Book excerpt: A Choice Outstanding Academic Title Alternate attendance (sankin kotai) was one of the central institutions of Edo-period (1603-1868) Japan and one of the most unusual examples of a system of enforced elite mobility in world history. It required the daimyo to divide their time between their domains and the city of Edo, where they waited upon the Tokugawa shogun. Based on a prodigious amount of research in both published and archival primary sources, Tour of Duty renders alternate attendance as a lived experience, for not only the daimyo but also the samurai retainers who accompanied them. Beyond exploring the nature of travel to and from the capital as well as the period of enforced bachelorhood there, Constantine Vaporis elucidates-for the first time-the significance of alternate attendance as an engine of cultural, intellectual, material, and technological exchange. Vaporis argues against the view that cultural change simply emanated from the center (Edo) and reveals more complex patterns of cultural circulation and production taking place between the domains and Edo and among distant parts of Japan. What is generally known as "Edo culture" in fact incorporated elements from the localities. In some cases, Edo acted as a nexus for exchange; at other times, culture traveled from one area to another without passing through the capital. As a result, even those who did not directly participate in alternate attendance experienced a world much larger than their own. Vaporis begins by detailing the nature of the trip to and from the capital for one particular large-scale domain, Tosa, and its men and goes on to analyze the political and cultural meanings of the processions of the daimyo and their extensive entourages up and down the highways. These parade-like movements were replete with symbolic import for the nature of early modern governance. Later chapters are concerned with the physical and social environment experienced by the daimyo's retainers in Edo; they also address the question of who went to Edo and why, the network of physical spaces in which the domainal samurai lived, the issue of staffing, political power, and the daily lives and consumption habits of retainers. Finally, Vaporis examines retainers as carriers of culture, both in a literal and a figurative sense. In doing so, he reveals the significance of travel for retainers and their identity as consumers and producers of culture, thus proposing a multivalent model of cultural change.

A far more involved, gratifying and responsible occupation than I had initially imagined, or perhaps even the public realizes. At the tender age of twenty one, I was charged with the working understanding of the law and its enforcement, as well as aspects of training given to legal scholars, doctors, attorneys and psychiatrists. All in order that we could make life or death decisions within split seconds, with only a high school education to qualify us at the time. During my twenty five years, I had personal friends killed and injured in uniform and plainclothes, both on and off duty, while trying to enforce the law. I arrested three armed holdup subjects, purse snatchers, countless thieves, and an unknown number of routine arrests during my uniform and car duties. I witnessed the smoke and broken glass shattered in the streets of Baltimore during the 1968 Riots. My town was a blaze and looked like a war zone. In 1970 I had the privilege to serve in the elite Homicide Division with some great people. Their expertise, dedication and tenacity directed and assisted in numerous successful case conclusions. During which time I investigated homicides committed in every possible manner for what ever reason, including a serial murderer who dismembered his victims, a arson homicide that was unintended, as well as a residential killing that lead to cab holdups and murders. I witnessed remarkable acts of courage and sacrifice by both uniformed and plainclothes personnel. In this book I have attempted to relate personal stories and events in an effort to enlighten the general public's awareness to the responsibilities, duties, sacrifices and the professionalism of our police. He has been assigned to first platoon, Delta Company, 1/52 Battalion, 198th Infantry Brigade, Americal Division of the Military Assistance Command, Vietnam (MACV).Maxwell begins writing about what life in the field, in the "bush", is like. He doesn't consciously set out to write a journal but that's what it turns into as day after day he finds himself with more time on his hands than he can use in any other way. He also writes letters and reads quite a bit. The story is a mesh of funny incidents, sudden tragedies and details which interest Maxwell, details such as how the Vietnamese people live, what the country looks and feels like and how his fellow soldiers think and react in various situations. As month after month passes, Maxwell evolves from FNG (Fucking New Guy) to field wise veteran. In early October he's surprised to hear of the plane crash in Colorado which killed the entire Wichita State football team. He relearns what he always knew, that death, unfair death happens in the "world" (the United States) too. In November, Maxwell's platoon is treated to some homemade whiskey by a papasan in whose hooch they are staying. They have a great time in this village and even take up a collection of extra c-rations to give to a girl who lives in the village who's to marry a local VC as soon as Maxwell's platoon clears out the area. Most of the guys in Maxwell's platoon hold no hard feelings towards the Viet Cong or the Vietnamese villagers.Finally, in late December, Maxwell receives orders to report to Chu Lai for a job in the headquarters of his battalion. The war is over for him and he leaves the "bush" behind him the same way all the soldiers who have gone before him have, alone.
