Book excerpt: Due to the kinematic and dynamic simplifications possible because of the large mass of heavy quark bound states, certain properties of these systems can be quantitatively analyzed within the framework of quantum chromodynamics. It is clear that dimensionally the size of the bound state is proportional to the inverse quark mass, and for very heavy quarkonia the radius of the system should become smaller than that of normal hadrons. When this small system interacts with external long wavelength field quanta, the natural expansion that results is of a multipole type, analogous to the familiar multipole expansion in electrodynamics. This multipole expansion has better convergence properties than the standard perturbative treatment in certain kinematic regimes, which opens up a new area for strong interaction physics calculations. More specifically, it is ideally suited to investigate soft non-perturbative effects in QCD which appear to be so crucial to present day phenomenology and the conjectured confinement mechanism.

Book Synopsis The Theory of Quark and Gluon Interactions by : F. J. Ynduráin
Download or read book The Theory of Quark and Gluon Interactions written by F. J. Ynduráin and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book features a unified presentation of the theory of quarks and gluons. Included are perturbative aspects, such as deep inelastic scattering, jets, Drell-Yan scattering, and exclusive processes, and nonperturbative aspects, such as current algebra and PCAC techniques, and instantons, together with an introduction to lattice QCD. Additional topics, for example, QCD sum rules and the quark model of hadrons, are also to be found. The emphasis is on detailed calculations and results that can be tested against experiment. The aim is to bring readers to the point where they can start to work on their own, as well as to give a comprehensive idea of the quality of the theory. Some of the subjects are presented for the first time in book form; indeed a few are totally new. Among these are a full discussion of relativistic and nonperturbative corrections to heavy quark bound states, the interpretation of K factors, and some aspects of jet physics. The book is ideally suited as a textbook for graduate students in nuclear and particle physics, but owing to the many recent results it will also be appreciated by researchers in these fields.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1983, this book has become a classic among advanced textbooks. The new fourth edition maintains the high standard of its predecessors. The book offers basic knowledge of field theory and particle phenomenology. The author presents the basic facts of quark and gluon physics in pedagogical form. Explanations of theory are supported throughout with experimental findings. The text provides readers with sufficient understanding to follow modern research articles. This fourth edition presents a new section on heavy quark effective theories, more material on lattice QCD and on chiral perturbation theory.
Book Synopsis Heavy Quarks in Effective Field Theories by : Ambar Jain
Download or read book Heavy Quarks in Effective Field Theories written by Ambar Jain and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Heavy quark physics serves as a probe to understand QCD, measure standard model parameters, and look for signs of new physics. We study several aspects of heavy quark systems in an effective field theory framework, including both phenomenological and formal applications. Phenomenological applications include the leading calculation of penguin amplitudes in charmless non-leptonic B-decays to light mesons, including power suppressed effects that are numerically enhanced by the chiral condensate. We compare our determination of the penguin amplitudes with the experimental results. Also, we calculate the heavy quark jet function at two loops, which is an important ingredient for the next-to-next-to-leading-log invariant-mass distribution of jets induced by tt pair production at a future linear collider. Formal applications include: a definition of top mass relevant for measurements that use top induced jets, a new renormalization group equation in an infrared scale intrinsic to heavy quark masses and its generalization for QCD matrix elements, a threshold mass definition which smoothly connects to the MS mass, and a new method to analyze renormalons in the operator product expansion.
Book Synopsis Hadron Physics 96: Topics On The Structure And Interaction Of Hadronic Systems - Proceedings Of The International Workshop by : Erasmo Ferreira

This book was released on 1997-05-05 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of QCD in the confinement regime poses some of the most difficult problems of fundamental physics at present. The mechanism of confinement is not yet understood, and it is hard to investigate the properties of the fundamental theory in the determination of the structures and interactions of hadronic systems. As a consequence of these difficulties, the frontier between effective and fundamental theories has been intensively investigated in the last few years, and progress has been achieved in several directions. The 'Hadron Physics' workshop gathered together experts who have been taking the lead in these developments in recent years. Four sets of lectures were presented, providing a pedagogical and updated basis that gives support to research work in frontier problems. This book puts together the main current methods in the study of the properties of hadrons. The perspective of future developments based on different approaches can then be more clearly perceived.

Book Synopsis Quark Dynamics and Constituent Masses in Heavy Quark Systems by : Nicholas Souchlas
Download or read book Quark Dynamics and Constituent Masses in Heavy Quark Systems written by Nicholas Souchlas and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: QCD is considered as the theory for the description of strong interaction between quark and gluons. Due to the nature of the gauge field, perturbative techniques cannot be applied to study long distance physics where some of the most important phenomena, like Dynamical Chiral Symmetry Breaking (DCSB) and quark and gluon confinement is realized. QCD's Dyson-Schwinger equations (DSE) framework and the Maris-Tandy effective kernel, containing phenomenology at large distance, have been successfully used to study light quark meson properties. Our goal here is to extend its use and study heavy quark mesons via calculated masses and electroweak decay constants. Differences in light-heavy and heavy-heavy quark systems are investigated. We explore the role of the infrared part of the effective kernel with increasing quark mass. Deviations from a constituent-like behavior for the heavy quark propagator were investigated within this framework. Some of these results might be related to Brodsky and Shrock's suggestion of a universal maximum wavelength of quarks and gluons in hadrons.
