Book excerpt: How are the Great Lakes doing and what progress are we making in protecting and restoring them? These are two of the most frequently asked questions about the largest source of surface fresh water in the world. Unfortunately, we do not have simple answers for them. With the tremendous efforts and resources invested in restoration by governments, the private sector, and non-profit organizations in the United States and Canada over the past 40 years, we need to be able to respond much more clearly and definitively in the future. Recognizing this, the International Joint Commission (IJC) through its Science Advisory Board and Water Quality Board initiated a project to put the Great Lakes community in a position to respond. The focus of the work is to identify a limited number of ecosystem indicators especially important to the health of the Great Lakes basin ecosystem and which tell us the most about it. Extensive work has been done over the years to measure the condition of the Lakes as part of the State of the Lakes Ecosystem Conference (SOLEC), and this work will form the basis for many of the indicators. What is being done now is selecting "the fewest that tell us the most." The need for key indicators is even greater now with a new Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement (the Agreement) between the United States and Canada. The two countries have determined that we should be able to drink the water, eat the fish, and swim at the beaches. To assess progress toward these goals and the overall condition of the Lakes, the indicators presented in this report are aligned with the chemical, physical and biological integrity framework included in the Agreement. The focus here is on ecological indicators. Indicators for public health will be covered in a separate, but related, report.

Book excerpt: This report summarizes the state of the Great Lakes as of the end of 1996, based on information contained in five background papers gathered for & discussed during the 1996 State of the Lakes Ecosystem Conference (SOLEC). It begins with background on the Great Lakes, SOLEC, the 1994 SOLEC conference, and an update on the states of ecosystem stressors & ecosystem health since 1994. Section 2 reviews how the state of the Lakes can be expressed in terms of integrity, biodiversity, and sustainability. Section 3 examines the state of information available on the state of the Great Lakes ecosystem. Section 4 briefly outlines ecosystem indicators and the meaning of indicator ratings. Section 5 presents overall ratings of the state of the Lakes' nearshore waters, coastal wetlands, and land by the Lakes. Section 6 reviews physical (including land use), chemical, and biological stressors affecting the nearshore. Section 7 presents detailed ratings of the state of each lake and section 8 rates the state of their connecting channels. The final section discusses environmental management challenges that need to be addressed. Includes glossary.

This book was released on 1988-07-08 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1978 Canada and the United States concluded an agreement for the protection and enhancement of water quality in the Great Lakes based on the ecosystem approach to management. Since ratification of this agreement, little progress has been made in practical application of this concept to basin-wide management for the Great Lakes. At the same time public concern for the quality of the Great Lakes and their future has risen dramatically. As a result, the need has arisen for a practical, authoritative explanation of the ecosystem concept. This volume, written by highly qualified authorities, addresses these important ecological, political, and economic issues in a systematic and informative manner. In this study, the ecosystem concept and its objectives are defined. The institutional structure that has evolved for governance of the Great Lakes, the need for a more effective governance structure, and prospects for rehabilitation of the Great Lakes Waters are crucial issues considered. The management question is the single most important policy question with respect to the Great Lakes and this is the only study available that brings together all pertinent information and provides steps for new and constructive management of the Great Lakes.
