Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two key demands are being made of ecology: that the discipline increasingly be a predictive one; and that ecologists be prepared to consider large-scale systems. These systems become simple or complex based on the level and type of explanation required, and a strict and consistent epistemology is needed in light of new insights into the nature of complexity. T. F. H. Allen and Thomas W. Hoekstra argue that complex systems analysis requires ecologists to distinguish models and to recognize that models must invoke a scale and point of view. Toward a Unified Ecology offers a strategy to attain a unity that brings basic ecology to bear on ecological management. Beginning with hierarchy theory as a basic premise, the book goes on to explain that the conventional "levels"--ecosystems, landscapes, communities, populations, organisms--are not levels in themselves but criteria for observation. The authors assert that the essential character of ecology's subdisciplines is scale-dependent. Putting scale back into systems of well-defined type captures the richness of the connections in the material ecological system. Allen and Hoekstra present a conceptual framework for a more coherent view of ecology, showing how to link the various parts of ecology into a natural whole.

Book excerpt: Environmental toxicology is one of the most interdisciplinary sciences. Biologists, microbiologists, chemists, engineers, environmentalists, ecologists and other scientists work together in this new scientific discipline. Assessment of the environmental effects of chemicals is complicated as it depends on the organisms tested and involves not only the toxicity of individual chemicals, but also their interactive effects (including antagonistic and synergistic ones), and genotoxicity, mutagenicity and immunotoxicity testing. Hazardous waste management is closely related to environmental toxicology and there is a growing need for techniques and practices to minimize the environmental effects of chemicals. This volume contains the contributions presented at the 2nd Conference on Environmental Toxicology, which was held in Granada, Spain in 2008. The papers cover the following subject areas: Risk Assessment; Human Health Risk; Effluent Toxicity; Bioaccumulation of Chemicals; Biodegredation and Bioremediation; Biological Effects Monitoring; Laboratory Tests and Validation; Ecotoxicity of Emerging Chemicals; New Trends in Environmental Toxicology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the current state of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) from an international perspective, the goal being to share ideas and visions for a sustainable future and to provide useful guidelines for academics, practitioners and policymakers in the context of the 2030 “Agenda for Sustainable Development” released by the United Nations. Research on CSR has evolved considerably over the last three decades. However, there are still many unanswered questions concerning the sustainability of business in an increasingly changing world, for example: If most companies consider CSR to be valuable to their organizations, why do only 15% of them systematically implement Social Responsibility initiatives? If CSR has been found to be profitable for companies, why are they so reluctant to develop an active, internal CSR policy? Why are there such significant differences in CSR adoption from country to country? Why does it take a huge crisis to make politicians react and regulate certain core CSR issues? This contributed volume answers these questions, presenting a wealth of case studies and new approaches in the process.

The aim of the book is to provide a user-friendly but theoretically grounded overview of the core dimensions of CR. The seven dimensions of CR are not offered as a definitive framework, but rather a flexible conceptual framework that is compatible with acknowledged thought leadership in the field. The author uses his diverse academic background, as well as his practitioner background, to debunk some of the myths associated with CSR using mini case studies, but also to illustrate the strategic importance of the concept of CR. This accessible book will be a valuable resource for business management scholars, instructors and upper-level students, and those with a particular interest in business ethics, CSR and corporate governance. It will also serve as a guide for participants in executive education courses.

Book excerpt: Major paradigm shifts are occurring at rates that are difficult to keep up with, such as a rise in neoliberal paradigm trends, the emergence of new paradigms in response to global challenges, the role of international organizations in promoting new policy paradigms, and the challenges of implementing new policy paradigms in different national contexts. To remain informed, a reference of these shifts is needed. Global Trends in Governance and Policy Paradigms dissects the intricate fabric of global governance through the lens of evolving policy paradigms. This book explores key themes that have shaped and continue to influence the trajectory of global policy and contemporary governance. The narrative unfolds by scrutinizing the ascendancy of the neoliberal paradigm and dissecting its impact on global governance structures. Beyond this, the text navigates through the dynamic responses of the international community to emerging global challenges, highlighting the role of influential international organizations in shaping and propagating innovative policy paradigms. This book establishes a comprehensive framework for understanding evidence-based policymaking, a crucial facet in the evolving discourse of global governance. Each chapter meticulously examines diverse dimensions, from the intersection of artificial intelligence and public policy to the intricacies of Islamic governance and the implications of emerging technologies on regulatory frameworks.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Engaging with Stakeholders: A Relational Perspective on Responsible Business contends that meaningful and constructive stakeholder engagement efforts should be rooted in a deep relational process of shared understanding, expectations, and viewpoints, through honest, continued dialogue between stakeholders and company management. This anthology follows and reaffirms this view, which also establishes the increasing need to explore the subtleties of how companies can respectfully engage their stakeholders in ways that reflect the corporate strategy and contribute to the ongoing development of business activities and creation of value, for themselves and stakeholders, from social, environmental, and economic perspectives. Stakeholder engagement practices, however, remain highly complex and difficult to manage; their ability to generate value in an inclusive way requires critical consideration. Sound stakeholder engagement efforts also constitute a keystone for responsible business activities. Drawing on a wide range of literature and studies, this book addresses key dimensions of stakeholder engagement, through a responsible business lens, and thereby contributes to identifying the opportunities, challenges, and key organizational implications associated with their unfolding. The four main topics covered are: • Delineating the nature and multiple raisons d’être of stakeholder engagement • Dialogical and communicational foundations of stakeholder engagement • Engaging with diverse stakeholders throughout the value chain • Reaping organizational returns and relational rewards of stakeholder engagement efforts
