Book excerpt: Be In That Number is a year-long memoir of Tottenham Hotspur's 2018/19 season, told through the eyes and voices of their supporters' clubs around the world, as a growing global fanbase share their own devotion to a football club hundreds or even thousands of miles away. 2018/19 was supposed to mark Tottenham's long-awaited return home to N17 and the dawn of a bright new era under one of football's most coveted managers. What followed was an extended stay at Wembley, a wholly unexpected run to the Champions League Final and - eventually - the departure of the man many expected to remain at the helm for years to come. Derbyshire-born comedian and author Carl Jones recounts his own experience as a matchgoing Tottenham fan of 25 years as he meets the chairman of LA Spurs who would catch up on Spurs results by waiting for a newspaper to hit the stands in the early hours of the morning, the Lebanese student who smashes plates to deal with his emotions while watching matches and the Icelandic fan who plans to walk down the aisle to When The Spurs Go Marching In. He speaks to a Malaysian fan who met his best friend in a public bathroom after spotting a Tottenham pin badge on his lapel, the Chairman of OzSpurs who moved 'down under' for love and finally felt at home when meeting Tottenham fans in his adopted nation and the founder of Punjabi Spurs who formed his supporters' club to bring unity through football - despite being brought up in a houseful of Manchester United fans! On the pitch, Tottenham thrill and disappoint in equal measure as they eventually return home, before an incredible night at the Etihad, an unforgettable comeback in Amsterdam and a bittersweet night in Madrid cap off an unforgettable season and the beginning of the end for Pochettino. Critical praise for Be In That Number "Carl Jones reveals the huge extended Spurs family around the world and shows us what's it like to support the famous Lilywhites. Informative, hilarious and moving it's a rip roaring page turner for all Spurs fans." - Mike Leigh, The Spurs Show

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: European Football in Black and White offers an engaging interpretation of a disturbing phenomenon in Europe's favorite sport: football violence fueled by racism. While many fans across Europe have used football to further destructive ethnocentric agendas, there are also pan-European initiatives in the football stadium to combat the almost endemic problem. Christos Kassimeris analyzes political ideologies that have influenced football supporters, drawing attention to the increasing politicization of football and the footballization of politics. He also considers the contributions of nationalism, social class, and media coverage before assessing attempts by various groups, from the Football Against Racism in Europe (FARE) network to the European Union, to rectify the problem. Ultimately, he concludes that football needs to be dissociated from both racism and politics for the sport to flourish. Unlike more traditional attempts to explain football violence and racism, this book seeks to establish a Europe-wide as well as a national explanatory framework for racism from a political perspective. This study will draw the interest not only of scholars across the humanities and social sciences, but also of ordinary football supporters. Book jacket.

This book was released on 2011-07-20 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "At over 100,000 words, The Return of King Kenny is the most comprehensive guide yet published to Liverpool Football Club's 2010-2011 season, arguably the most tumultuous of any in the club's history. The previous lacklustre year had ended with the sacking of Rafael Benitez, which led the author of this book to believe that things could only get worse... Of course, Benitez was replaced by Roy Hodgson, who had achieved the phenomenal feat of getting Fulham to the 2010 UEFA Europa League final. To his credit, Oliver had doubts from the start that Roy Hodgson could successfully make the step up to a bigger club such as Liverpool FC, and Oliver's ideal appointment at this time would have been a certain 'King Kenny'... Yet Liverpool were still owned by Tom Hicks and George Gillett, who were certainly not a "safe pair of hands", as under their stewardship, Liverpool FC came dangerously close to the brink of administration... Oliver Smith cuts through the broken promises, the bluster, and the red tape to provide a scintillating account of the events that could have wrecked Liverpool FC forever. With the stunning purchase of Liverpool FC by John W. Henry's New England Sports Ventures (NESV), Oliver was finally able to detect a little bit of that "golden sky' so promised by the Kop's famous anthem. However, with Liverpool FC having the worst start to the season since the 50s, with an accompanying drop into the Premier League relegation zone, more drama was to come, culminating in the crowning of a legendary Anfield hero as King..."--

This compelling book tells the inside story of the double-winning campaign through extensive interviews with players, directors, managers, and fans. Like Hunter Davies' ground-breaking The Glory Game, this is more than just a book about one club. It describes the golden age of the game at the dawn of the 1960s.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gary Lineker is a former English professional footballer who spent most of his career playing as a striker for Leicester City, Everton, Barcelona, Tottenham Hotspur, and Nagoya Grampus Eight. Born in Leicester in 1960, Lineker started his football career at the age of 16 when he joined his hometown club Leicester City. He quickly rose through the ranks, making his first-team debut in 1979 and scoring his first goal in the same match. Over the next few years, Lineker established himself as one of Leicester's most talented players and was eventually named their player of the year in 1983. After a successful season with Leicester, Lineker was sold to Everton for a then-British transfer record fee of £800,000. He performed outstandingly for Everton, leading the team to win the FA Cup in 1984 and to become the league's top scorer in the following season. After three seasons at Everton, Lineker was sold to Barcelona where he continued his impressive goal-scoring form, scoring 42 goals in 103 appearances. In 1989, Lineker returned to England to join Tottenham Hotspur where he remained until his retirement in 1994. Apart from his successful club career, Lineker also had a glittering international career with the England national team, scoring 48 goals in 80 appearances. After retiring from football, Lineker has worked as a television presenter and pundit.
