Book excerpt: This book deals broadly with tourism planning and development from the perspective of Croatia, a major Adriatic tourism destination which is fast becoming one of the most popular vacation spots in the European Union. With the recent accession of Croatia to the EU, Croatia is undergoing a rapid political and economic transition and generating scholarly interest in the country’s primary, secondary, and tertiary industries. This book examines the country’s long history and thriving success in the tourism industry through issues of destination image and identity, management challenges, economic impact, and how to attract tourists in the midst of extreme political changes. The book explores the implications of policy decisions on product development and takes a theoretically sound approach to destination planning and problem-solving in Croatia. Its timely view of Croatian national tourism policy and the broader Adriatic/Mediterranean region makes this book of interest to all scholars, students, and practitioners engaged in various aspects of destination development planning and management.

Book excerpt: The Iron Curtain, running from the Barents Sea to the Black Sea, divided Europe for almost 40 years and no activity was allowed in this "forbidden" zone. When it fell in 1989, it left a strip of land that runs the entire length of Europe and that has remained comparatively undisturbed - a green belt. The Green Belt initiative aims to integrate this entire strip of land with its key habitats and ecological areas as part of an international network of valuable ecosystems. This book provides background information on the initiative, reviews current activities in a number of case studies and looks at how the initiative can fit into current and future global efforts to protect European biodiversity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tourism is an important industry for Croatia. The amount of tourist arrivals and overnight stays in Croatia are significantly growing each year. The popularity of Croatia as a tourism destination for Dutch travellers has been growing as well. Currently, Croatia is the ninth most popular Mediterranean destination for Dutch travellers. Remarkably, although Croatian coastal regions, Istria and Dalmatia, are often visited by Dutch travellers, the vast majority of Dutch travellers visiting Croatia are unfamiliar with the Croatian coastal region Kvarner, which is located between Istria and Dalmatia. Therefore, the purpose of this thesis is as following: To investigate whether the Kvarner region has the potential to attract more Dutch travellers visiting Croatia in order to provide recommendations for the Croatian NTO and the RTO of Kvarner. In order to research the potential of Kvarner regarding Dutch travellers visiting Croatia, the following research questions have been developed: - What does Kvarner have to offer as a tourism destination? - What is the positioning of Kvarner by the Croatian NTO and Kvarner's RTO? - What is the profile of Dutch travellers visiting Croatia? - Does thetourism offer of Kvarner match with the preferences of Dutch travellers visiting Croatia"

Book excerpt: Placemaking has become a key concept in many disciplines. Due to an increase in digitization, mobilities, migration and rapid changes to the urban environments, it is important to learn how planning and social experts practice it in different contexts. Placemaking in Practice provides an inventory of practices, reflecting on different issues related to placemaking from a pan European perspective. It brings different cases, perspectives, and results analysed under the same purpose, to advance knowledge on placemaking, the actors engaged and results for people. It is backed by an intensive review of recent literature on placemaking, engagement, methods and activism results - towards developing a new placemaking agenda. Placemaking in Practice combines theory, methodology, methods (including digital ones) and their application in a pan-European context and imbedded into a relevant historical context. Book excerpt: Inland fisheries are important sources of ecosystem services contributing to human diet, health, well-being and economies. The evaluation of the importance and value of inland fisheries is one of the biggest challenges for its development. To develop the inland fisheries data collection, we reviewed the current status of data collection in European countries and provided five detailed country examples. The specific country examples give detailed description of data collection, focusing on: 1) country-wide postal survey (Finland) and 2) web-based survey and development of citizen science approach (Denmark). Example 3) from Ireland focuses on recreational salmonid fishing and conservation limits. There are two examples based on logbook returns: 4) one strict system, which is considered to work well (Czech Republic) and 5) one less controlled system, currently not producing reliable results, and under development (Croatia). Case studies were provided in each country example. Finally, the authors discuss the important aspects of inland fisheries data collection and review the methods to provide recommendations.

Book excerpt: "The United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (ECE) Environmental Performance Review Programme assesses progress made by individual countries in reconciling their economic and social development with environmental protection, as well as in meeting international commitments on environment and sustainable development. The Environmental Performance Review Programme assists countries to improve their environmental policies by making concrete recommendations for better policy design and implementation. Environmental Performance Reviews help to integrate environmental policies into sector-specific policies such as those in agriculture, energy, transport and health. Through the peer review process, the reviews promote dialogue among Governments about the effectiveness of environmental policies as well as the exchange of practical experience in implementing sustainable development and green economy initiatives. They also promote greater Government accountability to the public. The second Environmental Performance Review of Croatia examines the progress made by Croatia in the management of its environment since the country was first reviewed in 1999. The second review covers policymaking, planning, implementation and the financing of environmental policies and projects, as well as the protection of water resources, biodiversity and protected areas. It also looks into environmental considerations in the waste management and tourism."--Publisher description.
