Book excerpt: This book is a sweeping historical survey of the origins, development and nature of state power. It demonstrates that Eurasia is home to a dominant tradition of arbitrary rule mediated through military, civil and ecclesiastical servants and a marginal tradition of representative and responsible government through autonomous institutions. The former tradition finds expression in hierarchically organized and ideologically legitimated continental bureaucratic states while the latter manifests itself in the state of laws. In recent times, the marginal tradition has gained in popularity and has led to continental bureaucratic states attempting to introduce democratic and constitutional reforms. These attempts have rarely altered the actual manner in which power is exercised by the state and its elites given the deeper and historically rooted experience of arbitrary rule. Far from being remote, the arbitrary culture of power that emerged in many parts of the world continues to shape the fortunes of states. To ignore this culture of power and the historical circumstances that have shaped it comes at a high price, as indicated by the ongoing democratic recession and erosion of liberal norms within states that are democracies.

Book excerpt: "Binged Making a Murderer? Try . . . [this] riveting portrait of a tragic, preventable crime." --Entertainment Weekly Finalist for the Edgar Award for Best Fact Crime Finalist for the Dayton Literary Peace Prize A Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter's gripping account of one young man's path to murder--and a wake-up call for mental health care in America On a summer night in 2009, three lives intersected in one American neighborhood. Two people newly in love--Teresa Butz and Jennifer Hopper, who spent many years trying to find themselves and who eventually found each other--and a young man on a dangerous psychological descent: Isaiah Kalebu, age twenty-three, the son of a distant, authoritarian father and a mother with a family history of mental illness. All three paths forever altered by a violent crime, all three stories a wake-up call to the system that failed to see the signs. In this riveting, probing, compassionate account of a murder in Seattle, Eli Sanders, who won a Pulitzer Prize for his newspaper coverage of the crime, offers a deeply reported portrait in microcosm of the state of mental health care in this country--as well as an inspiring story of love and forgiveness. Culminating in Kalebu's dangerous slide toward violence--observed by family members, police, mental health workers, lawyers, and judges, but stopped by no one--While the City Slept is the story of a crime of opportunity and of the string of missed opportunities that made it possible. It shows what can happen when a disturbed member of society repeatedly falls through the cracks, and in the tradition of The Other Wes Moore and The Short and Tragic Life of Robert Peace, is an indelible, human-level story, brilliantly told, with the potential to inspire social change.

Book excerpt: “I know it’s wrong, but I can’t help it with you.” Brig- After being disowned by my family, I struck out on my own. I landed in a new city, far away from everything I’d ever known. Creating a new life was hard, but I found a job in a bookstore I loved. For years I hid behind books, afraid to discover what life had to offer. But, in the blink of an eye, my dream job vanished. Fate intervened, and a handsome, successful restaurateur hired me as his personal assistant. Day after day I worked with Fernando, while the heat between us grew smoldering hot. The attraction was immediate, and when I spied on him skinny dipping in his pool, I almost gave in to temptation. But I needed to keep this job. Instead of giving in to my urges, I stuffed them deep inside. Until one day I couldn’t keep my secret crush inside any longer. Fernando- For twenty years I worked my fingers to the bone. As a result, I now owned a chain of successful, upscale restaurants, and had an enormous bank balance. It only had one drawback, one that I never expected. I was lonely, and for the first time in my life, wondered if I had done the right thing by ignoring my heart. When I first met my new personal assistant, there was an instant connection. His deep, green eyes reassured me when I felt lost, and soon I wanted more from him than a boss/employee relationship. Brig was younger than me, and I couldn’t imagine he’d ever want to take our professional relationship to a much more personal level. But when I saw one of my employees putting the make on him, I wanted to explode. Should I take a chance on Brig, or should I keep pretending that love didn’t matter? Missionary is a standalone novel about two men ignoring their hearts until they laid eyes on each other. This is the second edition of Missionary, and it has been substantially rewritten. Book excerpt: This expansive four-volume work gives students detailed explanations of Shakespeare's plays and poems and also covers his age, life, theater, texts, and language. Numerous excerpts from primary source historical documents contextualize his works, while reviews of productions chronicle his performance history and reception. Shakespeare's works often served to convey simple truths, but they are also complex, multilayered masterpieces. Shakespeare drew on varied sources to create his plays, and while the plays are sometimes set in worlds before the Elizabethan age, they nonetheless parallel and comment on situations in his own era. Written with the needs of students in mind, this four-volume set demystifies Shakespeare for today's readers and provides the necessary perspective and analysis students need to better appreciate the genius of his work. This indispensable ready reference examines Shakespeare's plots, language, and themes; his use of sources and exploration of issues important to his age; the interpretation of his works through productions from the Renaissance to the present; and the critical reaction to key questions concerning his writings. The book provides coverage of each key play and poems in discrete sections, with each section presenting summaries; discussions of themes, characters, language, and imagery; and clear explications of key passages. Readers will be able to inspect historical documents related to the topics explored in the work being discussed and view excerpts from Shakespeare's sources as well as reviews of major productions. The work also provides a comprehensive list of print and electronic resources suitable for student research.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'A Sheaf of Bluebells' is a novel by Baroness Orczy about the feuds between Royalists and the followers of Napoleon Bonaparte. The story unfolds as follows: French aristocrats exiled during the revolution have been presenting petitions to enable them to return to France under the conditional amnesty granted to them by the newly crowned Emperor. Amongst them are a petition signed by Madame la Marquise de Mortain and her son, Laurent (aged twenty-one years), and one signed by Monsieur le Comte de Courson for himself and his daughter, Fernande, who is Laurent's cousin and is promised in marriage to him. Napoleon, in a lenient mood, grants their return and allows them to retake possession of their chateaux and any remaining land that had not been sold by the State.
