Book excerpt: Torque and drag (T & D) modeling is regarded as extremely helpful in well planning because it helps to predict and prevent drilling problems that might occur during the drilling process. Although T & D software has existed since the 1990s, some confusion still exists over the validity of the models that are used to characterize drilling operations, especially as we extend the length of modern horizontal wells. Moreover, it seems that only minimal improvements have been made to the underlying mathematical models over the last two decades. For normal planning on extended-reach and other challenging wells, T & D modeling provides a guideline for performance. Better modeling is especially important in complex three-dimensional wellbores. To optimize well design, T & D modeling needs to be incorporated into the planning of each well. The following factors should be evaluated: - Optimizing the well planning design - Adapting casing or tubular designs - Changing annulus fluids; for example, oil-based mud lubricates are better than water-based mud - Adjusting operating drilling processes such as reducing sliding distances or rotating to the bottom This project develops software that will give more accurate 3D T & D calculations. Moreover, this research is also widely beneficial in handling wellbore tortuosity which is explained in detail in the text. The new software will optimize the wellbore path and assist significantly in torque and drag calculation in well design.

Book excerpt: As the industry extends its search for hydrocarbons in remote locations, efficient extended reach drilling operations become crucial to reaching subsurface targets. This starts with enhanced simulation and monitoring of real time data measurements. Torque and drag are two of the most important parameters that are monitored continuously throughout any oil and gas drilling operations. Where torque is defined as the force of rotation between the drill pipe and the wellbore wall and drag is defined as the force required to push or pull the drill pipe through the wellbore and formations. The two parameters are often used as indicators for downhole conditions and must be maintained within certain ranges to ensure successful drilling to the targeted depths and running in hole the required completion equipment. Prior to any drilling operation, an estimate of both torque and drag are calculated based on the known drilling fluid properties, and formation parameters. Which is then used as an indicator of drilling issues such as wellbore collapse, cuttings accumulation, and change in drilling fluid properties. Several analytical models are utilized for torque and drag calculation. The first, and widely used approach is the soft string model which assumes the drill pipe acts as soft string taking the shape of the wellbore. This assumption neglects additional forces that cause the drill pipe to bend in deviated locations, which often results in underestimating torque and drag measurements in complex well designs. To address this, a stiff string model was implemented which considers the pipe’s bending stiffness and its effects on torque and drag calculations. Additionally, finite elements analysis (FEA) has been implemented to validate torque and drag calculations throughout the industry. However, the application of FEA often includes mesh generations which creates a 3D model of the drill pipe and subdivides the object into smaller domains to perform the calculations across the entire volume. This approach typically requires special software or large computational power to perform the calculations in a timely manner for real time monitoring applications. This thesis presents an approach to FEA that utilizes the Euler-Bernoulli beam equations, with the addition of an axial forces component to address both axial and transverse forces and deformations. The outcome of this thesis provides an accurate representation of torque and drag calculations, performed efficiently which could be used for planning, and real time monitoring during drilling operations

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Completely up to date and the most thorough and comprehensive reference work and learning tool available for drilling engineering, this groundbreaking volume is a must-have for anyone who works in drilling in the oil and gas sector. Petroleum and natural gas still remain the single biggest resource for energy on earth. Even as alternative and renewable sources are developed, petroleum and natural gas continue to be, by far, the most used and, if engineered properly, the most cost-effective and efficient, source of energy on the planet. Drilling engineering is one of the most important links in the energy chain, being, after all, the science of getting the resources out of the ground for processing. Without drilling engineering, there would be no gasoline, jet fuel, and the myriad of other "have to have" products that people use all over the world every day. Following up on their previous books, also available from Wiley-Scrivener, the authors, two of the most well-respected, prolific, and progressive drilling engineers in the industry, offer this groundbreaking volume. They cover the basic tenets of drilling engineering, the most common problems that the drilling engineer faces day to day, and cutting-edge new technology and processes through their unique lens. Written to reflect the new, changing world that we live in, this fascinating new volume offers a treasure of knowledge for the veteran engineer, new hire, or student. This book is an excellent resource for petroleum engineering students, reservoir engineers, supervisors & managers, researchers and environmental engineers for planning every aspect of rig operations in the most sustainable, environmentally responsible manner, using the most up-to-date technological advancements in equipment and processes.

Book excerpt: This book describes fundamental upscaling aspects of single-phase/two-phase porous media flow for application in petroleum and environmental engineering. Many standard texts have been written about this subject. What distinguishes this work from other available books is that it covers fundamental issues that are frequently ignored but are relevant for developing new directions to extend the traditional approach, but with an eye on application. Our dependence on fossil energy is 80–90% and is only slowly decreasing. Of the estimated 37 (~40) Gton/year, anthropogenic emissions of about 13 Gton/year of carbon dioxide remain in the atmosphere. An Exergy Return on Exergy Invested analysis shows how to obtain an unbiased quantification of the exergy budget and the carbon footprint. Thus, the intended audience of the book learns to quantify his method of optimization of recovery efficiencies supported by spreadsheet calculations. As to single-phase-one component fluid transport, it is shown how to deal with inertia, anisotropy, heterogeneity and slip. Upscaling requires numerical methods. The main application of transient flow is to find the reasons for reservoir impairment. The analysis benefits from solving the porous media flow equations using (numerical) Laplace transforms. The multiphase flow requires the definition of capillary pressure and relative permeabilities. When capillary forces dominate, we have dispersed (Buckley-Leverett flow). When gravity forces dominate, we obtain segregated flow (interface models). Miscible flow is described by a convection-dispersion equation. We give a simple proof that the dispersion coefficient can be approximated by Gelhar's relation, i.e., the product of the interstitial velocity, the variance of the logarithm of the permeability field and a correlation length. The book will appeal mostly to students and researchers of porous media flow in connection with environmental engineering and petroleum engineering.
