Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this thesis, I focus on a few different applications of modern quantum field theory. I start with a model beyond the standard model: Little Flavor Theory and its related collider phenomenology. This model combines a flavor theory with Little Higgs theory, to explain the origin of flavor and little hierarchy problem at the same scale. The field theory on intersecting D-brane has a monopole. The theta vacuum interface could support an electron-monopole dyon system. A certain configuration of D-branes is dual to Wilson lines on the field theory side. These are the other special topics in this thesis. I also include a chapter on a finite temperature field theory method to calculate the corrections to the equation of state.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the invited lectures and seminars presented at the Banff Summer Institute on Particles and Fields held at the Banff Center in Banff, Canada, from 25 August to 3 September, 1977. The town is situated in the heart of the Canadian Rockies, and the observant reader may notice references in this volume to the bears which roam near the town. The subject matter of the school was recent advances in particle physics and field theory. Lectures were given on such topics as extended objects, lattice gauge theories, quantum chromodynamics and Reggeon field theory. Experimental reviews were given of recent work in charmed particle and neutrino physics. Summaries of the theoretical implications of these experiments were also given. The format of the talks included eight lecture series (of three to four hours each) given by Profs. Abarbanel, Appelquist, Feldman, Gilman, 't Hooft, Jackiw, Mann and Weinstein, seven one-hour seminars given by Profs. Caianiello, Fujii, Johnson, Lam, Phillips, Sherry and Tze, and several short contributed seminars (which do not appear in this volume). There were also small informal seminar groups held at the Center and, we hope, many physics conversations on the hiking trails where most of the participants spent their afternoons. Not included in these proceedings are the banquet speeches by E. Caianiello and S. D. Drell, as well as (for copyright reasons) a seminar by K. Johnson.
Book Synopsis Particles, Fields, Quanta by : Gerhard Ecker
Download or read book Particles, Fields, Quanta written by Gerhard Ecker and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-04-05 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an introduction to the current state of our knowledge about the structure of matter. Gerhard Ecker describes the development of modern physics from the beginning of the quantum age to the standard model of particle physics, the fundamental theory of interactions of the microcosm. The focus lies on the most important discoveries and developments, e.g. of quantum field theory, gauge theories and the future of particle physics. The author also emphasizes the interplay between theory and experiment, which helps us to explore the deepest mysteries of nature. "Particles, Fields, Quanta" is written for everyone who enjoys physics. It offers high school graduates and students of physics in the first semesters an encouragement to understand physics more deeply. Teachers and others interested in physics will find useful insights into the world of particle physics. For advanced students, the book can serve as a comprehensive preparation for lectures on particle physics and quantum field theory. A brief outline of the mathematical structures, an index of persons with research focuses and a glossary for quick reference of important terms such as gauge theory, spin and symmetry complete the book. From the foreword by Michael Springer: “The great successes and the many open questions this book describes illustrate how immensely complicated nature is and nevertheless how much we already understand of it.” The author Gerhard Ecker studied theoretical physics with Walter Thirring at the University of Vienna. His research focus has been on theoretical particle physics, in particular during several long-term visits at CERN, the European Organisation for Nuclear Research in Geneva. In 1986 he was promoted to Professor of Theoretical Physics at the University of Vienna. Since 1977 he has given both basic lectures in theoretical physics and advanced courses on different topics in particle physics, e.g., quantum field theory, symmetry groups in particle physics and renormalisation in quantum field theory.

Book Synopsis Introduction to the Standard Model and Beyond by : Stuart Raby
Download or read book Introduction to the Standard Model and Beyond written by Stuart Raby and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2021-07-08 with total page 650 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Standard Model of particle physics is an amazingly successful theory describing the fundamental particles and forces of nature. This text, written for a two-semester graduate course on the Standard Model, develops a practical understanding of the theoretical concepts it's built upon, to prepare students to enter research. The author takes a historical approach to demonstrate to students the process of discovery which is often overlooked in other textbooks, presenting quantum field theory and symmetries as the necessary tools for describing and understanding the Standard Model. He develops these tools using a basic understanding of quantum mechanics and classical field theory, such as Maxwell's electrodynamics, before discussing the important role that Noether's theorem and conserved charges play in the theory. Worked examples feature throughout the text, while homework exercises are included for the first five parts, with solutions available online for instructors. Inspired by the author's own teaching experience, suggestions for independent research topics have been provided for the second-half of the course, which students can then present to the rest of the class.

This book was released on 2015-06-11 with total page 581 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Uniting the usually distinct areas of particle physics and quantum field theory, gravity and general relativity, this expansive and comprehensive textbook of fundamental and theoretical physics describes the quest to consolidate the basic building blocks of nature, by journeying through contemporary discoveries in the field, and analysing elementary particles and their interactions. Designed for advanced undergraduates and graduate students and abounding in worked examples and detailed derivations, as well as including historical anecdotes and philosophical and methodological perspectives, this textbook provides students with a unified understanding of all matter at the fundamental level. Topics range from gauge principles, particle decay and scattering cross-sections, the Higgs mechanism and mass generation, to spacetime geometries and supersymmetry. By combining historically separate areas of study and presenting them in a logically consistent manner, students will appreciate the underlying similarities and conceptual connections to be made in these fields.

Book Synopsis Quantum Field Theory by : V. P. Nair
Download or read book Quantum Field Theory written by V. P. Nair and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-03-30 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quantum field theory, which started with Paul Dirac’s work shortly after the discovery of quantum mechanics, has produced an impressive and important array of results. Quantum electrodynamics, with its extremely accurate and well-tested predictions, and the standard model of electroweak and chromodynamic (nuclear) forces are examples of successful theories. Field theory has also been applied to a variety of phenomena in condensed matter physics, including superconductivity, superfluidity and the quantum Hall effect. The concept of the renormalization group has given us a new perspective on field theory in general and on critical phenomena in particular. At this stage, a strong case can be made that quantum field theory is the mathematical and intellectual framework for describing and understanding all physical phenomena, except possibly for a quantum theory of gravity. Quantum Field Theory: A Modern Perspective presents Professor Nair’s view of certain topics in field theory loosely knit together as it grew out of courses on field theory and particle physics taught at Columbia University and the City College of CUNY. The first few chapters, up to Chapter 12, contain material that generally goes into any course on quantum field theory, although there are a few nuances of presentation which readers may find to be different from other books. This first part of the book can be used for a general course on field theory, omitting, perhaps, the last three sections in Chapter 3, the last two in Chapter 8 and sections 6 and 7 in Chapter 10. The remaining chapters cover some of the more modern developments over the last three decades, involving topological and geometrical features. The introduction given to the mathematical basis of this part of the discussion is necessarily brief and should be accompanied by books on the relevant mathematical topics as indicated in the bibliography. Professor Nair also concentrates on developments pertinent to a better understanding of the standard model. There is no discussion of supersymmetry, supergravity, developments in field theory inspired by string theory, etc. There is also no detailed discussion of the renormalization group. Each of these topics would require a book in its own right to do justice to the topic. Quantum Field Theory: A Modern Perspective serves as a portal to so many more topics of detailed and ongoing research, referring readers to more detailed treatments for many specific topics. The book also contains extensive references, providing readers a more comprehensive perspective on the literature and the historical development of the subject. V. Parameswaran Nair is Professor of Physics at City College of The City University of New York (CUNY). Professor Nair has held Visiting Professorships at The Abdus Salam International Center for Theoretical Physics, Rockefeller University, Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton, and Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Book Synopsis Radiative Corrections, Radcor 98: Application Of Quantum Field Theory To Phenomenology - Proceedings Of 4th by : Joan Sola
Download or read book Radiative Corrections, Radcor 98: Application Of Quantum Field Theory To Phenomenology - Proceedings Of 4th written by Joan Sola and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1999-09-17 with total page 606 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the contributions of 47 leading researchers in high energy physics, both theorists and experimentalists, from all over the world. It discusses the application of quantum field theory to phenomenology in all areas of active research in particle physics. The topics covered include: (i) the status of precision measurements at LEP, SLC, HERA, Tevatron, and other experiments; (ii) quantum-field-theoretical techniques for calculating electroweak and QCD radiative corrections; and (iii) radiative corrections and precision experiments in future colliders (Tevatron II, LHC, NLC, Muon Collider, etc.). The confrontation in a single volume of all the high precision results reported by experimentalists, on one side, with the predictions of the Standard Model (SM) at the level of radiative corrections, on the otherside, provides a detailed test of the SM at the quantum level. And, where discrepancies appear, it gives hints of physics beyond the SM (such as supersymmetry, effective quantum field theories, etc.) which are thoroughly discussed in the book.
