Book excerpt: Excerpt from Total Dietary Regulation in the Treatment of Diabetes A therapeutic advance should mean a raising of the general level of clinical results, in the sense of saving life in some proportion of cases formerly fatal, and prolonging it to greater or less extent in the more hopeless cases. Expectations of an actual cure, in the sense of a restoration of the normal power of food assimilation, will necessarily be disappointed in most cases under any dietetic treatment, and the need of some more potent therapy than diet is a keen stimulus to research. The method of treatment here presented has never been proposed as such a cure, and amelioration of the existing condition and preservation of life and usefulness at the price of continued pre cautions have been recognized as the limit of present attainment in diabetes. As set forth in the text, the mistakes incident to the development of a new method have reduced the general results below the theoretical ideal. The severity of the test is evident, however, from the grave character of the cases chosen and their known fate under former practice. The experience as a whole is believed to sus tain both the theoretical principle and its practical value for the dietetic treatment of diabetes. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The prevalence of diabetes is on the increase in the UK and worldwide, partly due to changes in lifestyle which predispose individuals to overweight and obesity. It is estimated that about 90% of the currently diagnosed adults have type 2 diabetes, and based on the World Health Organisation (WHO) report, about 422 million adults were living with diabetes in 2014 compared with 108 million in 1980; this condition caused about 1.5 million deaths in 2012. In the United States of America, it is estimated that about 30.3 million adults are living with diabetes, with a further 1.5 million new diabetes cases diagnosed every year, representing an increasing prevalence of this condition. Diabetes represents a major public health challenge, despite advances in technology and the pharmaceutical industry. These problems may be in the form of acute or long-term complications. Therefore, in order to attenuate the problems of diabetes, management strategies usually include lifestyle changes such as increased physical activity and dietary interventions. Studies which evaluate the role of nutrition in the management of type 2 diabetes often involve human and animal models as these approaches enable us to have a broader and more in-depth understanding of the condition. In some cases, diabetes may co-exist with other conditions, such as stroke, and these may present unique challenges with regard to nutritional interventions. This Special Issue aims to evaluate the risk factors associated with type 2 diabetes and the role of the diet in the management of people with this condition. This evidence is drawn from both human and animal studies.

Book excerpt: "It is, of course, too early to say how far reaching and how permanent the effects of such a diet will be in the severe and in the milder cases of diabetes. All we can say is that thus far it appears to work admirably well. To all who wish to give their patients the benefit of this treatment I can heartily recommend this book." -Richard C. Cabot, M.D., 1916 "This book furnishes to the general practitioner in compact form the details of the latest treatment....It presents the clinical application of the work done in recent years by Dr. Allen at Harvard and The Rockefeller Institute. This method of treatment, carried out by Dr. Allen at The Rockefeller Hospital, and by the staff at the Massachusetts General Hospital, has proved very successful. To all who have been tried by this baffling disease, this little volume, with its description of treatment, tests and diets, will be of great service." -Southern California Practitioner "One of the greatest advances ever made in the therapeutics of this disease. The physician who expects to give his diabetic patients the benefit of this new method of treatment must have a good and clear idea of it himself. In this little volume he can get all the data he would need for the successful management of his cases of diabetes with the so-called 'Allen' treatment.'" -The Journal of the Indiana State Medical Association "This work can be heartily recommended as a complete and reliable guide in the Allen treatment of diabetes." -Northwest Medicine "The Allen treatment has definitely proved its worth in the difficult problem of the treatment of diabetes and the satisfactory prosecution of the treatment can be reached only when the patient is possessed of at least much of the information which is to be found in this book. It is probably not too much to say that every diabetic should own and study this book and many physicians can profit by its use." -Medical Record "The fact that this little volume is now in its third edition only two years after its first appearance is indicative of the reception given it by the medical profession. Such a reception was quite deserved, for the book is a very valuable guide to the proper conduct of Allen's revolutionary treatment of diabetes. The great drawback of this form of treatment has been the difficulty encountered in the proper adjustment of the diets after the initial period of starvation and the present volume relieves the practitioner of much of this difficulty by giving him an extensive series of very carefully worked out diets, sufficient to cover almost every need that might arise. The individual diets are presented serially, much in the order in which they would probably be used in a given case....Each diet is arranged for all of the meals of the day; the amount of each food is stated in terms of grams of weight as well as in domestic measures, and the protein, fat, and carbohydrate content is given along with the total caloric value. I addition to the diets, the book contains several illustrative case records to make clear the modes of application of the treatment, a short review of the several approved laboratory tests which must be carried out frequently in every case, a chapter of tested recipes, one on food values and a summary of analyses of the protein and carbohydrate contents of a number of diabetic foods. In brief, the authors have succeeded in covering the subject of the starvation treatment of diabetes from its practical side in an adequate, concise, and thoroughly utilitarian way." -International Record of Medicine and General Practice Clinics

Book excerpt: As the number of patients with diabetes increases annually, it is not surprising that the number of patients with diabetes who are admitted to the hospital also increases. Once in the hospital, patients with diabetes or hyperglycemia may be admitted to the Intensive Care Unit, require urgent or elective surgery, enteral or parenteral nutrition, intravenous insulin infusion, or therapies that significantly impact glycemic control (e.g., steroids). Because many clinical outcomes are influenced by the degree of glycemic control, knowledge of the best practices in inpatient diabetes management is extremely important. The field of inpatient management of diabetes and hyperglycemia has grown substantially in the last several years. This body of knowledge is summarized in this book, so it can reach the audience of hospitalists, endocrinologists, nurses and other team members who take care of hospitalized patients with diabetes and hyperglycemia.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: FROM NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLING AUTHOR DR. JASON FUNG • “The doctor who invented intermittent fasting.” —The Daily Mail “Dr. Fung reveals how [type 2 diabetes] can be prevented and also reversed using natural dietary methods instead of medications … This is an important and timely book. Highly recommended.” —Dr. Mark Hyman, author of The Pegan Diet “Dr. Jason Fung has done it again. … Get this book!” —Dr. Steven R. Gundry, author of The Plant Paradox Everything you believe about treating type 2 diabetes is wrong. Today, most doctors, dietitians, and even diabetes specialists consider type 2 diabetes to be a chronic and progressive disease—a life sentence with no possibility of parole. But the truth, as Dr. Fung reveals in this groundbreaking book, is that type 2 diabetes is reversible. Writing with clear, persuasive language, Dr. Fung explains why conventional treatments that rely on insulin or other blood-glucose-lowering drugs can actually exacerbate the problem, leading to significant weight gain and even heart disease. The only way to treat type 2 diabetes effectively, he argues, is proper dieting and intermittent fasting—not medication. “The Diabetes Code is unabashedly provocative yet practical ... a clear blueprint for everyone to take control of their blood sugar, their health, and their lives.”—Dr. Will Cole, author of Intuitive Fasting
