Across 38 chapters, including twelve that are brand new to this edition, the approach is interdisciplinary, spanning human resources development, adult learning (educational perspective), psychology, career and vocational learning, management and executive development, cultural anthropology, the humanities, and gerontology. This volume covers trends that contribute to the need for continuous learning, considers psychological characteristics that relate to the drive to learn, reviews existing theory and research on adult learning, describes training methods and learning technologies for instructional design, and explores current and future challenges to support continuous learning.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook gives a wide-ranging, research-informed introduction to issues in lifelong learning across a variety of educational settings and practices. Its very accessible approach is multi-disciplinary drawing on sociology and psychology in particular. In addition, issues are discussed within an international context. While there has been a proliferation of texts focussing on particular areas of practice such as higher education, there is little in the way of a broad overview. Chapters one to four introduce various conceptions of lifelong learning, the factors that impinge on learning through the life course, and the social and the economic rationale for lifelong learning. Chapters five-ten consider the varied sites of lifelong learning, from the micro to macro (from the home to the region to the virtual). Chapter eleven draws the strands together in the context of turbulence and continuing transition in personal and work roles, and against the background of future technological development. This timely overview will be relevant to education and training professionals, education studies students and the general reader.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most important educational paradigm of our time is the idea of Lifelong Learning. According to this statement, Andrea Óhidy reflects the major trends in the European discussion on Lifelong Learning. The author’s main focus is the pedagogic view of the idea. She gives an overview of the development and the main points of the European discussion (chapter 1 and 2), analyses concepts of Lifelong Learning in school (3) and in the field of adult education (4) and also presents an interesting description of training-programmes in university education (5). These five chapters present some of the first results of a research study on Lifelong Learning in Germany and Hungary. (The doctoral thesis of Andrea Óhidy is on the “Adaptation of the idea of Lifelong Learning in German and Hungarian education and education policy”). Andrea Óhidy reflects the growing interest in and acceptance of concepts of Lifelong Learning in modern Europe. The most interesting point in the presented work is the Eastern European view. Hungary is one of the new Eastern European countries in which concepts of Lifelong Learning are getting popular. Above all one interesting result of her comparative research shows the similarities of German and Hungarian concepts of Lifelong Learning. For the first time in a European educational discussion readers find an excellent analysis of Hungarian papers on Lifelong Learning.

Book excerpt: Lifelong learning has developed enormously as a distinct area of study within education in recent years not least because numerous governments and educational strategists have become very vocal supporters of new ways of learning throughout all stages of life. This guide to the topic brings together new writing from some of the leading thinkers in the field to offer a broad ranging and detailed snapshot of the position to date. The book provides a critical summary of current developments in understanding adult learning and the social context in which they are located. This provides a background for the framing of issues and the problems that emerge in institutional and non-formal contexts of lifelong learning. Students undertaking courses of study in this area as well as a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate students in a variety of professional areas will find the material essential reading.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is 5 years since the publication of the seminal paper on “Design Science in Information Systems Research” by Hevner, March, Park, and Ram in MIS Quarterly and the initiation of the Information Technology and Systems department of the Communications of AIS. These events in 2004 are markers in the move of design science to the forefront of information systems research. A suf cient interval has elapsed since then to allow assessment of from where the eld has come and where it should go. Design science research and behavioral science research started as dual tracks when IS was a young eld. By the 1990s, the in ux of behavioral scientists started to dominate the number of design scientists and the eld moved in that direction. By the early 2000s, design people were having dif culty publishing in mainline IS journals and in being tenured in many universities. Yes, an annual Workshop on Information Technology and Systems (WITS) was established in 1991 in conju- tion with the International Conference on Information Systems (ICIS) and grew each year. But that was the extent of design science recognition. Fortunately, a revival is underway. By 2009, when this foreword was written, the fourth DESRIST c- ference has been held and plans are afoot for the 2010 meeting. Design scientists regained respect and recognition in many venues where they previously had little.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Foundations of Lifelong Education deals with the interdisciplinary foundations of lifelong education and examines a number of basic issues concerning lifelong education, such as why education should be treated as a lifelong process, or how the functions of lifelong education are related to historical and contemporary developments in society. The goals, contents, and processes of learning appropriate to the aspirations of lifelong education are also explored, as well as the extent to which lifelong education is feasible and practicable in different socio-economic and ideological conditions. Comprised of eight chapters, this book begins with an overview of methodological considerations in the present study, such as the nature of the foundations content; general steps that may be followed for constructing discipline-based foundations; and the ways of incorporating several elements of interdisciplinarity into the study. The reader is then introduced to the sociological and philosophical aspects of lifelong education, along with the historical background on the concept of lifelong education. In addition to sociology and philosophy, lifelong education in relation to anthropology, ecology, psychology, and economics is also analyzed. The book concludes by presenting illustrative analyses and syntheses of the ideas discussed in the preceding chapters based on selected disciplines. This monograph is intended for educators, social reformers, and educational policymakers.

Using his unique vantage point from consulting with schools, universities, local, governmental and global authorities, Professor Longworth brings the development of lifelong learning bang up-to-date with a complete survey of the principles of lifelong learning including examples from around the world and crucial information on the impact of lifelong learning on 21st century schools.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book has been primarily written for people who are interested and involved in helping students maximise the learning and development they gain from their higher education experience. The authors contributing to this book hope that their attempt to examine and give practical meaning to the idea of lifewideness makes sense to you and helps you support and facilitate development of people in your professional context. We hope also that it might have meaning for you in your own life. The book is also written for people who are helping higher education institutions develop a better understanding of the ways in which students engage in and are shaped by their whole life experience while they are studying. And for those people who are trying to bring about change in institutional practice, particularly those who are finding it challenging, we hope the contributions in this book will reinforce your conviction that this is a worthwhile thing to do. In recent years, Universities in the UK have been encouraged to evaluate what they do through the lens of the students' experience. This has resulted in an increasing institutional interest and awareness in the way in which students integrate higher education with their life beyond the campus. Student Support Services in some universities have been inspired by the visionary report ‘Learning Reconsidered: A Campus-wide Focus on the Student Experience’ (NASPA and ACPA 2004). We hope that this book will encourage and be of value to those who make decisions or who create policies relating to the student experience.
