Anand, Professor at the Jawaharlal University of New Delhi, points out in the introduction of his course that the principle of sovereign equality of States refers to two twin principles which are accepted as unimpeachable norms of modern international law which cannot be questioned: the principles of equality and of sovereignty of States. Taking this as his starting point, the author first discusses the sovereignty of States in an interdependent world. He then examines the principle of equality of States in an unequal world from a historical perspective. Finally, Professor Anand tackles the questions of equality of States in a hierarchical world order, and mini-States and equality of rights. La Méthode de la Référence à l'Ordre juridique compétent en Droit international privé, Paolo Picone Paolo Picone, Professor at the University of Naples, notes in the introduction to his course that contemporary international law, such as it evolved during the 19th century, developed different methods of coordination. One method has nevertheless been neglected, which consist in choosing not the applicable law, but the competent legal system. After discussing the crisis in private international law, the author examines the method of coordination of legal systems based on the applicable law, followed by one that is based on reference to the @@@competent legal system. @@@He describes the functioning of the latter method in the case of the creation of legal situations in the @@@for, and in the case of recognition of foreign legal situations in the for. Professor Picone finishes his course by investigating the use of this method in solving the problem of preliminary matters in private international law, the method's area of application and its future prospects.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the course of the last decade, the treatment of gynecologic cancer has evolved quite rapidly. New scientific and clinical advances have modified the standard of care and led to improved patient outcomes. At the same time, the treatment of gynecologic cancer has become increasingly complex, requiring the comprehensive review and assessment of multiple issues including genetics, radiology, surgery, molecular diagnostics, chemotherapy, and more. As a result, the harmony and open communication between these specialties facilitated by a multidisciplinary team approach are crucial in providing the best care to patients and ensuring successful treatment. Gynecologic Cancers: A Multidisciplinary Approach to Diagnosis and Management, written by a multidisciplinary team of authors representing a range of disciplines, is a valuable resource for physicians, fellows, nurses, physician assistants, physical therapists, and all health care providers involved in the treatment of gynecologic cancer. Gynecologic Cancers: A Multidisciplinary Approach to Diagnosis and Management summarizes the state-of-the-art issues related to the treatment of gynecologic cancer and describes an approach for optimal multidisciplinary care for women who have been diagnosed with or who are at higher risk to develop gynecologic cancer. About the Series: The Current Multidisciplinary Oncology series, edited by Charles R. Thomas, consolidates and integrates the varied aspects of multidisciplinary care for major topics in oncology, including breast, lung, prostrate, head and neck and more. The volumes in the Current Multidisciplinary Oncology series represent all related topic areas, including oncology, radiation oncology, pain, pathology, imaging, psychological support and the primary disease. In addition, each volume includes a chapter focusing on special populations and the disease's impact / difference on them, and discussion of future directions and quality of life issues. In addition each volume has a chapter written by a private practice oncologist. All Current Multidisciplinary Oncology titles provide: Consolidation and integration of the varied aspects of multidisciplinary care for major topics in oncology Coverage of all related topic areas, including medical and surgical oncology, radiation oncology, pain, pathology, imaging, psychological support, and the primary disease A chapter focusing on special populations and the disease's differing impact on them Discussion of quality-of-life issues

Book excerpt: In covering the topic of gynecologic and obstetric pathology, this book attempts to carve out its own niche midway between an atlas and a traditional textbook. The gross and microscopic images in this atlas are presented exclusively in color, and are supplemented by pertinent clinical information and discussions of differential diagnostic considerations. When deemed appropriate, images of immunohistochemical and special stains are included. To further enhance their visual appeal and the overall learning experience, many images in this book are presented with annotations and/or in composite form, and selected images have been enlarged. This image-intensive textbook also includes numerous Pap smear images and cytologic-histologic correlations. In addition to coverage of pathology of the organs of the female genital tract, brief overviews of the normal histology of these sites are provided as necessary background information. Separate chapters are also devoted to placental and peritoneal pathology. There is an emphasis on diagnostic-related issues pertaining to common lesions and their variants, although classic forms of rare lesions are also presented. In selected instances, recommendations on the processing of gross pathology specimens, discussions regarding the optimal approach for intraoperative consultations, and recommendations on the phrasing of key portions of pathology reports are provided. The 10 chapters of this book are organized by site, and the beginning of each chapter lists the entities discussed and their corresponding page numbers.

Book excerpt: As an addition to the European postgraduate training system for young neurosurgeons we began to publish in 1974 this series of Advances and Technical Standards in Neurosurgery which was later sponsored by the European Association of Neurosurgical Societies. This series was first discussed in 1972 at a combined meeting of the Italian and German Neurosurgical Societies in Taormina, the founding fathers of the series being Jean Brihaye, Bernard Pertuiset, Fritz Loew and Hugo Krayenbiihl. Thus were established the principles of European co operation which have been born from the European spirit, flourished in the European Association, and have throughout been associated with this serIes. The fact that the English language is well on the way to becoming the international medium at European scientific conferences is a great asset in terms of mutual understanding. Therefore we have decided to publish all contributions in English, regardless of the native language of the authors. All contributions are submitted to the entire editorial board before publication of any volume. Our series is not intended to compete with the publications of original scientific papers in other neurosurgical journals. Our intention is, rather, to present fields of neurosurgery and related areas in which important recent advances have been made. The contributions are written by spe cialists in the given fields and constitute the first part of each volume.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a thorough overview of the detection of PCNs using modern imaging techniques and a clear guide to the recognition of the different subtypes of PCN based on their radiologic and histopathologic features. This volume will serve as an excellent aid to the selection of optimal therapeutic strategies based on preoperative diagnosis. A further important feature is the emphasis placed on radiologic, clinical, and surgical correlations. Pancreatic cystic neoplasms (PCNs) have been increasingly recognized during the past decade, mainly because of the widespread use of modern imaging modalities for the investigation of often unrelated abdominal symptoms. The three most common subtypes of PCN are serous cystic neoplasms, mucinous cystic neoplasms, and intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasms. These subtypes have distinct radiologic and histopathological features, and their biological behavior differs greatly. Accurate preoperative diagnosis is of prime importance in selecting the optimal therapeutic strategy: while serous cystic neoplasms are almost always benign, and may be treated conservatively, mucinous cystic neoplasms and intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasms have malignant potential, warranting an aggressive surgical approach, i.e., pancreatectomy. Pancreatic Cystic Neoplasms will be of great interest to surgeons, gastroenterologists, radiologists, oncologists, and pathologists, and also to internists and residents in these specialties.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why a book dedicated to rare cancer management? Given the large variety of rare cancers, they take up a significant part of our daily practice. Therefore, we owe it to our patients with rare tumours that we use the knowledge gained in the treatment of the more common cancers to provide them with a better future. This knowledge comes from recent developments in molecular diagnostics, systemic treatments with new drugs and targeted therapies together with advanced technologies in the areas of radiology and radiation therapy. Our authors have analysed the literature and recommend treatments for rare cancers based on results from past studies. We hope that this book will be an aid to those treating rare cancer cases about which, up to now, little has been published, and will reassure our patients that they have not been forgotten.
