Book excerpt: In this thesis we use supersymmetry and the gauge-gravity duality to shed light on some dynamical features of strongly-coupled non-Abelian gauge theories. In the first half of the thesis, we consider singular superpotentials of four dimensional N=1 supersymmetric QCD and show that they must exist. In particular, using some non-trivial consistency checks, we show that these superpotentials, albeit singular, are perfectly sensible, and can be used to reproduce in a simple way both the low energy effective dynamics as well as some special higher-derivative terms. In the second half of the thesis, we investigate the behavior of timelike, spacelike and Euclidean stationary string configurations on a five-dimensional AdS black hole background which, in the context of the gauge-gravity duality, correspond to quark-antiquark pairs steadily moving in an N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills thermal bath. We find that there are many branches of solutions depending on the quark velocity and separation as well as on whether Euclidean or Lorentzian configurations are examined. Such solutions can, in principle, be used to determine some transport properties of strongly-coupled N=4 thermal bath.

Book excerpt: "The gauge/gravity duality is extensively studied in recent years, as well as itsapplications to large N QCD and condensed matter physics. In this thesis, we studythe gravity duals of three different gauge theories. The first gauge theory has N = 1supersymmetry and is conformal, we study the spectrum on its gravity dual solution,i.e., the supergravity modes in anti de Sitter (AdS) space on a 5D Sasaki-Einsteinmanifold Y p,q. The second gauge theory has running couplings and is not conformal. We study the geometric transition as it happens at the far infrared region, whichis at the bottom of the cascading RG flow, between resolved conifold with wrappedD5 branes and deformed conifold with only fluxes but no branes. Lastly, we try tofind the gravity dual of a certain finite temperature gauge theory which is neitherconformal nor supersymmetric." --

Book excerpt: Over the past 14 years, the Anti-de Sitter (AdS)/Conformal Field Theory (CFT) correspondence and its generalization in the ideas of gauge/gravity duality have had a profound impact in our understanding of strongly interacting quantum field theories. Roughly speaking, the correspondence maps the degrees of freedom of a $d$-dimensional quantum field theory in the strong coupling regime to weakly coupled string theory (gravity or supergravity) on a $(d+1)$-dimensional ``bulk" spacetime, enabling one to extract interesting information about the field theory spectrum and dynamics by performing relatively simple semi-classical calculations using standard general relativity techniques. Although much of the original progress in the field was driven by applications to formal supersymmetric gauge theory or by the desire to construct gravitational systems whose field theory duals resemble different phases of Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD), in recent years the scope of the AdS/CFT correspondence has grown to encompass interesting systems in condensed matter and atomic physics, including phenomena such as superconductivity and superfluidity, non-relativistic scale invariance, quantum criticality and others. In this thesis we present several applications of gauge/gravity duality techniques to the study of such systems, some of them from a phenomenological perspective, where an textit{ad hoc} gravitational theory is devised to model particular phenomena, and some from a string-theoretical perspective, where the gravitational system is embedded in the framework of string or M-theory. In particular, we describe studies of quantum criticality in $(2+1)$-dimensional field theories at finite charge density via extremal four-dimensional black holes, the modeling of systems with non-relativistic scale-invariance and broken time-translation invariance (``Aging" phenomena), and the coupling of fermions to holographic superconductors in $(2+1)$ and $(3+1)$ dimensions from explicit embeddings in type IIB string theory and M-theory.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gauge/gravity duality creates new links between quantum theory and gravity. It has led to new concepts in mathematics and physics, and provides new tools to solve problems in many areas of theoretical physics. This book is the first textbook on this important topic, enabling graduate students and researchers in string theory and particle, nuclear and condensed matter physics to get acquainted with the subject. Focusing on the fundamental aspects as well as on the applications, this textbook guides readers through a thorough explanation of the central concepts of gauge/gravity duality. For the AdS/CFT correspondence, it explains in detail how string theory provides the conjectured map. Generalisations to less symmetric cases of gauge/gravity duality and their applications are then presented, in particular to finite temperature and density, hydrodynamics, QCD-like theories, the quark-gluon plasma and condensed matter systems. The textbook features a large number of exercises, with solutions available online at www.cambridge.org/9781107010345.

Book excerpt: During the last three decades supersymmetry has grown into one of the busiest theoretical avenues of particle physics. Supersymmetric ideas dominate the scenario of “beyond the standard model phenomenology”, in spite of the thirty-year-old experimental opacity, a situation that could change within the following decade. One additional important reason for the good health of supersymmetry must be found in the most speculative areas of particle physics. Much of its success comes from superstring theory. The Advanced School on Supersymmetry in the Theories of Fields, Strings and Branes attempted to provide an up-to-date perspective of the role played by supersymmetry in these subjects. The lectures dealt with most of the main theoretical developments of the nineties, from the exact solutions of the Seiberg-Witten type to the physics of D-branes and their impact on the physics of black holes and string phenomenology. Many of these results are contrasted with the recent results on the holographic duality between string theories in anti-de Sitter spaces and certain large N conformal gauge theories, the so-called “Maldacena conjecture”, or “AdS/CFT correspondence”. The lecture notes contained in this volume are the result of the effort made by the lecturers to introduce the reader to these topics, assuming a basic knowledge of supersymmetry, quantum field theory and string theory.

I construct an alternative to a-maximization, called tauRR-minimization, which also determines the anomalous dimensions of chiral operators. This technique is not as powerful as a-maximization because tauRR receives quantum corrections. This method is extendable beyond four dimensions. I find the geometrical analog of a-maximization, Z-minimization, gives the same results as tauRR-minimization, and show how the two techniques are related. This allows for the computation of exact anomalous dimensions, in theories with known AdS/CFT duals, outside of four dimensions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding the dynamics of gauge theories is crucial, given the fact that all known interactions are based on the principle of local gauge symmetry. Beyond the perturbative regime, however, this is a notoriously difficult problem. Requiring invariance under supersymmetry turns out to be a suitable tool for analyzing supersymmetric gauge theories over a larger region of the space of parameters. Supersymmetric quantum field theories in four dimensions with extended N=2 supersymmetry are further constrained and have therefore been a fertile field of research in theoretical physics for quite some time. Moreover, there are far-reaching mathematical ramifications that have led to a successful dialogue with differential and algebraic geometry. These lecture notes aim to introduce students of modern theoretical physics to the fascinating developments in the understanding of N=2 supersymmetric gauge theories in a coherent fashion. Starting with a gentle introduction to electric-magnetic duality, the author guides readers through the key milestones in the field, which include the work of Seiberg and Witten, Nekrasov, Gaiotto and many others. As an advanced graduate level text, it assumes that readers have a working knowledge of supersymmetry including the formalism of superfields, as well as of quantum field theory techniques such as regularization, renormalization and anomalies. After his graduation from the University of Tokyo, Yuji Tachikawa worked at the Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton and the Kavli Institute for Physics and Mathematics of the Universe. Presently at the Department of Physics, University of Tokyo, Tachikawa is the author of several important papers in supersymmetric quantum field theories and string theory.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis explores aspects of gravity and quantum field theory (QFT). The first part is devoted to the interplay between manifest T-duality symmetry and higher-derivative corrections to the low-energy effective action of string theory. The second part focuses on exact results in supersymmetric gauge theories. We first discuss T-duality symmetry of string theory from various perspectives. We next review the manifest-duality-symmetric formulation of low-energy effective actions: double field theory (DFT) and its higher-derivative generalization, HSZ (Hohm-Siegel-Zwiebach) theory. We then compute on-shell three-point amplitudes in the HSZ theory. We show that these amplitudes factorize, as in bosonic and heterotic string theories, but they differ from both. Further, we analyze degrees of freedom in the HSZ theory. The spectrum of the theory contains massive spin-2 ghosts and massive scalars, in addition to massless fields. The massive modes can be integrated out exactly at the quadratic level, leading to an infinite series of higher-derivative corrections. Finally, we give a ghost-free massive extension of linearized DFT, which employs novel mass terms for the dilaton and the graviton. In the second part, we start by reviewing the exact results for partition functions of supersymmetric gauge theories on spheres. Exact results, however, are not available for minimally supersymmetric theories on S4 and S6. Minahan conjectured the form of perturbative partition functions for theories on Sd with eight and sixteen supersymmetries. We show that this form gives the correct one-loop divergences of the flat-space super Yang-Mills (SYM) upon taking the radius of the sphere to infinity. We also prove the conjecture explicitly for theories with eight supersymmetries. Further, we extend our results to theories with four supersymmetries for d

Book excerpt: The book begins with a brief review of supersymmetry, and the construction of the minimal supersymmetric standard model and approaches to supersymmetry breaking. General non-perturbative methods are also reviewed leading to the development of holomorphy and the Affleck-Dine-Seiberg superpotential as powerful tools for analysing supersymmetric theories. Seiberg duality is discussed in detail, with many example applications provided, with special attention paid to its use in understanding dynamical supersysmmetry breaking. The Seiberg-Witten theory of monopoles is introduced through the analysis of simpler N=1 analogues. Superconformal field theories are described along with the most recent development known as "amaximization". Supergravity theories are examined in 4, 10, and 11 dimensions, allowing for a discussion of anomaly and gaugino mediation, and setting the stage for the anti- de Sitter/conformal field theory correspondence. This book is unique in containing an overview of the important developments in supersymmetry since the publication of "Suppersymmetry and Supergravity" by Wess and Bagger. It also strives to cover topics that are of interest to both formal and phenomenological theorists.

Book excerpt: The articles in this book are written versions of talks presented at a conference organized by the TMR network in Corfu. The main theme of the conference was the interconnection between string theory and gauge theory. These very recent developments draw from many aspects of string theory, supergravity and supersymmetric gauge field theory. For students starting their research there is a great deal of background material that they have to absorb in order to be able to follow current developments. With this in mind the editors have included pedagogical lectures on background material and recent developments. Extensive lecture notes by Bernard de Witt, Renate Kallosh, Robbert Dijkgraaf, Michael Green, Eliezer Rabinovici and John Schwarz make these proceedings a valuable reference for a long time to come. The book addresses researchers as well as students.

While the core of the text is concerned with the classical theory, the quantization and anomaly problem are briefly discussed following a comprehensive introduction to BRS differential algebras and their field theoretical applications. Among the treated topics are invariant forms and vector fields on superspace, the matrix-representation of the super-Poincaré group, invariant connections on reductive homogeneous spaces and the supermetric approach. Various aspects of the subject are discussed for the first time in textbook and are consistently presented in a unified geometric formalism. Requiring essentially no background on supersymmetry and only a basic knowledge of differential geometry, this text will serve as a mathematically lucid introduction to supersymmetric gauge theories.
