applicability as a tool for solving partial differential equations in computational science, we equip kernel-based meshless methods with a number of new capabilities. First, we provide kernel-based meshless methods with the first wellposed, general technique which allows for adaptively-scaled trial functions. This is done by constructing an adaptively-scaled kernel which maintains positive definiteness. We extend sampling inequalities to optimally bound fractional order Sobolev norms in terms of possibly higher order data. This sampling inequality is then applied to obtain more optimal error bounds in a reformulation of Schaback's framework for unsymmetric meshless methods. We provide kernel-based meshless methods with a direct visualization technique, by adapting Fourier volume rendering to deal directly with meshless data, which was previously only used directly for grid-based data. Modern graphics hardware has emerged as a powerful architecture for scientific computing. We implement an unstructured grid-based inviscid, compressible flow solver on modern graphics hardware, and obtain an order of magnitude speed-up in comparison to an equivalent code running on a quad-core CPU.

Book excerpt: Mesh generation, which is essential to most traditional numerical discretizations, often remains the bottleneck of the simulation process. Many researchers have developed meshless algorithms to circumvent mesh generation. Unfortunately, almost all existing meshless methods suffer from the lack of formal discrete conservation, which can lead to unpredictable numerical errors in the presence of discontinuities. This thesis addresses the issue of non-conservation in existing meshless methods. It focuses on the formulation and implementation of a novel conservative meshless scheme and its applications in computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The scheme, first of such nature documented in the literature, is formulated based on obtaining derivative approximations using function values and generated coefficients satisfying a set of reciprocity and polynomial consistency conditions. The required coefficients are generated by the solution of a global quadratic program. They minimize an upper bound of a representation of the global discretization error in addition to satisfying the necessary conditions. A generalization of the derivative approximation allows the use of arbitrary consistent interface values in the derivative operator while maintaining discrete conservation. This creates a flexible framework within which a wide variety of numerical flux schemes, such as those previously developed for finite volume discretization, can be used with no additional costs. The practicality of this new framework is demonstrated by solving compressible flow problems using, without modifications, a piece of software designed for finite volume discretization. The meshless numerical results show superconvergence and compare well with those obtained using meshed finite volume discretizations and other meshless schemes, highlighting the validity of the new framework and its potential to be applied to problems of greater complexity and scale.

This method, called deferred filtering, provides efficient decompression when coupled with rendering, allowing interpolation and lighting based on gradients computed on-the-fly, all at interactive frame rates. We then address several other challenges in volumetric compression. First, we consider multidimensional coding of multivariate, time-varying volume data. We present a method that exploits correlations among related variables in order to increase the compression rate as compared to independent compression of variables. We then develop a sophisticated transform coding method that allows decompression in graphics hardware, with the result being a JPEG-like transform coding scheme that allows very large volumes to be compressed and then decompressed in real-time while rendering in graphics hardware. Finally, we describe a lossless floating-point volume compression scheme based on a switched prediction approach that is able to achieve significantly better rates as compared to existing methods with a small increase in compression time. Overall, our work addresses many of the outstanding challenges in data compression that are unique to volume data reduction. Finally, lossy compression adds uncertainty to the volume visualization, and so in order to explore the effects of compression on volume rendering we address the issue of uncertainty in visualization. We use a self-validating computational model to compute a posteriori uncertainty bounds, based on a novel uncertainty framework that captures the various forms of uncertainty present in visualization. We then go on to show that such uncertainty-aware visualizations can produce more complete depictions of the data, thereby allowing more reliable conclusions and informed decisions. This is shown for volume rendering, where we demonstrate that fuzzy volume rendering (volume rendering based on our framework) is capable of generating a reliable volume visualization in which a range of possible renderings is produced, as opposed to a single rendering in which the degree of uncertainty is completely disregarded. Our approach, by computing and communicating the uncertainty in volume rendering, allows viewers a greater degree of confidence in assigning an interpretation to the visualization.
