Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pacific Island Countries have been shown to be especially vulnerable to such external influences as natural disasters, political unrest and downturns in the global economy and their tourism industries have been notably affected. In particular, they typically have a narrow resource base and a fragile and often vulnerable natural environment. While there is some research on islands and small states, there is a dearth of information on the South Pacific and very little research is being undertaken in the region compared to other geographical regions in the world. This volume brings together current work in Pacific Island tourism. In this collection, three main themes arise: Images of the South Pacific; Socio-economic Impacts of Tourism; and Pacific Island Countries and the Outside World. The first focus is on the question of image, namely, stereotypes of a destination held by tourists and potential tourists, the extent to which residents, for their part, really welcome visitors, and the role tourism might play in changing pre-established images. The second theme is tourism's impacts, notably the economic and socio-cultural effects of international tourism's intrusion in the region which, though often hotly debated, have attracted relatively little empirical research. The third focus is on the challenges of how PICs articulate with their external geo-political and physical environment. These involve existing relations with formal colonial centres, geographical isolation, the need for greater air access to the outside world and for more tourists, and the continuing threat to several PICs of global warming, which increased air travel will inevitably exacerbate. This text will be of interest to tourism students, researchers and academics in the fields of tourism, development studies and cultural studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Asia Pacific region’s enormous diversity of living cultures and preserved heritage sites has significant appeal to many tourists. However tourism has grown so rapidly that many issues associated with the incorporation of cultural and heritage experiences in tourist itineraries (such as authenticity verses commodification, exploitation of national cultures, impacts on local communities, and the management of heritage resources) have not been adequately addressed and must be debated. This revealing book reviews recent developments in cultural and heritage tourism in the Asia Pacific region and provides a discussion on how communities have faced and overcome significant challenges to develop and market their culture and heritage resources. A range of models and case studies are used to deepen the reader’s understanding of heritage and cultural issues, to illustrate many of the more controversial issues, and to examine new evaluative, and planning tools. This book is a special issue of the Asia Pacific Journal of Tourism Research.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tourism is vital to the economies of most Pacific nations and as such is an important site for the meaningful production of shared and disputed cultural values and practices. This is especially the case when tourism intersects with other important arenas for cultural production, both directly and indirectly. Touring Pacific Cultures captures the central importance of tourism to the visual, material and performed cultures of the Pacific region. In this volume, we propose to explore new directions in understanding how culture is defined, produced, experienced and sustained through tourism-related practices across that region. We ask, how is cultural value, ownership, performance and commodification negotiated and experienced in actual lived practice as it moves with people across the Pacific? ‘This collection is a welcome addition to tourism studies, or perhaps we should say post- or para-tourism. The essays bring out many facets and experiences too quickly bundled under a single label and focused exclusively on “destinations” visited by “outsiders”. Tourism, we see here, actively involves many different populations, societies, and economies, a range of local/global/regional engagements that can be both destructive and creative. Western outsiders aren’t the only ones on the move. Unequal power, (neo)colonial exploitation and capitalist commodification are very much part of the picture. But so are desire, adventure, pleasure, cultural reinvention and economic development. The effect, overall, is an attitude of alert, critical ambivalence with respect to a proliferating historical phenomenon. A bumpy and rewarding ride.’ — James Clifford, Professor Emeritus, University of California, Santa Cruz

Book excerpt: This multidisciplinary volume dicusses the impact of tourism on sustainable development in the Caribbean, the Pacific, and the Mediterranean. Bringing together scholars, development practitioners, international experts, and professionals, the contributors discuss the issues from a holistic and transnational perspective. This work provides a much-needed, thorough understanding of the interplay among economic, cultural, environmental, and public health parameters. The contributors provide a workable definition of sustainable development that can be understood, conveyed, and implemented by policy makers, development practitioners, and tourism professionals. Among the special issues addressed here are the role of women in tourism, the contradictions inherent in cultural tourism, the hegemony of tour operators, disease mapping and risk assessment, and island community involvement in tourism-related land-use planning.

This report provides an in-depth analysis of domestic tourism in 16 Asian countries highlighting its crucial contribution to the socio-economic development of one of the fastest growing tourism regions in the world. The study comprises four major components: a country profile, case studies, domestic tourism data and detailed recommendations for the development of domestic tourism. With contributions from the academia, public officials and tourism professionals, this study aims to serve as practical guide for a more holistic and sustainable approach to the development of domestic tourism and a useful groundwork for further research into the topic of domestic tourism in Asia and the Pacific and in other regions.

Book excerpt: The expansion of international tourism is changing the relationship between ethnic groups and states around the globe. Yet tourism’s importance for the understanding of ethnicity in the modern world has been generally neglected within the field of ethnic studies. This pioneering volume investigates how international tourism development, state policies of ethnic management, and the active responses of local ethnic groups intersect to reshape ethnic identities and ethnic relations in Asian and Pacific societies. It analyzes the ways in which the very meaning of ethnicity and culture are being contested and reworked in the wake of tourism’s impact. Following an introduction that explores the close but often ambivalent relationship between tourism promotion and state ethnic policies, individual contributors examine tourism’s varied effects in China, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, and the island Pacific in rich ethnographic detail.

Book excerpt: Marketing Issues in Pacific Area Tourism exposes researchers, tourism professionals, and students to the complexities of marketing issues in the most dynamic region in world tourism today. Dispelling commonly held Western assumptions, inviting new research, and stressing the importance of tourism development in this area to the economics of world tourism, this book shows you how and why this region has experienced such tremendous growth. Some of the larger countries you learn about include China, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan, and Thailand. Since many of these countries are becoming not only generators of tourist demand but also new tourist receiving areas, this book covers both inbound and outbound markets. By discussing the opportunities and challenges facing tourism marketing professionals and researchers in the Pacific area, Marketing Issues in Pacific Area Tourism helps improve your effectiveness and understanding of conducting business in the Pacific region. Some of the factors you read about include: the increasing wealth and consumerism of a rapidly growing middle class in the Pacific area the relaxation of international travel restrictions how formerly insular governments of the region are awakening to the possibility of tourism. the potential impediments to sustainable tourism development in the region Marketing Issues in Pacific Area Tourism also helps you improve survey design and interpretation by stressing the importance of understanding the heterogenous nature of Asian culture when analyzing tourist behavior and motivation. It provides a different perspective of Pacific Region tourism, concentrating on the clash of culture between those of the region and a dominant Western way of doing business. Another valuable feature of this book is the presentation of a continuing and improving database from which to assess destination performance and visitor characteristics--thus allowing researchers to further identify important marketing opportunities and issues.
