Book excerpt: "This book presents a synthesis of published information on mountain pine beetle (Dendroctonus ponderosae Hopkins [Coleoptera: Scolytidae]) biology and management with an emphasis on lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta Dougl. ex Loud. var. latifolia Engelm.) forests of western Canada. Intended as a reference for researchers as well as forest managers, the book covers three main subject areas: mountain pine beetle biology, management, and socioeconomic concerns. The chapters on biology cover taxonomy, life history and habits, distribution, insect-host tree interactions, development and survival, epidemiology, and outbreak history. The management section covers management strategy, survey and detection, proactive and preventive management, and decision support tools. The chapters on socioeconomic aspects include an economic examination of management programs and the utilization of post-beetle salvage timber in solid wood, panelboard, pulp and paper products."--Publisher's description.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forest inventories throughout the world have evolved gradually over time. The content as well as the concepts and de?nitions employed are constantly adapted to the users’ needs. Advanced inventory systems have been established in many countries within Europe, as well as outside Europe, as a result of development work spanning several decades, in some cases more than 100 years. With continuously increasing international agreements and commitments, the need for information has also grown drastically, and reporting requests have become more frequent and the content of the reports wider. Some of the agreements made at the international level have direct impacts on national economies and international decisions, e. g. , the Kyoto Protocol. Thus it is of utmost importance that the forest information supplied is collected and analysed using sound scienti?c principles and that the information from different countries is comparable. European National Forest Inventory (NFI) teams gathered in Vienna in 2003 to discuss the new challenges and the measures needed to get data users to take full advantage of existing NFIs. As a result, the European National Forest Inventory Network (ENFIN), a network of NFIs, was established. The ENFIN members decided to apply for funding for meetings and collaborative activities. COST– European Cooperation in Science and Technology - provided the necessary ?n- cial means for the realization of the program.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The white pine weevil, Pissodes strobi Peck, can be found in nearly all regions of Canada and the U.S. It causes severe deformity and growth losses by damaging a tree's leader, which results in reduction of merchantable wood volume. These attacks threaten Sitka spruce plantings by the forest industry in B.C. In eastern Canada it limits the planting of eastern white pine and spruce. The goals of the White Pine Weevil Workshop were to consolidate current scientific knowledge and to map out a strategy for future research and funding requirements. 33 papers were presented on weevil research and management including biology and damage; genetics, weevils and hosts; and silviculture and control.

Book excerpt: Stand density management is the process of controlling tree density within a stand to achieve desired objectives. Stand density management practices include the spacing of planted trees, pre-commercial thinning, and commercial thinning. A sound density management prescription must consider three elements of prediction: biological responses of the stand to treatment, economic implications of the treatment, and forest-level effects of the treatment. This document provides essential information on each of these elements, and provides a structured decision process for making site-specific density management prescriptions. Sections of the document cover the biological concepts of timber production, economic principles of timber production, forest planning considerations, the decision process, and density management planning tools. Includes glossary.

Book excerpt: This guidebook shows how the distribution of common forest plants changes due to variations in climate, terrain, site, & soil conditions across the northern British Columbia wet-belt & subalpine zones. The guide covers over 120 plant species or species groups that occur in the northern montane spruce and the northern interior cedar-hemlock biogeoclimatic zones. For each species, an outline of species ecological information is presented along with a graph showing the predominant moisture & nutrient regimes where it will most likely occur. The information is arranged by category of plant: trees; shrubs; herbs, ferns, & dwarf shrubs; grasses & sedges; and mosses, liverworts, & lichens. The appendix includes identification keys to the common shrubs & herbs of the Prince George Forest Region and an index of common & scientific names.

The information, arranged first by category of plant (trees; shrubs; dwarf shrubs, herbs, & ferns; grasses & sedges; mosses, liverworts, & lichens) then by scientific name, is in the form of grids that depict the predominant moisture & nutrient regimes where a species will most likely occur in old or mature forests. Also included are notes on indicator values and habitat associations. Includes index of common & scientific names.
